# Null check against collection query param
Hibernate ORM
kevinm416 March 4, 2025, 11:46pm 1
I’m creating a query using EntityManager:
`@Entity
public class Branch {
@Id
@GeneratedValue
private long id;
}
@Entity
public class Invoice {
@Id
@GeneratedValue
private long id;
@ManyToOne(fetch = FetchType.LAZY, optional = false)
@JoinColumn(updatable = false)
private Branch branch;
}
`
` TypedQuery<Invoice> query =
entityManager
.createQuery(
" SELECT i " +
" FROM Invoice i " +
" WHERE (:branchIds IS NULL OR i.branch.id IN :branchIds) ",
Invoice.class)
.setParameter("branchIds", List.of(123L));
`
Which gives the error:
`java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Parameter value [[123]] did not match expected type [SqmBasicValuedSimplePath(org.hibernate.bugs.Invoice(i).branch.id)]
Instead, use the JPA Criteria API and add predicates as well as potentially necessary joins for these predicates only when you have an actual value given. This will actually make it easier for your database to optimize the final SQL query.
Having said that, binding a list here should actually work though, so if you reproduced this with ORM 6.6+, please create a bug ticket in our issue tracker and attach that reproducer.

> This sort of conditional querying is just broken by design
I know you don’t like this justification in the hibernate forums, but this query works (and works well as far as I can tell) using a spring-data-jpa repository. I can’t find anything explaining why it shouldn’t work in hibernate directly so I’m asking. </excerpt>

• a subquery,
• one of the collection-handling functions defined above,
• a query parameter, or
• an expression evaluating to a SQL array.The type of the expression on the left, and the types of all the values on the right must be compatible.JPQL limits the legal types to string, numeric, date/time, and enum types, and in JPQL the left expression must be either:• a state field, which means a basic attribute, excluding associations and embedded attributes, or
• an entity type expression.HQL is far more permissive. HQL itself does not restrict the type in any way, though the database itself might. Even embedded attributes are allowed, although that feature depends on the level of support for tuple or "row value" constructors in the underlying database.from Payment as payment

### Version 7.2.12.Final
7.2.12.Final
Created 19 April 2026.
Applies Hibernate aspects into the build
Add this plugin to your build using the plugins DSL:
`plugins {
id("org.hibernate.orm") version "7.2.12.Final"
}`
See also:
* Adding the plugin to build logic for usage in precompiled script plugins.
See the relevant documentation for more information.
Add this plugin as a dependency to `<convention-plugins-build>/build.gradle(.kts)`:
`dependencies {
implementation("org.hibernate.orm:org.hibernate.orm.gradle.plugin:7.2.12.Final")
}`
It can then be applied in the precompiled script plugin:
`plugins {
id("org.hibernate.orm")
}`
* The legacy method of plugin application. See the relevant documentation for more information.
`buildscript {
repositories {
gradlePluginPortal()
}
dependencies {
classpath("org.hibernate.orm:org.hibernate.orm.gradle.plugin:7.2.12.Final")
}
}
apply(plugin = "org.hibernate.orm")`</excerpt>

L7: Hi,
L8:
L9: I am getting the following exception after upgrading my dependencies:
L10:
L11: org.hibernate.QueryException:
L12: Named parameter not bound : types_1
L13:
L14: The exception occurs while executing a paginated query. The stack trace goes through:
L15:
L16: org.springframework.data.jpa.repository.query.JpaQueryExecution$PagedExecution.count
L17:
L18: The relevant versions are:
L19: Working:
L20: Spring Boot 3.1.2
L21: Spring Data JPA 3.1.2
L22: Hibernate 6.2.6.Final
L23:
L24: Failing:
L25: Spring Boot 3.1.12
L26: Spring Data JPA 3.1.12
L27: Hibernate 6.2.25.Final
L28:
L29: When I revert to the older Spring Boot/Hibernate dependency versions, the issue does not occur.
L30:
L31: The query contains an optional collection parameter similar to:
L32:
L33: AND (
L34: COALESCE(:types) IS NULL
L35: OR entity.type IN (:types)
L36: )
L37:
L38: where `types` is a `Set<String>`.
L39:
L40: The query works with Hibernate 6.2.6.Final but fails with Hibernate 6.2.25.Final.
L41: I understand that collection parameters are normally used with:
L42:
L43: entity.type IN (:types)
L44:
L45: I also found discussions indicating that list parameters should not be used with `COALESCE()` or `IS NULL`.
L46:
L47: My questions are:
L48:
L49: 1. Is using a collection-valued parameter with `COALESCE()` unsupported in Hibernate 6.x?
L50:
L51: 2. Were there any relevant changes between Hibernate 6.2.6.Final and 6.2.25.Final regarding collection parameter binding?
L52:
L53: 3. Could this behavior be related to the pagination count query?
L54: 4. Could the change in Spring Boot / Spring Data JPA versions also be involved?
L55:
L56: 5. What is the recommended way to handle an optional collection parameter in JPQL?
L57:
L58: I am trying to determine whether this is caused by a change in Hibernate, Spring Data JPA, or simply an unsupported query pattern that happened to work with the older dependency versions.
L59:
L60: Thanks!

