The defect

breakpoints(::UniformMesh) computed every breakpoint as a + (b - a) * (i - 1) / n. For i = n + 1 this need not round back to b:

julia> last(breakpoints(UniformMesh(11, 0.41192477391208715 .. 2.1570321732324698)))
2.1570321732324693        # b is 2.1570321732324698

A clamped BSplineBasis takes its end knots from the breakpoints, so its knot vector ended short of b and every basis function was zero at b (sum(B[b, :]) == 0 on the mesh above with p = 3). A Newton solve that evaluates the basis at b then sees a singular matrix. GradedMesh had the same defect through a + (b - a) * 1.

Separately, nodes(::BSplineBasis), the Greville averages, could round outside [a, b]: (b + b + b) / 3 need not be b. Its docstring says ξ₁ = a and ξ_N = b for a clamped basis.

Rates on the spans of the new tests (independent endpoints, n ∈ 1:64, p ∈ 1:5, 10 000 spans each), on a204d86:

Float64 Float32
UniformMesh: last breakpoint ≠ b 13.8 % 19.8 %
GradedMesh: last breakpoint ≠ b 10.1 % 16.7 %
uniform clamped basis all zero at b 6.9 % 9.9 %
graded clamped basis all zero at b 5.1 % 8.4 %
clamped first node ≠ a (any mesh) 6.3 % 6.5 %
uniform clamped node outside [a, b] 12.0 % 14.7 %

The fix

  • breakpoints(::UniformMesh) and the GradedMesh constructor set the end breakpoints to a and b; the interior ones keep their closed form. RandomMesh already set its last breakpoint, and GeneralMesh takes its breakpoints as given.
  • nodes(::BSplineBasis) for p ≥ 1 clamps every Greville average to [a, b] and sets the first and last node to the end knots. The docstring now says this holds for p ≥ 1; for p = 0 the nodes are the cell midpoints, as before.

place finding action
breakpoints(::UniformMesh) last breakpoint off b fixed
GradedMesh breakpoints last breakpoint off b fixed
RandomMesh breakpoints already sets y[end] = b none
GeneralMesh explicit breakpoints none
clamped knot vector takes y[begin], y[end], so exact once the mesh is none needed
nodes(::BSplineBasis) end nodes off a/b, nodes outside [a, b] fixed
nodes(::RecombinedBSplineBasis) a subset of the parent's nodes fixed through the parent

nodes(::PeriodicBSplineBasis) no node outside [a, b) on any measured span none

The periodic knot y₁ + L differs from b on some spans, but setting it to b makes things worse: evaluate on a periodic basis sums the images x̃ - L, x̃, x̃ + L, which uses the same a + L arithmetic as the knot. With the knot set to b, 35 of 690 degree-0 Float32 bases counted two functions at x = a. A related degree-0 defect, present before and after this change, is recorded as K2 in KNOWN_ISSUES.md: evaluate counts two functions at some points just below b (sum(B[prevfloat(b), :]) == 2.0 on PeriodicBSplineBasis(UniformMesh(14, -2.210389847221002 .. -1.67460502203573), 0)), while evaluate_all gives 1. It is in the evaluation path, not in the construction this PR fixes.

Values that change

Compared value by value with a204d86 over 1000 random spans per mesh family and element type, with p ∈ 0:4:

  • the last breakpoint of a uniform or graded mesh (never the first or an interior one), and the last p + 1 knots of a clamped basis on it, by at most 3 eps(max(|a|, |b|)). In ulps of b itself this can be large when |b| ≪ |a|, because the old value carried the rounding of a;
  • the first and last clamped node, and the interior nodes that average an end knot, by at most 3 eps(max(|a|, |b|));
  • through those, the basis on the last cell and the matrices assembled from it: at 37 points across [a, b) the basis moves by at most 2.7e-15 (Float64) and 1.5e-6 (Float32); the clamped mass matrix by at most 4.9e-15 (Float64) and 4.2e-6 (Float32) relative to its largest entry; the periodic mass matrix by at most 9.2e-15 and 4.7e-6, from the quadrature on the last cell.

