FMU containing all source code including dependencies?

I understand that PythonFMU is just a tool coupling solution, but I would like to know what are the technical barriers to implementing a 'source code FMU' compiler from Python? That would enable deployment of the FMU onto target hardware.

• FMI2 says nothing about how to build the FMU from source, so the target application would not succeed even with the sources embedded
  • A source code FMU might work with FMI3

Also, PythonFMUs can be deployed on target hardware. Just compile the repo once and drop the binary into the FMU. This fact makes Source code FMUs less attractive in this case (why adapt a new workflow, when one exists already?).

How complicated would it be to compile the entire repo to a binary? My target hardware is PLC or embedded chip. Are you aware of any examples of this being officially supported?

Are we talking about actually making the FMU self-contained? Then no, you cannot do that (with PythonFMU). If going down that route, if possible, I'd would have rather look at ways to build a custom C/C++ FMU.

All the information that I've seen comes down to the same thing: PLC/embedded hardware only allows source code FMUs in C/C++. I wondered about using Cython to convert my python library to C but I think it's a dead end.
