Please tell us about yourself (include an email address):
Omran Sadighy, Dutch entrepreneur based in Dordrecht, the Netherlands (ksadighy@hotmail.com). I am building a Dutch-language tool (later more languages) that helps Muslims find what the Prophet ﷺ did in situations comparable to their own, with exact citations to the canonical collections. The project issues no rulings; it presents sources and refers users to scholars.
-
Your purpose in using this API:
Three things, in order of importance:
The Arabic text of the canonical collections with your canonical numbering (URNs) and chapter structure, so that our citations point to a stable reference that readers recognise and can look up on sunnah.com.
The grading metadata (grader and grade per hadith), to decide what may be shown as evidence, we do not show ḍaʿīf or mawḍūʿ narrations as evidence.
Displaying individual hadith with attribution and a link back to sunnah.com.
Because your About page rules out scraping and mass reproduction, I want to ask explicitly rather than assume:
(a) May we maintain a local search index over the Arabic text and metadata obtained through the API? It would be used only to find and cite individual hadith inside the application, never republished as a collection or offered for download.
(b) We produce our own translations from the Arabic and do not intend to publish your English translations. Would you permit using the English as an internal reference during translation and review only? If not, we will not use it at all.
(c) Is use in a product that may become commercial permitted with attribution, and on what terms?
Happy to sign any agreement you consider appropriate and to share the product with you when it is ready.
About 20,000 per day during initial indexing (a few days); under 2,000 per day afterwards.
-
Is your use case better served by having an offline dump of hadith data or programmatic API access?
An offline snapshot of the Arabic text plus grading metadata would serve us best (one-time, with a periodic refresh). API access is fine if a dump is not available.
-
What are the languages in which would you like hadith data?
Arabic (primary). English only as an internal reference, and only if you permit it (see question b).
-
What programming language will your API client be in?
TypeScript
