0.1.8 Beta3: Implement the generic reversible custom/freeform Code Mode codec #279

Closed

Description

@NOirBRight

Parent

#251 (part of #248)

Outcome

Implement the generic reversible custom/freeform codec required by Code Mode when the selected upstream protocol cannot carry the native Codex declaration and lifecycle.

Required behavior

  • Preserve native-compatible custom/freeform items unchanged.
  • For an incompatible protocol, compile one injective request-scoped declaration and inverse-map calls, freeform input, results, streaming, and history.
  • Preserve item/call IDs, ordering, grammar/description bounds, interruption, and replay identity.
  • Codex Client remains the tool executor.

Acceptance criteria

  • Native and adapted protocol fixtures cover declaration, call, input/output, streaming, terminal, and history forms.
  • Collisions, name/size limits, unknown aliases, malformed input, and missing/duplicate IDs fail safely.
  • Gateway never executes the tool, fabricates results, or claims Direct passthrough for an adapted route.
  • No model-name or maintained-Provider branch selects the codec.
  • Exact Provider/model identity remains unchanged and no cross-Provider execution occurs.
  • Diagnostics contain no prompt, tool arguments/results, credentials, IDs, or user content.

Completion receipt (Beta4 preflight audit, 2026-08-10): the accepted Beta3 implementation candidate is 7006542a773fc20c10e4bbcadd593393a259ceb2; it was promoted in v0.1.8-beta.3 and remains in the cumulative v0.1.8-beta.3.3 lineage (d1308ce5bd0546993a68579b23102bafde24513a). GitHub Actions remains disabled; local evidence is authoritative.
The request-scoped reversible custom/freeform implementation and controls are recorded in docs/evidence/issue-251/, with native/adapted CLI workflow evidence in docs/evidence/issue-278/. Fresh candidate-bound evidence validation passed, including unknown alias, malformed envelope, missing/duplicate identity, incomplete stream, and terminal controls. #251 and #281 are closed. Closing this stale child issue as delivered; no Beta4 code work is being added.