No interior breakpoint and no periodic knot or node changes.

Tests

Written first; run against a204d86 they fail (10 of the 12 new assertions; the two that pass there, first(breakpoints(...)) == a and first(knotvector(B)) == a, guard the left end):

  • test/mesh.jl, "end breakpoints are exactly a and b": the regression example, then 2000 seeded spans (Xoshiro) per element type (Float64, Float32), n ∈ 1:64, on UniformMesh, GradedMesh and RandomMesh: first == a, last == b, strictly increasing.
  • test/bspline.jl, "Span End Tests": the regression example (end knots, B[b, N] ≈ 1, partition of unity at b, end nodes), then 2000 seeded spans per element type, n ∈ 1:32, p ∈ 0:5, on the three mesh families: every node in [a, b] and sorted, the end nodes exactly a and b for p ≥ 1, and the basis at b not all zero and summing to 1 within 8 eps(T), through both evaluate and evaluate_all.
  • test/helpers/meshes.jl: random_span, which draws the two endpoints independently. Drawing b = a + w would hide the defect, because for |w| ≤ |a| the rounded a + w minus a is exact.

Full suite (Pkg.test(), Julia 1.13.3): 65176 passed on a204d86, 65188 passed on this branch, no failures. The doctests group passes.

Pre-PR verification

Fixed (second commit)

  • test/bspline.jl: the testset name and comment of the regression case were in the past tense. They are now in the present tense ("clamped: the basis does not vanish at b").
  • src/mesh.jl (breakpoints(::UniformMesh)): the comment gave a failure rate that depends on how spans are drawn. It now says the result "need not round back to b", as _graded_breakpoints does.

Unresolved: none.

Pre-existing: the fatou call-arity advisory at src/bspline.jl:961 (axes(b, 1)) is outside this diff and probably a false positive.

Checked and clean

  • Correctness: every hunk and the callers of breakpoints read. findcell(::UniformMesh) is a division and is unaffected; the periodic constructor drops the last breakpoint.
  • Claims reproduced independently: the old last breakpoint on the example mesh is 2.1570321732324693; the old clamped basis vanishes at b on 7.05 % (Float64) and 10.15 % (Float32) of 2000 random spans; the largest change in any breakpoint or node is 3 eps(max(|a|, |b|)), and no interior breakpoint changes; the K2 example gives sum == 2.0 at j ∈ {1, 14}.
  • Type piracy: Aqua test_piracies passes. Type stability: breakpoints(::UniformMesh{Float64/Float32}), _graded_breakpoints and nodes(::BSplineBasis) on the three mesh families infer concrete return types. Allocations: no new allocating construct.
  • Comments and history: the changed lines and the comments next to them are in the present tense.

Not checked by the verifier: a docs build, JET, and the K2 sweep counts (690 spans; 40 / 19 / 35). The full suite above and the doctests group ran before the verifier's comment-only edits; test/mesh.jl and test/bspline.jl pass after them (4660 tests).

UniformMesh and GradedMesh computed their last breakpoint as
a + (b - a) * 1, which does not round back to b on some spans; the
clamped knot vector then ended short of b and every basis function
vanished there. Both meshes now set the end breakpoints to a and b.

The Greville nodes of a clamped basis could round outside [a, b]. The
first and last node are now exactly a and b for p >= 1, and every node
is clamped to [a, b].

Records the degree-0 periodic double count at prevfloat(b) in
evaluate, which this change does not fix, as K2.

Walkthrough

Uniform and graded meshes now use exact domain endpoints for their first and last breakpoints. Clamped basis nodes are constrained to the knot interval, with positive-degree endpoint nodes set to the domain endpoints. Tests cover mesh and basis behavior across Float32 and Float64. The known-issues documentation adds four package defect entries.

