Associations between air temperature, air pollution and cardiovascular health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic in England
Both COVID-19 and environmental factors, such as air pollution and air temperature, increase the rates of cardiovascular events. However, current literature 1) is mainly focused on the effect of environmental factors on the spreading and severity of COVID-19, and not on how environmental factors impacted cardiovascular health during the pandemic. 2) Rarely includes person level data to examine the impact of environmental factors on cardiovascular health, and 3) Overlooks the interaction effect of COVID-19 and air temperature/pollution on cardiovascular risk. Climate change underlines the relevance of such research.
Our research aims to quantify the effect of environmental factors, specifically air temperature and pollution levels, on cardiovascular outcomes like heart attacks and strokes during the COVID-19 pandemic and how environmental factors interact with COVID-19 and affect cardiovascular outcomes like heart attacks and strokes. It will help identify who is at greatest risk of severe cardiovascular outcomes due to environmental factors and who is most vulnerable during a pandemic such as COVID-19. This will support more informed decision-making regarding planning and resource allocation for healthcare services.
