Closes #1458

A slop audit over every comment in frontend/src, backend/, frontend/src-tauri/src, and sync-microservice. 171 files, +336 / -1565 against dev (2e08969).

Following @rohan-pandeyy's steer on the issue (keep comments focused, strip the jargon, preserve the ones that explain why an implementation was chosen), plus the house preference for one line, sometimes two, rarely three.

Scope after the move to dev

CI on dev type-checks every Python file a PR touches, in full. 27 files this PR originally cleaned carried 286 type errors that predate it (the counts on dev were identical, so none come from here). Rather than turn a comments PR into a typing pass, those 27 are back to their dev state, and their cleanup moves to the #1499 passes, which face the same constraint. The list is at the bottom.

The every-comment pass below reached two more files that fail the check on errors already on dev: database/face_clusters.py and models/YOLO.py, 8 errors, all None narrowing. Those need code changes rather than annotations, so they are deferred the same way, making 29. models/FaceDetector.py and models/ObjectClassifier.py were deferred at first too, but each fails only when models/YOLO.py is checked in the same run, so d1dd5d6 cleans them here.

Re-checked on 2e08969 the way CI runs it, alongside this PR's own files: 27 of the 29 carry 294 errors. database/images.py and routes/models.py now pass after typing fixes on dev, but stay deferred so the scope does not move under review.

routes/folders.py and tests/test_folders.py stay, because they hold the permission fix and its test. On dev the check fails test_folders.py with four errors, empty request dicts that need a type, fixed here with annotations only. post_folder_add_sequence also typed folder_id as int, though folder IDs are TEXT UUIDs; it is now str, matching post_sync_folder_sequence.

Two single-line edits were dropped so this PR cannot conflict with the other open ones: the conftest.py comment #1498 deletes along with the line under it, and the executor comment #1349 replaces with its single-worker note. connection.py (#1353 removes one of its pragmas) and axiosConfig.ts (#1349 changes its timeouts) are left alone for the same reason. Every merge order of the five open PRs applies cleanly.

Kept current with dev

The audit ran on d1ccba1. This update merges dev at 2e08969 and holds the two features merged since the last update to the same budget:

  • PNG metadata export (fea2122): three blocks over budget are now three lines or fewer with their reasoning kept: the trigger rules in xmp_export_state.py, the upsert note in yolo_mapping.py, and the unparseable-namespace note in test_xmp_stripping.py (7 lines down to a section header plus 3). The JSDoc on toggleMetadataExport restated its name and was the only one left among its sibling toggles, so it goes, and the MetadataExportCard doc moves from a JSDoc frame to //.
  • Deleting from the image viewer (9cb3e72): useDeleteUserPreference.ts had blocks of 8, 5, 4, 4 and 3 lines. Each is now one or two, still saying why the skip is anchored to the "Delete From Computer" value and why a new default revokes it. MediaView.tsx and ConfirmDialog.tsx lose a JSDoc frame and a restatement. Its three long backend blocks sit in database/images.py and utils/images.py, both deferred, so they go to DOC: Remove dead app/schemas/test.py and compress signature-restating docstrings (follow-up to #1458) #1499 with the rest of those files.

2e08969 itself changed only docs/Manual_Setup_Guide.md.

Every comment, not just the long ones

A second pass reviewed all 1,369 full-line comment blocks and 175 trailing comments in scope, at 2e08969, regardless of length. A comment stays if it says something the code does not: a reason, a constraint, a unit, an invariant. 306 blocks and 39 trailing comments were deleted, and 42 blocks and 2 trailing comments rewritten.

  • Deleted: JSX section labels that name the element under them ({/* Title */}, {/* Album Name */}, {/* Sticky Month/Year Header */}), test narration that repeats its assertion (// verify dropdown closed, // Click to open), headers in schema, selector and API files (# Request Models, // Basic selectors, // API Functions), and labels such as # Type definitions and # Standard library imports. Four schema headers read # Request Handler or # Response Handler above models, which was wrong as well as redundant.
  • Corrected: settings.py said the share listener differs from "the two services above" where one is defined, ONNX.py said "Default to CPU" above gpu_acceleration = True, utils/YOLO.py said "Pick the last box" above the highest-scoring one, and a yolo_mapping test still said INSERT OR REPLACE after the move to an upsert.
  • Compressed: numbered step comments are gone or now say why the order matters, tauriUtils.ts's "Method 1/2/3" narration is one line per check, and the three 4-line blocks left as written last time are 3 lines or fewer.
  • TODO markers: twelve trailing # TODOs in model_registry.py, which AGENTS.md rules out. The PLACEHOLDER_URL values already mark those entries as unfinished.
  • Recheck: a last pass over all 599 hunks where this PR removes or rewrites a comment put back thirteen reasons the shorter versions had dropped, and corrected two (28df970). ONNXSessionBase.py stated its lock rationale backwards, tunnel.rs had lost why ssh is not bundled (a ~40MB binary served from unversioned URLs), and a useMemories comment named one status where any non-running one applies.
  • Code: db_create_YOLO_classes_table printed os.getcwd() on every startup under a # print current directory: comment (0b497b6), and ApplicationControlsCard had an empty finally {} whose only content explained why it was empty.