We rejected support for this broken `:parameterList is null or col in :parameterList` also for HQL, because we don’t think this is a good solution that people should use. This approach confuses the query planners of many databases and often, this approach leads to more joins than necessary.
We recommend to use a query builder like e.g. the `CriteriaBuilder` if you need to construct dynamic filters.
In your particular case, you could make use of arrays, since Hibernate ORM supports that e.g.
`where array_length(:parameterList) = 0 or array_contains(:parameterList, column)`
and bind the values as e.g. `Integer[]`.
Jeff_Maxwell April 26, 2024, 7:45pm 5
While `CriteriaBuilder` or `HQL` queries might work with the minimalist example I provided, they will not work for queries that require the use of features and constructs those tools do not support.
At the end of the day automatically adding parentheses to native queries without regard to whether the targeted DB can support them universally and without a way to disable the functionality is a serious limitation to one of the most valuable features of the product.

I’m creating a query using EntityManager:

Is there documentation somewhere about why this query is not expected to work, and how I should write it? I’m confused why it wouldn’t work as written.
beikov March 5, 2025, 9:57am 2
Well, I could ask you the other way around, where it is written in the documentation that this is supposed to work?
This sort of conditional querying is just broken by design. It might have worked by accident in previous versions of Hibernate ORM, but it is not how you should write this.

I know you don’t like this justification in the hibernate forums, but this query works (and works well as far as I can tell) using a spring-data-jpa repository. I can’t find anything explaining why it shouldn’t work in hibernate directly so I’m asking. </excerpt>

# Issue with coalesce and lists after upgrading from Hibernate v5 to v6
thomas May 30, 2024, 10:01am 1
Hi at all,
I am using the coalesce function from MariaDB to skip parameters, if they are not set. Through this I have created an optional filter for my native query, for instance:
`@Query(value="select * from book where coalesce(:filterAuthorIds, null) is null or author_id in (:filterAuthorIds)", nativeQuery=true)
Page<Book> readBook(List<Integer> filterAuthorIds);
`
The real query is of course much more complex. I have simplified it to make it easier for you to understand my problem.
“filterAuthorIds” should obviously filter the books by the author_id.
It worked fine, until I upgraded the Java project from Spring 2.7.18 to Spring 3 and thus from Hibernate v5 to v6.
The query generated by Hibernate v5 looks like this:
`coalesce(?, ?, null) is null or author_id in (? , ?)
`
The query generated by Hibernate v6 looks like this:
`coalesce((?,?), null) is null or author_id in (?,?)
`
Now there are parentheses around the list in coalesce. So I got an error from MariaDB:
`Operand should contain 1 column(s)
`
, because the SQL statement doesn’t work in MariaDB:
`select * from book where coalesce((25003,25904), null) is null or author_id in (25003,25904);
`
Now I’m looking for a way to solve this problem. I need an optional filter in my native query for in-statements.
Does anyone have any idea?
mbladel May 30, 2024, 10:41am 2
This was unsupported behavior that happened to work in Hibernate 5, the `coalesce` function is not designed to work with anything but scalar values. You should check if your parameter list is empty and decide whether to include the `in` predicate or not creating the query dynamically through e.g. the Criteria API or, since your using Spring, Specifications:
` public static Specification<Boot> isFromAuthors(List<Integer> filterAuthorIds) {
return (root, query, builder) -> {
return filterAuthorIds.isEmpty ?
null :
root.get("author").in(departments)
};
}
`
This was reported before, you can find more details in the comments of this Jira: [HHH-15743] - Hibernate JIRA.
After upgrading hibernate from v5 to v6, query with LocalDateTime parameter throws an error

Hi @mbladel,
that’s not, what I was hoping for to read, but thanks for your explanation and link. I think, I will have to rewrite my statements then - the Specification might help.

