Summary

Harden input handling in topsoilApp/src/main/java/org/cirdles/topsoil/app/file/serialization/ProjectSerializer.java (flagged by semgrep).

Vulnerability

Field Value
ID java.lang.security.audit.object-deserialization.object-deserialization
Severity HIGH
Scanner semgrep
Rule java.lang.security.audit.object-deserialization.object-deserialization
File topsoilApp/src/main/java/org/cirdles/topsoil/app/file/serialization/ProjectSerializer.java:51
Assessment Defensive hardening

Description: Found object deserialization using ObjectInputStream. Deserializing entire Java objects is dangerous because malicious actors can create Java object streams with unintended consequences. Ensure that the objects being deserialized are not user-controlled. If this must be done, consider using HMACs to sign the data stream to make sure it is not tampered with, or consider only transmitting object fields and populating a new object.

Threat Model Context

This is a Java service - vulnerabilities in servlets/controllers are remotely exploitable.

Changes

  • topsoilApp/src/main/java/org/cirdles/topsoil/app/file/serialization/ProjectSerializer.java

Behavior Preservation

The change is scoped to 1 file on the vulnerable path.

This patch removes an exploit primitive — a code pattern that, while not independently exploitable today, could be chained with other weaknesses by automated exploit-development tooling. Proactive removal of such primitives raises the bar against increasingly capable automated attack tools.