Result

Measured on dev and on this branch with the same script. A block is a run of consecutive # or // lines, or one /* */ comment, counted by content lines.

Check dev This branch Of which in the 29 deferred files
Comment blocks over 3 content lines 99 16 16
Longest block 22 lines 7 lines longest outside them: 3
ASCII banner rule lines 288 200 200

Block length distribution went from 22x1, 18x1, 15x1, 12x2, 11x1, 10x1, 9x2, 8x1, 7x7, 6x6, 5x20, 4x56, 3x268 to 7x1, 5x2, 4x13, 3x229. Every block over 3 lines that remains is in a deferred file.

Removed: comments that restate the code below them

  • api-functions/albums.ts: 10 JSDoc blocks (/** Get all albums */, @param albumId - Album UUID). 7 of the 11 sibling API files already carry no JSDoc, so this file was the outlier rather than the convention.
  • useMutationFeedback.tsx: 14 blocks, including a /** Card title */-shaped doc on every option field, and // Handle loading state sitting on the effect that handles loading.
  • SettingsCard.tsx, useFolderOperations.tsx, useUserPreferences.tsx, the Settings page components, store/hooks.ts, tauriUtils.ts: same pattern.
  • 4 route-path comments in routes/share.py, sitting directly above the decorator that already says it. Ten more are in deferred files, including one in routes/albums.py that had drifted out of sync with its route.
  • Single-line labels repo-wide: # Initialize logger, // Set all folders, # Mock the executor state.
  • 17 Step N: narration comments in routes/folders.py and routes/face_clusters.py.
  • 88 banner rule lines (# ####..., # ====..., /* ----- */) across 14 files: 10 backend/tests modules, 2 in backend/app, and two frontend test files.

Restructured rather than removed

Blocks carrying real reasoning were compressed to one or two lines with the argument intact. services/tunnel.rs went from 10 lines to 3, useUserPreferences from 9 to 3, the SigLIP calibration note in config/settings.py from 7 to 3. Reasoning comments now use // or # instead of a JSDoc frame, which costs two lines before a word is written.

Kept deliberately: labels that carry something the code does not say, such as the FK-ordering note in conftest.py and the "red,bg_white" format example in the log formatter.

Dead code

  • backend/app/routes/test.py: 173 lines, entirely commented out, imported nowhere. Deleted; git remembers it.
  • A debug # print(...) in utils/YOLO.py, and two leftover console.log calls, one of which was printing a resolved video path on every render in the shipped player.
  • routes/folders.py carried an # Uncomment the following lines if you want to check for write and execute permissions block. See the permission fix below.

One deletion turned into a restoration

tests/test_folders.py carried a commented-out test_add_folder_permission_denied. Rather than delete it, I restored it. It passes, and it covers the exact os.access branch discussed below. Backend suite goes from 1595 to 1596 on dev.

One functional change, flagged deliberately

This PR is otherwise cosmetic, but f6f35ef changes one line of behaviour, and reviewers should look at it as a bug fix rather than cleanup.

Removing the commented-out permission block above, I replaced it with a comment reading "Read access is all indexing asks for". @coderabbitai correctly flagged that as false: folder_util_add_folder_tree calls os.walk, and on POSIX descending into a directory needs the search bit, not the read bit. Verified:

mode r--: os.access(R_OK) = True
mode r--: os.walk yielded = [('dir', ['sub'], [])]
mode rwx: os.walk yielded = [('dir', ['sub'], []), ('sub', [], ['f.jpg'])]

A folder at r-- passes the old check, then os.walk returns the top level and descends nowhere, so the folder is accepted and everything beneath it silently never indexed. Now os.R_OK | os.X_OK, with the 401 message updated to match. Write access stays optional.

