meta_title: "Fathom review (2026): the free recap, the bot, and 3.0"
display_title: "Fathom review: still the free recap, with a catch on 3.0"
meta_description: "Fathom is the free AI notetaker teams actually keep. Unlimited recordings on the free plan, a bot that still shows up, and a Mac-only English 3.0. Honest review."
author: "John Jeong"
category: "Comparisons"
date: "2026-08-30"
---

Fathom is the AI notetaker people recommend when they are tired of Otter's minute counter. The recordings are unlimited. The catch is that the useful AI has its own meter.

**Disclosure:** I co-founded Anarlog, an open-source Fathom alternative. This review is based on Fathom's product, pricing, help center, and public usage data. Our bias is toward local ownership and a choice of AI providers.

The pitch is simple. Record Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams. Get a recap. Clip the moments. Do it on a free plan that does not cap recordings. Semrush put [fathom.video at about 656,000 visits](https://www.semrush.com/website/fathom.video/overview/) in July 2026. That is smaller than Otter or Fireflies and large enough that the product is not a secret.

We already keep a running list of [Fathom alternatives](/blog/fathom-ai-alternatives) and a separate writeup of [why people complain about Fathom](/blog/fathom-ai-complaints). This is the first-party review: what the product is good at, where the free plan actually stops, and why Fathom 3.0 is not a drop-in replacement for the bot.

## What Fathom is

Fathom is a meeting recorder with an opinionated recap. It joins as a bot (or, on the 3.0 beta, records from the Mac). After the call you get a structured summary, action items on paid plans, and a player you can clip.

It is not a live notepad in the Granola sense. You do not sit in a prose editor while the transcript lands beside your caret. You run the meeting. Fathom writes the recap. You share it.

That split is why Fathom wins "best free AI notetaker" roundups and loses "I want a notepad" comparisons. Different job.

## What it does well

### The recap is the product

Fathom's shareable recap is the reason the brand exists. Clean enough to paste into Slack. Fast enough that people actually send it. The [in-app recap](/images/blog/library/products/fathom/meeting-recap/2026-08-30-recap.webp) is the artifact, not a transcript dump.

*Fathom's recap keeps the recording, summary, and action items in one meeting workspace. Source: [Fathom](https://www.fathom.video/).*

On the free plan you get instant summaries. **Advanced summaries** (the template pack: BANT, Sandler, and the rest) are [limited use](https://www.fathom.video/pricing) on Free. Our [alternatives writeup](/blog/fathom-ai-alternatives) has treated that cap as five a month. Confirm in-app; this is the meter that turns happy free users into Premium users.

### Unlimited recordings on free

This is the Otter contrast. Otter's free plan is a minute budget. Fathom's free plan is unlimited recordings and transcription. You can live here for a long time if instant summaries and the player are enough.

You cannot live here if you need Ask Fathom, CRM field sync, coaching, or more than a handful of advanced summaries.

### Clips and the player

Jump-to-moment and clip sharing are solid. For teams that circulate "the 90 seconds where we decided X," Fathom is closer to tl;dv than to Granola. Granola barely wants to be a player. Fathom is one.

### Price, if you do pay

[Fathom's pricing page](https://www.fathom.video/pricing) (August 2026):

| Plan | Monthly | Annual equivalent | What changes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Free** | $0 | $0 | Unlimited recordings and transcription. Instant summaries. Bot-free beta (Mac). Advanced summaries limited. |
| **Premium** | $20/mo | $16/mo billed annual | Advanced summaries, action items, Ask Fathom. |
| **Team** | $19/user/mo | $15/user/mo annual | Shared workspace. Two-user minimum. |
| **Business** | $34/user/mo | $25/user/mo annual | CRM field sync, coaching. |
| **Enterprise** | Talk to sales | Talk to sales | HIPAA with a signed BAA is listed here. |

Annual exists. Granola's Business plan does not do that. If you are comparing those two, the billing shape is part of the comparison.