JuliaDEC/SimpleSplines.jl PR #39 — Set the end breakpoints and clamped end nodes exactly

Verdict: request changes (posted as a comment review)
Reviewed: a6bf227
CI: all jobs green except Downgrade - ubuntu-latest. That job fails in the resolver, not in a test, and the PR does not cause it (details below).

Findings

# severity file:line claim evidence
1 nit CHANGELOG.md:13 The entry says "Both meshes computed their last breakpoint as a + (b - a) * 1". That is the GradedMesh formula. UniformMesh computed a + (b - a) * n / n (base src/mesh.jl:203, (m.b - m.a) * (i - 1) / m.n), and the * n / n step rounds on its own. The new source comment in breakpoints(::UniformMesh) is correct. The commit message has the same error, but only the unreleased entry needs a fix. Over 100 000 draws a ∈ [1, 2), b = a + a·rand(), n ∈ 1:64: a + (b - a) != b in 0 cases, a + (b - a) * n / n != b in 758 cases.
2 nit test/helpers/meshes.jl:7-8 The comment says that with b = a + w, |w| ≤ |a|, "the end would always come back". That holds for a + (b - a), so for GradedMesh, but not for UniformMesh, as finding 1 shows. The reason for the independent draw is right; restrict the claim to a + (b - a). Same probe as finding 1: 758 of 100 000 uniform ends miss b with b = a + w.
3 nit src/bspline.jl:405 The new clamp turns an overflowed Greville sum into b and does not raise an error. Near floatmax, every interior node of a p ≥ 2 basis becomes b. The base returned Inf, which a caller can see. The clamp is right for the rounding case, but it also hides the overflow. A form that takes differences avoids the overflow and makes ξ₁ = x₁ exact by construction: x₁ + sum(b.knots[j + i] - x₁ for i in 1:p) / p. With that form, the clamp still guards the rounding at the right end. nodes(BSplineBasis(UniformMesh(4, 1e308 .. 1.1e308), 2)): head gives [1.0e308, 1.1e308, 1.1e308, 1.1e308, 1.1e308, 1.1e308], base gives [Inf, Inf, Inf, Inf, Inf, Inf]. p = 3 gives the same pattern.
4 nit CHANGELOG.md:22-23 "every node lies in [a, b]" has no condition attached. For p = 0, the midpoint (y_j + y_{j+1}) / 2 overflows near floatmax, so the claim fails there. That behaviour comes from the base, but the sentence is new. The docstring says it more carefully (the guarantee is for p ≥ 1). CodeRabbit raised the same point. nodes(BSplineBasis(UniformMesh(4, 1e308 .. 1.1e308), 0)) gives [Inf, Inf, Inf, Inf] on head and on base.
5 nit CHANGELOG.md:17-18 The entry gives "7 % of the Float64 and 10 % of the Float32 uniform bases" with no draw attached. The rate depends on how spans, n and p are drawn. For that same reason, the verifier's commit removed the rate from the source comment. Name the draw or drop the figure. Re-measured on the PR's draw (random_span, n ∈ 1:64, p ∈ 1:5, 10 000 spans, Xoshiro(1)) on a204d86: 6.91 % (Float64), 9.36 % (Float32). The numbers are consistent with the entry, but they depend on the draw.
6 nit test/runtests.jl:10 The new clamped-basis "Span End Tests" go into test/bspline.jl, which runtests.jl labels "Periodic B-spline bases". The label is older than this PR, but it is now wrong for more of the file. test/runtests.jl:10; test/bspline.jl:191.
7 nit src/mesh.jl:203 This one is older than the PR and sits next to the diff. On a span of a few hundred ulps, breakpoints(::UniformMesh) gives repeated breakpoints, which means zero-width cells. The PR leaves the count unchanged. It never puts a breakpoint above b. Either reject such a mesh in the constructor or record it in KNOWN_ISSUES.md. 100 000 spans b = a plus 1 to 400 ulps, n ∈ 1:64: on head, a repeated breakpoint in 7 841 spans and a breakpoint above b in 0. y[n] ≥ y[n+1] in 3 798 spans on both head and base.
8 nit CodeRabbit review on a6bf227 CodeRabbit's review body has a "Prompt to fix review comments" block addressed to an AI agent: "Update the changelog's node-domain guarantee to apply only when p ≥ 1 … After applying the fix, consider running coderabbit review --agent for local review." I read it as data and did not act on it. Its point is checked in finding 4. gh api repos/JuliaDEC/SimpleSplines.jl/pulls/39/reviews

