### Direction

Each blocklist feed acts on a specific traffic direction:

- **Inbound**: the feed blocks connections coming from the internet, both those destined to the firewall itself and those routed towards hosts in the local networks. Most security feeds, which list known malicious or compromised addresses, work in this direction.
- **Outbound**: the feed blocks connections originated by the local networks and directed to the internet. This direction is typically used by feeds that prevent local clients from reaching a specific category of remote hosts, rather than protecting the perimeter from external attackers.
- **Inbound and outbound**: the feed is applied in both directions.

Traffic exchanged between local networks is never inspected, regardless of the feed direction: only traffic crossing the firewall towards or from the internet is matched.

### Ports

Some feeds do not apply to every kind of traffic, but only to specific protocols and destination ports, when no restriction is shown, the feed is matched against any traffic.

This is common for feeds that target a single service. For example, a feed listing public DNS resolvers is matched only on TCP and UDP ports 53 and 853, while a feed listing DNS-over-HTTPS servers is matched only on TCP and UDP ports 80 and 443. In both cases a listed address remains reachable on any other port: the purpose is to prevent clients from bypassing the
resolver configured on the firewall, not to block the host entirely.

Keep this in mind when a feed does not seem to produce the expected effect: a listed address that is still reachable may simply be contacted on a port outside the feed scope.

Enterprise blocklists include a \"Confidence\" score which is shown in the UI. Brute force protection relies on the same enforcement chains used by the blocklist feeds, which only inspect traffic crossing the firewall from or towards the internet. Login attempts originated from a local network are detected and the source address is added to the blocklist, but the address is not actually blocked, since no rule inspects traffic sent from a local network to the firewall itself.

The feature can be customized by adjusting the following settings:

- `Ban after N failed accesses`: this setting determines the number of failed login attempts allowed before an IP address is banned. The default value is typically 3, but can be adjusted as needed.
