Release Notes

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/a11y)

v4.56.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/admin-ui)

v2.11.0

Compare Source

v2.10.0

Compare Source

Internal
  • Stop publishing the src directory to npm. The package's exports field only exposes the built artifacts, so the source files were unreachable by consumers and only inflated the package size (#77285).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/boot)

v0.23.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/build)

v0.24.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Carry a widget's attributes from widget.json into build/widgets/registry.php (#82485).
  • Build .cjs, .mts and .cts source files, including route and widget entry points, and rewrite their local imports to the emitted .mjs or .cjs extension (#83071).
  • Import route stage, inspector and canvas files by their full file name, so a route entry no longer depends on esbuild extending an extensionless path (#83071).
Internal
  • Declare @wordpress/theme as a dev dependency, so the types of the optional peer dependency resolve when dependencies are isolated (#83129).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/compose)

v8.9.0

Compare Source

Bug Fixes
  • useFocusOutside: Cancel the previous pending blur check so repeated blur events from portaled content do not report focus leaving after it returns (#81930).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/data)

v10.56.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Optimized store listener registration and execution (#82842).
  • Resolvers can define getResolutionArgs to derive the resolution arguments from the selector arguments, letting several selector calls share a single resolution (#82638).
  • Stabilize the __unstableNormalizeArgs selector property as normalizeArgs. The old name still works (#83067).
  • Optimized registry.subscribe behavior when the subscribed store doesn't yet exist (#83346).
  • useSelect: async-mode subscribers share a single store subscription per store and are notified at idle time instead of inside the dispatch (#82821).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/dataviews)

v19.1.0

Compare Source

New Features
  • Let a picker compose its footer from its parts: DataViewsPicker.Footer and DataViewsPicker.Pagination render their children in place of their default contents, the new DataViewsPicker.PageSelect, DataViewsPicker.PageNavigation and DataViewsPicker.Actions sub-components are the parts to put inside them, and each takes a className (#83281).
Enhancements
  • DataViewsPicker: Footer action buttons now honor an action's isEligible, disabling the button when no selected item is eligible and passing only the eligible items to the callback (#83281).
Bug Fixes
  • Grid layout: when the title is hidden (showTitle: false) and items are clickable, label each item's clickable media area with its title instead of the generic "Navigate to item" (#82639).
  • DataForm: Hide the edit button of disabled fields in the panel layout, as it already is for read-only fields (#82957).
Internal
  • Update Ariakit to 0.4.40 (#83278).
  • Remove obsolete Jest test dependencies and types (#82975).
  • Update @base-ui/react to 1.8.0 for the bundled UI components in the /wp entrypoint (#82835).
  • Update Ariakit to 0.4.39 and wait for scheduled composite item registration in jsdom tests (#82831).
  • Run rendered DataViews tests in Vitest Browser Mode (#80995).
  • DataForm panel layout: Replace deprecated word-break: break-word with word-break: normal and overflow-wrap: anywhere on field summary controls. (#82776).
Documentation
  • Add entry for isDisabled in README and clarify difference from readOnly fields (#82956).

v19.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Removed the rich text options (className, clientId, allowedFormats, disableFormats, withoutInteractiveFormatting, preserveWhiteSpace, disableLineBreaks) from the config prop of DataFormControlProps. They were added for the built-in richtext control (#78471), which has since moved to @wordpress/editor (#81430), so nothing in this package sets or reads them (#82330).

  • DataForm: a combined form field (one with children) is now treated purely as a layout container. Its id is no longer resolved against the field definitions: a field sharing that id no longer contributes validation rules to the group, and the panel layout no longer uses it for the collapsed summary or readOnly state, falling back to the group's first leaf child instead (#82175).

If a combined field relied on sharing its id with a field to pick the panel summary, declare it through layout.summary instead. For example, a discussion field whose render summarizes comment_status and ping_status together:

// Before: the summary came from the `discussion` field because the group shares its id.
    const form = {
    	layout: { type: 'panel' },
    	fields: [
    		{ id: 'discussion', children: [ 'comment_status', 'ping_status' ] },
    	],
    };

// After: the summary field is explicit. Without it, the group would
// now be summarized by its first child, `comment_status`.
    const form = {
    	layout: { type: 'panel' },
    	fields: [
    		{
    			id: 'discussion',
layout: { type: 'panel', summary: 'discussion' },
    			children: [ 'comment_status', 'ping_status' ],
    		},
    	],
    };

If a combined field relied on a same-id field's isValid rules being applied to the group, move those rules to the child fields.

