Feature Request: Syntax - Allow escape of any special character

Syntax request: Allow special characters to be escaped that don't actually need it?

Some users do not search for special characters very often, and don't remember which require the escape character and which don't. Yes they can look it up when their regex fails. It would be a nice usability enhancement if the engine would syntactically ignore an escape character with a symbol that doesn't need it.
