Commercial licensing

ALTWEB is dual-licensed.

Open source — AGPL-3.0-or-later

The public license is the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later (see LICENSE). You may use, study, modify, and redistribute ALTWEB under its terms — for free — as long as you honor them. The key obligation:

If you modify ALTWEB and let others interact with it — by distributing it, or by running it as a network service (for example, hosting the altweb-context MCP server for others to reach) — you must release the complete corresponding source of your modified version under the AGPL.

For most open-source and internal use, this is all you need, and you owe nothing to anyone.

Commercial — by agreement

If you want to use ALTWEB in a way the AGPL does not permit — for example:

  • embedding it in a closed-source product or service,
  • offering a modified ALTWEB as a hosted/network service without publishing your changes, or
  • any use where the AGPL's copyleft obligations are incompatible with your business,

you need a separate commercial license. This is a private agreement that lifts the AGPL obligations in exchange for terms we agree on.

To obtain one, contact the copyright holder:

Tell us what you are building and how you intend to use ALTWEB, and we will work out a license that fits.

The copyright holder retains full ownership and may license the same code under both the AGPL and commercial terms. Choosing the commercial license does not remove anyone else's rights under the AGPL.
