ci(conda): the conda build legs install .[all] for no later step, which builds cryptography from source on Intel macOS #1854

Closed

Description

@JarryShaw

conda-dist (.github/workflows/cron-conda.yml:454) and the release conda leg (create-release.yml:1347) run pip install -e .[all]. On macos-26-intel that resolves cryptography 50.0.2, which has no Intel wheel, so pip either compiles it or fails (#1828's review).

Nothing after the install uses it:

  • pip download -r conda/requirements.txt needs only pip;
  • conda build uses its own host environment (build.sh calls $PYTHON);
  • the version comes from job outputs;
  • --smoke imports only the stdlib and runs its probe under -I -S.

The release leg also still runs pip install pathlib2 typing_extensions (create-release.yml:1348,1355), which #1821 removed from cron-conda.yml. This analysis comes from reading the steps; no conda job has run since #1825 and #1828.

Fix:

  • drop the .[all] install and the pathlib2 typing_extensions line;
  • keep pip install -U pip setuptools wheel;
  • confirm on the next conda run.