Worth noting the commented-out code removed here had os.X_OK in it. It was pointing at this the whole time.

If maintainers would rather keep this PR strictly docs-only, I am happy to revert the route to os.R_OK with a neutral comment and raise the permission fix separately.

Verification

On dev (2e08969) with this branch merged: ESLint, Prettier, tsc --noEmit, 423 frontend tests, black, ruff, 1596 backend tests, and the changed-file MyPy check (52 backend and 7 sync files) all pass. cargo fmt --check and cargo test (11 tests) pass on this branch.

Also merged all five of my open PRs onto dev (2e08969) together: 1605 backend and 429 frontend tests pass, exactly the sum of each PR's additions. All 20 ordered pairs of the five merge without conflict.

Notes for reviewers

  1. backend/app/schemas/test.py (51 lines) is now provably dead, since its only reference was the routes/test.py deleted here. It is tracked in DOC: Remove dead app/schemas/test.py and compress signature-restating docstrings (follow-up to #1458) #1499 with backend/test.py, another dead script, so this PR stays about comments.
  2. Signature-restating docstrings (469 multi-line on dev) are out of scope here and scoped in DOC: Remove dead app/schemas/test.py and compress signature-restating docstrings (follow-up to #1458) #1499. 105 docstrings in the files in scope run past 3 lines; they are part of that work, not this pass.
  3. test_folders.py has no type annotations on any of its test methods. Annotating only the one revived here would make it the odd one out, so I left it consistent with the module. The four annotated request_data locals are there for the MyPy check, not as a start on that.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Folder indexing now requires both read and traversal permissions and provides a clear error when access is insufficient.
    • Renaming a face cluster now queues a memory rescore.
    • Stale preference reads no longer overwrite newer changes.
    • Folder details and database summaries now include video counts, including for video-only folders.
  • Chores

    • Removed diagnostic test endpoints.

Comments that only restate the identifier below them carry no information and
push the code that does matter further apart. Removed across the frontend API
wrappers, hooks and settings components, and the route-path comments in the
backend that duplicated the decorator underneath (one had already drifted --
albums.py labelled a POST route as GET).

Comments that explain *why* an implementation was chosen are kept. A handful
of the longest were tightened rather than dropped, since the reasoning is the
part worth reading.

Dead code removed with it: app/routes/test.py was 173 lines entirely commented
out and imported nowhere, plus a debug print, a commented-out formula, and two
leftover console.log lines. The commented-out folder-permission test is
restored and passing instead of deleted.

Repository behavior and comment updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Folder access and route behavior
backend/app/routes/folders.py, backend/app/routes/face_clusters.py, backend/tests/test_folders.py
Folder addition checks read and traversal permissions and returns HTTP 401 when either check fails. Folder sequence IDs use string annotations. A successful cluster rename queues a memory rescore. The folder tests cover permission denial.
Backend comments and tests
backend/app/config/*, backend/app/database/*, backend/app/logging/*, backend/app/models/*, backend/app/routes/*, backend/app/utils/*, backend/tests/*
Backend comments and test headings are revised or removed. The test router is removed. An album test no longer asserts UUID formatting of the returned ID.
Frontend and service comments
frontend/src/*, frontend/src-tauri/src/*, sync-microservice/app/*
Comments across frontend APIs, hooks, views, types, and utilities are revised or removed. The video player no longer logs the resolved source, and a duplicate image declaration is removed. Rust tunnel and sync-service comments are revised or removed.

Explanation

The PR changes folder-add behavior in backend/app/routes/folders.py from os.R_OK to os.R_OK | os.X_OK, changes the 401 message, and adds a permission test. This is a functional traversal-permission bug fix, not a comment restructuring required by #1458. The PR explicitly identifies this change as separate from the documentation cleanup.

Assert the permission mask.

mock_access.return_value = False makes this test pass for any access flag. Capture the folder path and assert the exact mask used by the route. For the POSIX traversal fix, assert os.R_OK | os.X_OK.

As per path instructions, test code must be comprehensive and cover critical functionality.

Comment thread backend/app/routes/folders.py Resolved
The first pass filtered on whether a comment said anything, not on how long
it took to say it, so blocks carrying real reasoning were left at four to ten
lines. This compresses them to the one-or-two-line house style, keeping the
argument in every case -- what was cut is wordiness, not content. Reasoning
comments now use // or # rather than a JSDoc frame, which costs two lines
before a word is written.