Enhancements
  • DataForm: Add a showPlaceholderIfEmpty option to the panel layout, which shows the field's placeholder in the summary when the value is empty (#82527).
  • Give unselected multi-selection filter indicators solid, themed backgrounds. (#82391)
  • Validated form controls: Use --wpds-color-stroke-interactive-error for the invalid-state focus ring and border (#82410).
  • DataForm: Communicate the timezone a datetime value is edited in. When the site timezone differs from the visitor's, the control renders help text under the input naming the site timezone: the zone name (e.g. (CEST) Europe/Madrid) or the UTC offset for sites pinned to one (#82291).
  • Export the DataViewsProps and ItemWithId types (#82326).
  • Export the DataViewsProps and ItemWithId types and document every type property (#82326).
Bug Fixes
  • DataViews and DataViewsPicker: the table and pickerTable layouts no longer render an empty column for an id in view.fields that has no matching field definition, matching what the other layouts already did. The column header menu moves, inserts and hides columns relative to the rendered columns, so a skipped id no longer offsets those operations; such ids are dropped from view.fields the next time the menu changes the view (#82601).
  • Fix Field.sort TypeScript type definition to reflect that sort receives extracted field values rather than Item objects (#82162).
  • DataForm: Render read-only fields without requiring an edit control (#82514).
  • Operators: Support the isAny and isNone filter operators for numeric field values, which previously matched nothing (#77942).
  • Field types: Drop isAll from the valid operators of the number, integer, text, email, url and telephone types. Their values are scalars, so "includes all of" can never hold for more than one selected value (#82463).
  • DataViews and DataViewsPicker: move the view back to the last available page when it points past the end of the collection, for instance after deleting the only item of the last page (#82244).
Documentation
  • DataViews: Document that the layout.styles of the table and pickerTable views applies to the columns listed in fields and not to the primary column, which takes the width the other columns leave over. Fix the swapped maxWidth/minWidth descriptions of ColumnStyle (#82238).
Internal
  • Declare the dependencies imported by the ./wp bundle (build-wp/index.js) so they resolve without relying on hoisting. (#81843)
  • DataViews: Use Menu.PrefixIcon for table column menu icons. (#82346)
  • DataForm date control: Space ValidityIndicator with Stack now that the indicator has no outer margin. (#82267)
  • Add a HierarchicalLevels story that demonstrates getItemLevel and view.showLevels in the table layout (#82344).
  • Remove unused dependency @wordpress/primitives (#82103).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).
  • Note in the /wp bundle build script that its singleton externals list must stay in sync with the transitive private API usage check (#82027).
  • Update the @types/node development dependency to v24, matching the Node.js version the repository builds and tests against (#82616).
Bug Fix
  • Color filter and selected-option icons with color rather than fill, so they stay visible now that those icons are stroke-based. (#78812)
  • DataViews: Scope the search field's fixed width to the default UI search row (#82128).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/icons)

v17.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • A further 236 icons are now stroke-based. Use CSS color rather than fill to recolor them. (#82540, #82754)
New Features
  • Add the fullscreenExit, justifySpaceEvenly and reaction icons (#83338).
Enhancements
  • Redraw a further 236 icons as stroke-based for variable stroke-width support, following the convention introduced in #78808, and refine the already stroke-based image and commentAuthorAvatar drawings. Most retain their original footprint; the table icons, capturePhoto, and image are slightly smaller, and several drawings in the final batch change by design. (#82540, #82754)
  • manifest.json: The public property is now a tri-state. Omitting it keeps an icon in the JS library only; true ships it to WordPress Core and exposes it through the icons REST API, making it selectable in the Icon block; false ships it and registers it in the core collection for server-side use via wp_get_icon(), while hiding it from the REST API and the Icon block. (#82634)
  • manifest.json: The public field now only controls whether an icon ships to WordPress Core (#83277).
  • The brush, dashboard, link, media, page, pin, plugins, sites, tool, update and wordpress icons now ship to WordPress Core as non-public icons: they are registered in the core collection and stay available to server-side code via wp_get_icon(), but are not exposed through the icons REST API and are not selectable in the Icon block. (#82634, #79451)
  • manifest.json: New collections property, listing the collections an icon is registered in once it ships to WordPress Core. It replaces the public property and introduces the core-admin collection, which is not public and holds the icons the WordPress admin interface renders. (#83261, #79451)
  • comment and plugins: redraw for better optical balance (#83338).
  • brush and media: redraw. brush becomes a wide paintbrush rather than a pencil, which the existing pencil icon already covers, and media becomes a camera with music notes so it is no longer easily confused with image (#83338).
Bug Fixes
  • cornerBottomLeft, cornerBottomRight, cornerTopLeft, cornerTopRight, sidesBottom, sidesHorizontal, sidesLeft, sidesRight, sidesTop and sidesVertical: dim the rest of the box again, so each variant reads as one highlighted side or corner rather than a plain box. The dimming was dropped when these were redrawn as stroke icons. (#82940)
  • Correct malformed drawings for formatIndent, formatIndentRTL, formatOutdent, formatOutdentRTL, lock, and post, and restore the missing second bar in pause. (#82540, #82754)
Internal
  • Remove obsolete Jest test dependencies and types (#82975).
  • Run rendered icon tests in Vitest Browser Mode (#80995).