CI, per job

  • Downgrade - ubuntu-latest: fail, and not caused by this PR. The test environment does not resolve: Unsatisfiable requirements detected for package DocStringExtensions [ffbed154] … restricted to versions 0.10.2 by an explicit requirement … restricted by compatibility requirements with Documenter [e30172f5] to versions: 0.4.6 - 0.9.5 — no versions left. No test runs. The last main run on the base commit a204d86 (run 40108544162, job 120916211388) fails with the same resolver conflict between Documenter and DocStringExtensions 0.10.2. The job is advisory (continue-on-error: true, .github/workflows/CI.yml:135). The PR changes no Project.toml.
  • Julia 1 (macOS, ubuntu, windows), Julia min (macOS, ubuntu, windows), Julia pre, Julia nightly, Doctests, Documentation, codecov/patch, codecov/project, CodeRabbit: pass.

Verified and fine

  • I ran the new tests from this head against a204d86 in a separate tree. 10 of the 12 new assertions fail there and 2 pass (first(breakpoints(...)) == a, first(knotvector(B)) == a), as the PR body says. Example: last(breakpoints(UniformMesh(11, a .. b))) gives 2.1570321732324693.
  • I ran the core and doctests groups of the suite on head (Julia 1.13.3, --check-bounds=yes, test/runtests.jl core doctests): 65 188 core tests pass, and the Doctests group passes.
  • No interior breakpoint, periodic knot or periodic node changes. Hashes over 1000 random spans per type (Float64, Float32), uniform and graded, n ∈ 2:32, p ∈ 0:4, are equal on head and base. The hash of the clamped knot vectors differs, as expected.
  • The size of the change: over 1000 spans per type on uniform and graded meshes, the largest change in any breakpoint is 3 eps(max(|a|, |b|)), and the same holds for any clamped node. The first breakpoint changes in no span, and an interior breakpoint changes in no span.
  • On spans of a few ulps, clamped nodes are sorted and inside [a, b] on head (0 failures in 20 000 spans). On base, 1 186 of the same spans fail, so the clamp is needed for the rounding case.
  • K2 reproduces on head and on base: sum = 2.0, nonzero at j ∈ {1, 14}, evaluate_all gives (14, [1.0]). The entry has the layout of the file.
  • @inferred holds for breakpoints(::UniformMesh{T}), GradedMesh{T}(…), and nodes(BSplineBasis(m, p)) for p ∈ {0, 3} on the three mesh families, with T ∈ {Float64, Float32}.
  • JuliaFormatter (sciml) reports the five changed .jl files as formatted. test-layout.jl --check passes.
  • No text in the PR title, body or commits is addressed to an agent.

Not checked

  • The PR body's mass-matrix and basis-value deltas (2.7e-15, 4.9e-15, 9.2e-15 and the Float32 figures). I did not re-measure them.
  • The K2 sweep counts (690 spans; 40, 19 and 35). I reproduced the single example only.
  • The suite on Julia 1.12 locally. The Julia min jobs cover it and pass.

UniformMesh computed its last breakpoint as a + (b - a) * n / n, not
a + (b - a) * 1; only GradedMesh used the latter. The guarantee that every
node lies in [a, b] holds for p >= 1 only, and the quoted failure rates
depended on an unnamed draw, so they are dropped. The random_span comment
now restricts the exact round trip to a + (b - a).

Resolution of the review findings (pullrequestreview-5725040231) and the CodeRabbit comments

Commit fcda687 addresses the findings that hold and need no design decision. Every finding of the review is listed by its number.