Also caught in this pass, all missed by the first scan because it only looked
for runs of three or more comment lines:

- 117 ASCII banner blocks in backend/tests, the same decoration already
  removed from backend/app
- 145 single-line labels that restate the statement below them
(# Initialize logger, // Set all folders, # Sort by path)
- 27 "Step N:" narration comments across three route and util modules

Kept the labels that carry something the code does not: the FK-ordering note
in conftest, the "proper parent, not just a prefix" guard in the watcher,
the colour-spec example in the log formatter.
Four dash-rule banners in the frontend test files, which the earlier sweep
missed by only matching # and = rules, and the tunnel module header down
from four lines to three.
CodeRabbit caught that the comment this PR put on the folder permission
check was wrong. It read "Read access is all indexing asks for", but
folder_util_add_folder_tree calls os.walk, and on POSIX a directory needs
the search bit to be descended into, not just the read bit.

Verified: a directory at r-- passes os.access(R_OK) and yields only its top
level from os.walk, so the folder would be accepted and everything beneath
it silently skipped. Checking R_OK | X_OK rejects it up front instead.

The check itself is unchanged from before this PR -- the commented-out
os.X_OK line removed earlier was hinting at exactly this. The revived test
now asserts the mask, which return_value = False alone could never catch.

Thanks @coderabbitai. The major one was a real bug in this PR, and it was mine. Addressed in f6f35ef.

1. Traversal permission: accepted, and the comment was the actual defect.

You're right, and the problem was worse than the check. The comment this PR added asserted something false. I wrote "Read access is all indexing asks for" while replacing the old commented-out os.X_OK line, without checking whether that was true. It isn't: folder_util_add_folder_tree calls os.walk.

Verified rather than assumed:

mode r--: os.access(R_OK) = True
mode r--: os.access(X_OK) = False
mode r--: os.walk yielded = [('dir', ['sub'], [])]
mode rwx: os.walk yielded = [('dir', ['sub'], []), ('sub', [], ['f.jpg'])]

A readable-but-unsearchable directory passes the old check, then os.walk returns the top level and descends nowhere. The folder is accepted and everything under it silently never indexed. Now os.R_OK | os.X_OK, with the user-facing message updated to match. Write access stays optional, as you suggested.

Worth noting the check is unchanged relative to main: the # Uncomment the following lines... block I removed had os.X_OK sitting right there, commented out. It was pointing at this the whole time.

2. Assert the permission mask: accepted.

Good catch that mock_access.return_value = False passes for any flag, which would have made the test blind to exactly the bug above. Now asserts mock_access.assert_called_once_with(folder_path, os.R_OK | os.X_OK).

3. Annotate the test signature: declining, for consistency.

No test method in test_folders.py is annotated, not test_add_folder_success, not test_add_folder_with_parent_id, nor any of the other 60-odd. Annotating only this one would make it the odd one out.

AGENTS.md puts consistency first ("Match the codebase before anything else... Consistency with what is already here beats any general best practice"), and its annotation rule is written for backend/app, where it is followed. Annotating the test module is a reasonable change, but it's a separate one that should cover the whole file rather than arrive through a comment-cleanup PR.

Happy to do it as a follow-up if maintainers want it.

@VanshajPoonia Confirmed in f6f35ef.

add_folder now requires os.R_OK | os.X_OK. This matches folder_util_add_folder_tree, which uses os.walk. The revised error message also correctly states the read and traversal requirement.

The test now asserts the exact access mask. This prevents a future regression to os.R_OK alone.

I agree with declining the isolated test annotation. backend/tests/test_folders.py consistently leaves test method signatures unannotated. A full test-module annotation update can be a separate change if maintainers request it.

Learning: In `backend/app/routes/folders.py`, `add_folder` must require `os.R_OK | os.X_OK` before indexing a folder. `backend/app/utils/folders.py::folder_util_add_folder_tree` uses `os.walk`, so a readable but unsearchable directory can list names but cannot be traversed to index its contents.

Learning: For Python tests in `backend/tests/test_folders.py`, test methods currently omit parameter and return type annotations. Do not request an annotation on an individual test method unless the module is updated consistently; the `AGENTS.md` annotation guidance applies to `backend/app`.

Tip

@VanshajPoonia Confirmed. The os.R_OK | os.X_OK requirement prevents folders from being accepted when os.walk cannot traverse their contents. The exact-mask assertion protects that requirement.