v7.56.0

Compare Source

Bug Fixes
  • useRichText: Show the boundary of the active format or object when the editing host around the element has focus, not only when the element itself does (#83385).
  • useRichText: apply every selection change from props, including the second of two consecutive ones, and only while the element or an editing host around it has focus. The hook no longer moves focus to the element; the consumer decides where focus goes (#82581).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/route)

v0.21.0

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/theme)

v2.2.0

Compare Source

Internal
  • Remove obsolete Jest test dependencies and types (#82975).
  • Run rendered Theme tests in Vitest Browser Mode (#80995).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/ui)

v0.23.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Combobox.Root: filteredItems now uses the selected value type instead of any. Consumers that pass object items with primitive selected values must use matching item and value types. (#82835)
  • SearchableChipSelect, SearchableChipSelectControl: Remove the readOnly prop (#82863).
  • Select.Item, SelectControl.Item: Children must start with ItemLabel, followed by zero or more ItemDescription components. Pass ItemLabel instead of a string. For SelectControl items, set label and optional description on each item. (#82369)
New Features
Enhancements
  • Fieldset: Use a tighter gap between the legend and an immediately following description or details (#82729).
  • Select, SelectControl: Mark as recommended for use in a WordPress environment (#83030).
  • Select, SelectControl: Add ItemLabel and ItemDescription subcomponents. Multiple descriptions contribute to aria-describedby in DOM order. SelectControl items may include an optional description string. (#82369)
  • Select, SelectControl: Align the selected item with the trigger by default, and drop the popup max-height cap when that alignment is enabled (#82043).
  • Select, Combobox, Autocomplete: Allow browsing read-only controls while keeping their value unchanged (#82835).
  • Radio: Enlarge the hit target to 24px without changing the visual size. (#83275)
  • Checkbox: Enlarge the hit target to 24px without changing the visual size. (#82597)
  • SearchableChipSelect, SearchableChipSelectControl, SearchableSelect: Add statusContent for the list status live region. The region stays mounted. Use it for async loading. Use emptyContent for the empty list. (#82592)
  • Autocomplete, Combobox, SearchableChipSelect, SearchableChipSelectControl, SearchableSelect: Export a useFilteredItems hook that returns the client-side filtered item list, for result-count status. (#82592)
Bug Fixes
  • SearchableChipSelect, SearchableChipSelectControl, Combobox.ChipWithRemove: Assistive technology now hears selected chip names, how to remove them, and how to move to them from the input (#82863).
  • Autocomplete: Use valid grid and rowgroup semantics without local accessibility overrides (#82835).
  • Menu: Center labels, descriptions, suffixes, shortcuts, and submenu chevrons within items, including items with taller prefix or suffix content. (#82847)
  • Menu: vertically center single-line item labels while preserving first-line alignment for wrapped content. (#81921)
  • Autocomplete, Combobox, Menu, and Select: Restore the highlighted item indicator in forced-colors mode, which wp-admin's global CSS was suppressing. (#82772)
Internal
  • Remove obsolete Jest test dependencies and types (#82975).
  • Remove the obsolete Jest console test dependency and matcher types (#82843).
  • Update @base-ui/react from 1.7.0 to 1.8.0 (#82835).
  • Run UI interaction tests in Vitest Browser Mode (#80995).
  • VisuallyHidden: Replace deprecated word-wrap with overflow-wrap and remove related Stylelint suppression (#82970).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/views)

v1.23.0

Compare Source

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/widget-dashboard)

v0.8.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Tile padding defaults to --wpds-dimension-padding-lg instead of the
    Card's --wpds-dimension-padding-2xl, and the header/body gap follows it;
    --wp-widget-dashboard-tile-padding still overrides both
    (#82961).
  • Show the selected widget width in its options menu and add an ellipsis to
the reset action that opens a confirmation dialog (#81929).
  • Widget header: a title the row clips is shown in full in the header
infotip, which now also opens on hover and appears for a clipped title
even when the widget declares no help note
    (#82226).
Internal
  • Disable custom-property-pattern for this package so private --_wp-* tokens remain allowed (#83075).
  • Route link actions through HostLink from @wordpress/widget-primitives,
replacing the per-surface host link gating and getActionRoute
    (#82952).
  • Use UI Spinner and remove the direct Components dependency (#82837).
  • Migrate dashboard menus from the private Components API to the public
    @wordpress/ui Menu (#81929).
  • Run rendered Widget Dashboard tests in Vitest Browser Mode (#80995).
WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/widget-primitives)

v0.8.0

Compare Source

New Features
  • HostLink: an anchor that mounts the host router's link for a target
links.match recognizes, and a plain anchor otherwise, including for a
download or a _blank target. Composes through the render prop of a
    UI link (#82952).
  • WidgetModuleRecord.attributes: a record carries the attribute schema
    widget.json declares, as WidgetAttributeRecord[]; useWidgetTypes
merges it by id over the module's entries, the record winning a shared
key and isValid merging rule by rule
    (#82485).
Documentation
  • Add a WithHostLink story: the same action declarations routed through
HostLink against a demo router, with a toggle that removes the links
    capability (#82952).

Code Coverage Summary

This PR did not change code coverage!

That could be good or bad, depending on the situation. Everything covered before, and still is? Great! Nothing was covered before? Not so great. 🤷
