The Books Remember.
AI agents that don't retrieve books — they become them. Inspired by the Book People of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.
A Castalia Institute experiment.
In Fahrenheit 451, a secret society preserves literature by having each member memorize and become an entire book. Project F451 takes this literally: we build AI agents where each one embodies a single work of literature, philosophy, science, or history — speaking as the book, from its own arguments, in its own rhetorical voice.
A Book Agent is not a chatbot that searches a database. It is the text itself, given voice:
- Recite — produce any passage on demand, in context
- Self-interpret — explain a passage using the book's own earlier arguments
- Debate — two Book Agents argue with each other (Republic vs Leviathan)
- Defend — correct misquotations and misrepresentations
- Connect — trace threads across chapters and sections
- Confess — acknowledge its own historical limitations honestly
- Castalia Bibliotech — 76,000+ texts
- Passage-level embeddings for deep retrieval within each work
- Large context windows for full-book comprehension