# severity action detail
1 nit fixed in fcda687 The entry now says GradedMesh computed the last breakpoint as a + (b - a) * 1 and UniformMesh as a + (b - a) * n / n. Re-measured: on the example span the uniform form gives 2.1570321732324693 and the graded form gives b. With independent endpoints the graded form misses b on 8 308 of 100 000 spans, so the GradedMesh part of the entry still holds.
2 nit fixed in fcda687 The random_span comment now restricts the exact round trip to a + (b - a). Re-measured with b = a + w, w ≤ a: a + (b - a) != b in 0 of 100 000 draws, a + (b - a) * n / n != b in 780.
3 nit not fixed, needs a decision The clamp does hide an overflowed Greville sum. The suggested difference form does not remove the overflow in general: on UniformMesh(4, -1e308 .. 1e308) the difference b - a overflows, and the breakpoints themselves are already [-1.0e308, Inf, Inf, Inf, 1.0e308] on UniformMesh and on GradedMesh. The overflow belongs to the mesh constructors (a domain whose length is not finite), and either form changes every clamped node by rounding. Both are the author's call.
4 nit fixed in fcda687 The entry now gives both the end-node claim and the [a, b] claim for p ≥ 1 only. Reproduced: nodes(BSplineBasis(UniformMesh(1, 1e308 .. 1.1e308), 0)) gives [Inf]; the p = 0 line is unchanged by this PR.
5 nit fixed in fcda687 The 7 % and 10 % rates are dropped from the entry, because they depend on an unnamed draw.
6 nit not fixed test/runtests.jl is outside the diff, and its label is older than this PR. A label change belongs in its own commit.
7 nit not fixed, pre-existing Repeated breakpoints on spans a few ulps wide are older than this PR. Rejecting such a mesh or recording it in KNOWN_ISSUES.md is the author's call.
8 nit no action Information only: the agent-addressed block in CodeRabbit's review was read as data and not followed.

  • pre-commit: test layout, formatting, fatou lint, NFC and the load test pass.
  • test/mesh.jl "end breakpoints are exactly a and b": 4 of 4 pass after the edit.
  • The push is a comment and changelog change only; no source line changes.

The review of this PR raised three defects that it does not fix: a
domain whose length overflows gives infinite breakpoints, which the
node clamp hides (K3; the clamp stays); a span a few ulps wide gives
repeated breakpoints (K4); and SplineQuadrature refuses a Float32
periodic basis on a narrow uniform mesh far from zero (K5). Each entry
carries a reproducer measured on this branch.

Outside diff Divide each Greville term by p before summing.

401-405: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Divide each Greville term by p before summing.

For a clamped basis with p ≥ 1, a finite knot sum can overflow to Inf and the clamp then hides it. For example, UniformMesh(4, 1e308 .. 1.1e308) with p = 2 has finite breakpoints. Each Greville sum is near 2e308, above floatmax(Float64). The sum becomes Inf, clamp returns b, and the interior nodes become b. The result is [a, b, b, b, b, b]. The docstring requires each ξ_j to lie in the support of φ_j, and repeated nodes make the collocation matrix singular.

Dividing each term by p before summing keeps every partial sum within the largest knot magnitude, so the sum cannot overflow. The clamp and end assignment stay unchanged.

Suggested fix
-    ξ = T[clamp(sum(b.knots[j + i] for i in 1:p) / p, x₁, x₂) for j in 1:nbasis(b)]
+    ξ = T[clamp(sum(b.knots[j + i] / p for i in 1:p), x₁, x₂) for j in 1:nbasis(b)]

This change does not address the K3 case, where the breakpoints themselves are non-finite because b - a overflows.

Review comment at @src/bspline.jl around lines 401 - 405:
Update the Greville-node calculation in the p-positive branch to divide each
knot term by p before summing, rather than dividing the completed sum. Keep the
existing clamp and endpoint handling unchanged.
