Gives Mode B one function library whose every function, operator and pattern language means the same thing on SQLite, Postgres, DuckDB, MySQL, ClickHouse, SQL Server, Trino, Snowflake and BigQuery — Postgres's value where databases disagree. Agents can now write the expressions they used to drop into query-time Mode-A SQL (regex, JSON pulls, string/math helpers, text-vs-number comparisons), and the comparison matrix's C9 "Portable expression library" becomes yes.

Stacked on #509 (DEV-2101, the Mode-B grammar); retarget to main once that merges.

What's new

  • Strings and math: left, right, starts_with, ends_with, contains, strpos, lpad, rpad, reverse, repeat, split_part, concat_ws, chr, ascii, div, pi, sin … atan2, cbrt; date_trunc(unit, x) as the granularity call unit(x).
  • Regex: regexp_like / regexp_extract / regexp_replace and ~, ~*, !~, !~*, over one portable pattern subset that is parsed once and re-emitted in each engine's own regex syntax (. crosses newlines, ^/$ are the string's ends, \d \w \s are ASCII). Unsupported constructs (lookaround, backreferences, \b, …) are a plan-time error naming the construct.
  • JSON: json_value(x, path [RETURNING type]), the -> / ->> chains, and the json_extract family of aliases; native JSON columns (jsonb, VARIANT, …) are read natively and ingestion now keeps their db_type.
  • Text beside a number reads as TRY_CAST(text AS DOUBLE) in comparisons, IN, arithmetic and greatest/least; a non-numeric text literal is a plan-time error.
  • One LIKE pattern language everywhere (\ escapes %, _, itself; [ is literal).
{"source_model": "customers", "dimensions": ["name", {"expression": "regexp_extract(email, '@(.+)$', 1)", "name": "domain"}],
 "filters": ["name ~* '^a'", "json_value(payload, '$.plan') = 'pro'", "amount_txt > 100"]}

Behaviour changes

  • greatest / least ignore NULL arguments on SQLite, MySQL, BigQuery, ClickHouse and Trino (they returned NULL).
  • Mode-B LIKE on SQLite is case-sensitive (now GLOB); ILIKE is the case-insensitive form. Model SQL is untouched.
  • SQLite compared numbers-as-text lexicographically and Postgres raised; both now compare numerically.
  • % / mod over non-integers work on Postgres, SQL Server and BigQuery and keep the fraction on SQLite.
  • ClickHouse substr / lower / upper / instr count characters, not bytes.
  • SQL Server: regex needs 2025 and greatest / least 2022 — a server reporting an older version fails at plan time.
  • Fixed along the way: floor(NULL) on SQLite (SQLAlchemy's math.floor UDF), log2 / LOG(b, x) on Postgres, granularity calls in raw-rows filters.

How it's built

Each library function has an explicit lowering through a typed SqlDialect hook per function family; the base holds the portable default and each dialect file overrides only its quirks. A registry-driven matrix (tests/test_dev2120_library_matrix.py) fails for any library function without cases, executes every case on SQLite and DuckDB, and emits it on all nine dialects; the integration suites run the same case table live. Coercion is an ordinary TRY_CAST key inserted by the checker, so it needs no new key kind.

Spec, design and tasks: openspec/changes/dev-2120-portable-expression-library-strings-math-regex-json-coercion/.

Verification so far

Unit suite and the integration suite with CI settings pass locally, including the library on a real Postgres 16. MySQL, ClickHouse, Trino and SQL Server run in this PR's path-gated workflows, Snowflake and BigQuery in their secret-gated suites — those lowerings were written from the engines' documentation and are first exercised live here. C9 stays "yes" only once the Snowflake and BigQuery suites have actually executed.

Linear: DEV-2120

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a portable library of string, math, regex, and JSON functions for filters and formulas, with consistent behavior across supported databases.
    • Added date truncation and JSON value extraction. Text values can be compared or calculated with numbers using numeric coercion.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Saved query-backed models retain declared joins when used in other queries; ordinary query stages remain isolated.
    • Improved BigQuery timestamp handling and corrected behavior when an extension repeats a stored join.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance on portable functions, saved-model joins, and database-specific timestamp behavior.

Move the exact-repeat extension-join dedupe from the query-backed-only planner branch into apply_extension_overlay, keyed on a semantic edge identity (target, name, join type, cardinality, pair set), and mirror it in the schema-drift stage graph. Attach saved joins after the stage-model rename with an explicit key check, route the saved-joins lookup through one bundle helper, and shorten the models-guide addition to one sentence.
Replace design decision 5's saved-relation-only workaround with the one cross-model rule, and add the models/join-traversal delta for it.
DuckDB reports an ETag change across CDN edges as 'this likely means the remote file has changed'; classify it as a transient outage of the named remote host so the notebook skips instead of failing.

Clarify that zero is outside the portable chr domain.