# Possible change in collection parameter handling between Hibernate 6.2.6.Final and 6.2.25.Final
akhilsb97 September 21, 2026, 9:29am 1
Hi,
I am getting the following exception after upgrading my dependencies:
org.hibernate.QueryException:
Named parameter not bound : types_1
The exception occurs while executing a paginated query. The stack trace goes through:
org.springframework.data.jpa.repository.query.JpaQueryExecution$PagedExecution.count
The relevant versions are:
Working:
Spring Boot 3.1.2
Spring Data JPA 3.1.2
Hibernate 6.2.6.Final
Failing:
Spring Boot 3.1.12
Spring Data JPA 3.1.12
Hibernate 6.2.25.Final
When I revert to the older Spring Boot/Hibernate dependency versions, the issue does not occur.
The query contains an optional collection parameter similar to:
AND (
COALESCE(:types) IS NULL
OR entity.type IN (:types)
)
where `types` is a `Set<String>`.
The query works with Hibernate 6.2.6.Final but fails with Hibernate 6.2.25.Final.
I understand that collection parameters are normally used with:
entity.type IN (:types)
I also found discussions indicating that list parameters should not be used with `COALESCE()` or `IS NULL`.
My questions are:
1. Is using a collection-valued parameter with `COALESCE()` unsupported in Hibernate 6.x?
2. Were there any relevant changes between Hibernate 6.2.6.Final and 6.2.25.Final regarding collection parameter binding?
3. Could this behavior be related to the pagination count query?
4. Could the change in Spring Boot / Spring Data JPA versions also be involved?
5. What is the recommended way to handle an optional collection parameter in JPQL?
I am trying to determine whether this is caused by a change in Hibernate, Spring Data JPA, or simply an unsupported query pattern that happened to work with the older dependency versions.
Thanks!

It never was supported and only worked coincidentally.

Check the changelogs or commits on GitHub to see for yourself.

Maybe, depends what pagination count query you are using.
Image akhilsb97:

I have no idea what Spring does here, so yeah, for all I can say, it can also be a Spring bug.

Have separate queries, one for an empty list and another for a non-empty list. Or use Criteria queries e.g. through Spring Data Specifications.</excerpt>

Do not bind statuses as both a scalar and a collection.
GET /api/concerts passes a non-null collection to findConcerts or searchConcerts. Each result and count query tests that collection with :statuses IS NULL and uses it with c.status IN :statuses. Hibernate rejects this HQL pattern, so collection binding can fail before query execution and return 500 for valid multi-status requests.
Use a scalar bypass flag and always bind a non-empty collection, or build separate filtered and unfiltered queries.
Suggested fix
- AND (:statuses IS NULL OR c.status IN :statuses)
+ AND (:statusFilterDisabled = true OR c.status IN :statuses)Apply the predicate change to all four result/count queries, add @Param("statusFilterDisabled") boolean statusFilterDisabled to both repository methods, and normalize the service input:
- List<ConcertStatus> statusFilter = statuses == null || statuses.isEmpty() ? null : statuses;
+ boolean statusFilterDisabled = statuses == null || statuses.isEmpty();
+ List<ConcertStatus> statusFilter = statusFilterDisabled
+ ? List.of(ConcertStatus.values())

Update all four result/count queries in ConcertRepository to use a scalar
statusFilterDisabled bypass flag instead of testing the collection parameter
with IS NULL; add this parameter to findConcerts and searchConcerts. In the
service method that prepares the status filter, set the flag for null or empty
input and always bind a non-empty status collection, then pass both values to
the repository calls.