## Where it falls short

### The bot is still the default

Fathom 3.0 is the bot-free story. It is a **Mac beta**, and [Fathom's own article](https://help.fathom.video/en/articles/11577345-how-does-bot-free-recording-work-in-fathom-3-0) says **English only**. Windows, Linux, and everyone who needs Spanish or Japanese are on the bot.

*Fathom 3.0 offers transcript-only and audio-only bot-free modes, while full audio and video still uses a bot. Source: [Fathom Help Center](https://help.fathom.video/en/articles/11577345-how-does-bot-free-recording-work-in-fathom-3-0).*

The bot is competent. It is also the thing privacy-sensitive customers reject, and the thing that fails to join when waiting rooms and auth get in the way. If "no bot" is why you opened Fathom, read the 3.0 constraints before you switch the team off Otter.

### Advanced summaries are the real free-plan wall

Unlimited recordings hide the meter. The meter is advanced summaries. Five a month is a trial of the good output, not a plan for a team that lives in recaps.

Premium at $20/month is in Otter Pro territory. Fair if you use Ask Fathom and action items. Not a spiritual successor to "Fathom is free."

### Still a recap tool, even with the 3.0 scratch pad

Fathom 3.0 adds a scratch pad and a live summary. That is closer to a notepad than the old player-only UI. It is still not Granola-style enhance of *your* notes. If the job is "I write, the model cleans," Fathom is the wrong category. Use [Granola](/blog/granola-ai-complaints) or Anarlog for that job and Fathom for the recap job, or pick one job.

*The live summary and scratch pad make Fathom 3.0 more useful during the meeting, but the final artifact remains Fathom's recap. Source: [Fathom Help Center](https://help.fathom.video/en/articles/11577345-how-does-bot-free-recording-work-in-fathom-3-0).*

### Language is two products

Bot path: [38 transcript languages](https://help.fathom.video/en/articles/296192-what-languages-does-fathom-support). 3.0 path: English. We wrote the language map separately: [best multilingual AI notetaker](/blog/best-multilingual-ai-notetaker).

### HIPAA is Enterprise

The pricing page lists HIPAA with a signed BAA on Enterprise. Do not put PHI on Free or Premium because the recap is convenient. [HIPAA-compliant AI notetakers](/blog/hipaa-compliant-ai-notetaker) is the longer version.

## Who Fathom is for

**Yes, if:**

- You want a free recap tool for Zoom / Meet / Teams and you can live with a bot.
- Clips matter more than a live notepad.
- English (or the bot language list) covers the team.
- You might pay Premium for Ask Fathom, not because you hit a recording cap.

**No, if:**

- You need bot-free on Windows, or bot-free in anything but English on a Mac.
- You need a typed notepad next to the transcript.
- You need self-serve HIPAA.
- You need the language story in [the multilingual post](/blog/best-multilingual-ai-notetaker).

## Fathom vs the rest of this series

| | Fathom | Granola | Otter | Fireflies | tl;dv |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Capture | Bot; 3.0 Mac/EN | On-device | Bot + app | Bot | Bot |
| Free plan hook | Unlimited recordings | Unlimited capture, 30-day history | Minutes | Credits / limits | Notes / retention |
| Best artifact | Recap + clips | Enhanced notepad | Transcript + Otter Chat | CRM / Fireflies | Clips + multi-meeting |
| Language | 38 bot / 1 on 3.0 | 10 desktop / 17 iOS | 6, one at a time | 69–100+, English-first | 30+ |

Otter and Fireflies complaints get the same Google/Reddit/Semrush treatment we gave Granola: [Otter](/blog/otter-ai-complaints), [Fireflies](/blog/fireflies-ai-complaints). Fathom's version is [here](/blog/fathom-ai-complaints).

## Anarlog, briefly

Anarlog is the open-source, notepad-shaped answer: local SQLite, models you pick, no bot required, no 5-recap meter. It will not replace Fathom's one-click clip-to-Slack motion on day one. Teams that want both usually keep Fathom for the shared recap and something local for notes they are not willing to park on a vendor.