The literal and column rules already implement the required behavior: literal chr(0) is rejected at plan time, and column values below 1 are treated as out of domain and yield NULL. Update the specification to state that chr accepts code points from 1 through 0x10FFFF, excluding surrogates. No production change is required.

+- `chr(n)` — the character with a Unicode code point from `1` through `0x10FFFF`, excluding surrogates; `ascii(s)` — the code point of the first character of `s`.

Assert the hidden filter uses the 90-day trailing window.

assert_scope_closed checks scope closure, and the absence of __regroup__ checks lowering. Neither assertion checks the aggregate value used by the filter. Assert the generated trailing-window producer so a regression to a plain aggregate fails.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

split_part on SQL Server splits on case-different delimiters under a case-insensitive collation.

build_split_part runs REPLACE(<escaped value>, <escaped delimiter>, '","') on unmodified operands. SQL Server REPLACE compares with the operand collation. Under the default case-insensitive collation, split_part('aBc', 'b', 2) splits at B. Postgres compares case-sensitively, and the scalar-function contract requires the Postgres meaning.

The base field_count helper has the same gap. It also calls REPLACE on raw operands. A negative index or an out-of-range check can therefore miscount fields.

Apply binary_text to the REPLACE operands in both places. The existing _TEXT_MATCHES collation tests do not cover split_part, and the split_part cases in tests/_dev2120_fixtures.py all use /. Add a case with a letter delimiter, such as split_part(word, 'D', 1) on 'Ada'.

- escaped = anon("REPLACE", anon("STRING_ESCAPE", value, lit("json")), anon("STRING_ESCAPE", delimiter, lit("json")),
- lit('","'))

+ self.binary_text(anon("STRING_ESCAPE", delimiter, lit("json"))), lit('","'))

In slayer/sql/dialects/base.py, apply the same change to field_count. binary_text is a no-op by default.

- removed = self.char_length(anon("REPLACE", value, delimiter, lit("")))
+ removed = self.char_length(anon("REPLACE", self.binary_text(value), self.binary_text(delimiter), lit("")))

Specify timestamp literal coercion for zoned columns.

queries/time-points already defines general timestamp-literal comparisons. This requirement does not define their interaction with a zoned BigQuery column. Reference that rule and state that the literal is read as UTC, converted to the column type, and leaves the column unconverted. Add a scenario for this case.

- read_column hook: a zoned TIMESTAMP column reads as CAST(col AS DATETIME) at the scope anchor, the
generator's dimension / time-column paths, aggregate sources and join keys, so buckets, windows, the

- BOOLEAN operands of ||, concat and concat_ws fail at plan time naming CASE; concat_ws converts numbers to TEXT

Convert zoned values in the ranked aggregate path.

If first(ts) or last(ts) ranks a physical BigQuery column with db_type="TIMESTAMP", _ranked_value_expr returns _resolve_sql directly. This path bypasses the zoned conversion added for plain aggregates at Line 5780. The picked value can therefore retain the zoned type instead of the required naive DATETIME. Apply read_column to this physical ranked input before it is materialized. (docs.cloud.google.com)

Read zoned derived dimensions as DATETIME.

If a projected derived column has db_type="TIMESTAMP", _derived_column_expr uses its logical type for a cast but never calls read_column. A derived expression such as TIMESTAMP_ADD(ts, INTERVAL 1 HOUR) therefore remains a zoned TIMESTAMP in a regular dimension, while the changed time-dimension path converts it to DATETIME. Apply the declared column’s zoned metadata here so both projection paths return the specified naive value. (docs.cloud.google.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle an empty delimiter before calculating the field count.

If split_part(value, '', -1) reaches field_count, char_length(delimiter) is zero. SQL Server then fails the query instead of treating value as the single field required by the PostgreSQL reference behavior. Return a field count of 1 for an empty delimiter. Use DATALENGTH(delimiter) = 0 to distinguish it from a space delimiter. (learn.microsoft.com)

@coderabbitai Fixed in the latest push, more broadly than suggested. split_part with an empty delimiter now keeps the whole value as its single field on every dialect. A library-level CASE on char_length(delimiter) = 0 returns the value for index ±1 and '' otherwise (NULL stays NULL), because DuckDB, BigQuery and ClickHouse split into characters and MySQL returned ''. field_count (base and SQL Server) also divides by NULLIF(char_length(delimiter), 0). SQL Server's char_length is the sentinel form LEN(CAST(x AS NVARCHAR(MAX)) + 'x') - 1, so a space delimiter still has length 1. Pinned by tests/test_dev2120_scalar_functions.py::TestSplitPartEmptyDelimiter, which covers the empty delimiter, the space delimiter and the no-divide-by-zero emission.

@ZmeiGorynych The broader fix you describe addresses this finding and preserves space delimiters.

I could not verify the latest push in the available checkout. It still shows the unguarded divisor in both field_count implementations, no shared CASE guard, and no TestSplitPartEmptyDelimiter class.

Please retry verification once the latest push is available to the reviewer. This finding remains unverified.