I agree that adding one annotation in backend/tests/test_folders.py would be inconsistent. A module-wide annotation update is the correct scope if maintainers request it.

# Conflicts:
#	backend/app/utils/images.py
VanshajPoonia and others added 2 commits August 11, 2026 05:39
Reviewing my own rewrites, this one repeated the mistake CodeRabbit caught in
the folder permission check: a justification I inferred instead of read.

It claimed a Tauri file path is not something an <img> can load. It is, via
convertFileSrc, which utils/memories.ts and NetflixStylePlayer both rely on.
The real reason is downstream: pickImageFile feeds avatarCropDialog, which
calls getCroppedImg, which reads the canvas back with toDataURL. An asset://
source would taint the canvas and make that throw. A data URL is same-origin,
so it cannot.
An independent review of every comment this branch adds or rewords found ten
that assert something the code does not do. Four are regressions from this
branch's compression, six were already inaccurate upstream and were carried
forward when the comment was reworded.

- test_memory_curator: the gate uses mean pairwise cosine, which is 0 for an
orthogonal basis at any N, so scattered sets are rejected. The old note
described centroid cosine (1/sqrt(N)) and drew the opposite conclusion.
- useMemories: /generate writes 'running' before it returns. forcePolling
exists because refetchInterval reads a status cache that still says
  'complete'.
- useUserPreferences: writeEpoch counts writes, not reads.
- tunnel.rs: PROVIDERS holds one entry. Restore the note that srv.us is the
intended second, pending a key of its own.
- imageFallback: clearing img.onerror does not detach a React onError prop, so
nothing detaches and the fallback has to be an asset that cannot fail.
- ONNXSessionBase: get_session takes _lock before inference does, so inference
can block. The split keeps a long run from holding up create and close.
- memory_scoring: composite_score renormalizes, so a zero does not put every
  video below every photo.
- layout.ts, useShareTunnel, memories.ts: three more claims narrowed to what
  the code actually guarantees.

CI on dev type-checks every Python file a PR touches, in full. 27 of the files this PR edited carry type errors that predate it, so their comment cleanup moves to AOSSIE-Org#1499's passes instead of pulling a typing pass into a docs PR. routes/folders.py and test_folders.py stay, since they hold the permission fix and its test; their five errors were folder IDs annotated as int (they are TEXT) and four unannotated dicts.
AOSSIE-Org#1498 deletes the conftest.py comment along with the line under it, and AOSSIE-Org#1349 drops the executor comment where it adds the single-worker note. Editing them here as well would make whichever PR merges second conflict.

Merged dev and resolved the 14 conflicts. CI on dev now type-checks every touched Python file in full, and 27 files here carry 286 errors that predate this PR, so 9d79aca returns them to their dev state and their cleanup moves to #1499. The permission fix stays, with five annotation-only fixes in routes/folders.py and test_folders.py. The body has re-measured numbers and the list of deferred files.

Section labels, step narration and comments that repeat the line below them go. Comments that were wrong are corrected: settings.py named two services above the share listener where one is defined, ONNX.py said CPU above a GPU default, YOLO.py described the wrong box in NMS, and a yolo_mapping test still said INSERT OR REPLACE after the move to an upsert. Twelve TODO markers in model_registry.py go too; the PLACEHOLDER values already flag those entries.
db_create_YOLO_classes_table printed os.getcwd() each time the backend started, under a '# print current directory:' comment. It was debug output with no reader.
JSX section labels that name the element below them, test narration that repeats the assertion, and selector and API section headers go. ApplicationControlsCard loses an empty finally block whose only content was a note explaining why it was empty.
A recheck of every comment this PR removes or rewrites found reasons the shorter versions lost. ONNXSessionBase stated its lock rationale backwards, and the tunnel module lost why ssh is not bundled (a binary served from unversioned URLs). Also restored: why exception info is cleared in the uvicorn intercept handler, why folders are walked with recursive=False, the Pillow 9.1 antialiasing note and why encode() runs outside the tokenizer lock, the FK chain a folders test builds, why image_semantic_labels is dropped, what the semantic search test values must satisfy, that a non-playable VideoCard never looks playable, that MEDIA_GRID_CLASS callers add their own padding, and why useShareTunnel asks the Rust side.
Both pass the changed-file MyPy check unless models/YOLO.py is checked alongside them, so they no longer need deferring. FaceDetector's header named a path the file has never had.
