Added biometric vault unlocking with clearer guidance when biometric access is unavailable.
Added password recovery using device authentication when recovery is set up, with clearer messages for recovery failures and when recovery is unavailable.
Added an option to erase the vault and start over when recovery cannot proceed. Erasing removes on-device vault data; separately stored backups are unaffected.
Bug Fixes
Updating your password now also updates your hint.

Description
Implement crypto-bound biometric login via WrapKeyOpener and CryptoObject
Add invalidation handling, wrap deletion, and login notice banner
Add forgot-password recovery flow using device wrap (wrapped_dek_device)
Support API 30+ CryptoObject and API 29 time-bound unwrapping
Update VaultRepository.rewrapPassword to atomically save password wrap and hint
Introduce VaultResetUseCase and EraseVaultDialog for unrecoverable vaults
Add unit, component, and E2E tests alongside analytics and docs updates
- DeviceSecurityAuthProvider.Authenticate takes an optional CryptoObject and hands the
authorised one back in onSuccess; supportsCryptoObject() drops it for a credential prompt below
API 30 (androidx limitation, next to the #279 authenticator split) so the ViewModel never branches
on the API level. The androidTest fake echoes the bound object (D4 closed: crypto is faked at
KeystoreGateway, the prompt fake fakes only the prompt).
- LoginViewModel: biometric login prepares the KEK_Biometric cipher (decryptCipherFor is the probe),
the screen binds it, BiometricSuccess(cipher) unwraps wrapped_dek_biometric and verifies; an
invalidated key or a post-prompt failure deletes the wrap, logs biometric_key_invalidated and
shows the banner (alias rotation stays with VaultKeyMaintenance). The legacy biometric/reset
bridges are gone.
- Forgot password is a ViewModel-driven step machine (LegacyAuthentication / DeviceAuthentication /
NewPassword): legacy gate unchanged, v2 vaults recover through wrapped_dek_device on API 30+
(CryptoObject) and API 29 (immediate unwrap, one automatic re-prompt), hold the DEK until
VaultRepository.rewrapPassword(newPassword, dek, hint) commits in one transaction, then open the
session. No usable device wrap => recovery-not-set-up card; verifier/keystore failures discard the
device wrap so runAfterUnlock recreates it; storage failure leaves the vault unchanged.
DeviceSecurityRequiredDialog is reachable only from the legacy step (D6, login half).
- VaultResetUseCase + EraseVaultDialog (Erase everything and start over) from the
recovery-not-set-up and legacy-key-lost cards: cancel workers, lock, delete wrap keys + legacy
alias, clearAllTables, reset the biometric counter, navigate to Signup. IS_SIGN_UP_REQUIRED is not
written (Room-first routing; MR 8 deletes it).
- @LightDarkModePreview previews for every new card, banner, dialog and screen state.
- 13 new strings in 26 locales; app/translations.lock updated.
- Docs: design §3.4, §3.7, §6.6, §6.7, §6.11, §8.2, §9.2, §9.3 (MR 6 delivered), D4/D6;
firebase-setup register (reason/exception/source rows); persistence-and-crypto unlock paths;
PROJECT_FACTS.
Analytics:
- New AnalyticsKey events: biometric_key_invalidated, device_key_invalidated,
recovery_not_set_up_show, vault_recovery_success, vault_recovery_failure{reason, exception},
erase_vault_dialog_show / erase_vault_dialog_confirm_click / erase_vault_dialog_cancel_click{source}.
- New AnalyticsSource values: recovery_not_set_up, legacy_key_lost.
- No new AnalyticsParam (reason, exception, source are registered); new reason values
not_authenticated, verifier, keystore, storage.
Tests: LoginViewModelTest (biometric, recovery, erase paths), VaultResetUseCaseTest,
VaultRepositoryImplTest; instrumented LoginScreenTest, EraseVaultDialogTest,
LoginBiometricAndHintE2ETest (fingerprint login through the bound CryptoObject),
SettingsScreenComprehensiveTest, SignupAndLoginE2ETest, HomeScreenNavigationAndTimeoutE2ETest
run on the API 35 emulator. 847 unit tests green, lintRelease clean.
TODO inventory:
- Removes all 5 TODO(MR6) markers.
- Adds none.
…VaultDialog (MR 6 review)
- security/envelope/WrapKeyOpener: the probe/open/verify sequence shared by biometric login and
device-wrap recovery, out of LoginViewModel. WrapKeyProbe (Ready / AwaitingAuthentication /
Invalidated) and WrapOpenOutcome (Opened / NotAuthenticated / WrongDek / KeystoreFailure) carry
a one-line meaning each. LoginViewModel shrinks to the state machine and regions; `outcome`
renamed `recoveryOutcome`; the AwaitingAuthentication -> DeviceAuthentication(cipher = null)
hand-off is commented (API 29 time-bound key: prompt without CryptoObject, init inside the
post-auth window, one re-prompt on UserNotAuthenticatedException).
- LoginScreen.kt keeps the root, the card switch and the screen previews; LoginCardContent and
ForgotPasswordFlow move to ui/login/components as internal composables.
- EraseVaultDialog (+ EraseVaultDialogTest) moves from ui/core/vault to ui/login/components; its
@LightDarkModePreview is dropped because an AlertDialog opens its own window and does not render
in the static preview (same as the repo's other dialogs).
- Comments no longer cite design-doc sections or debt rows in MR 6 files; AGENTS.md gains the
rule.
- Design doc §9.3 MR 6: WrapKeyOpener, the component split, the dialog-preview note, the real
device-test coverage (API 35 emulator, fake prompt provider only).
Analytics: no change (no new events, params or values).
Tests: new WrapKeyOpenerTest (10); LoginViewModelTest wires WrapKeyOpener; unit suite green,
lintRelease clean; instrumented LoginScreenTest and EraseVaultDialogTest (new package) on the
API 35 emulator.
TODO inventory: adds none, removes none.

Walkthrough
This PR adds cipher-bound biometric login and device-auth recovery for envelope vaults, adds a vault erase flow from login recovery states, updates password rewrap to store a new hint in the same transaction, and expands UI, analytics, localization, tests, and project documentation.
Adds WrapKeyOpener with probe/open outcomes, adds optional BiometricPrompt.CryptoObject support in device-auth APIs, and updates test fakes and bridge helpers to pass and inspect bound crypto objects.
Login state and UI flow app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/login/*, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/login/components/*, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/common/Analytics*.kt, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/navigation/AppNavigation.kt, app/src/main/res/values*/strings.xml
Adds login state and actions for biometric ciphers, forgot-password steps, recovery failures, and vault erasure. LoginScreen now uses separate recovery and erase components, shows new recovery banners and cards, and routes to signup after vault erasure. Resource strings and analytics keys cover the new states and dialog events.
Recovery, rewrap, and erase orchestration app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/login/LoginViewModel.kt, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/security/envelope/VaultResetUseCase.kt, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/data/repository/interfaces/VaultRepository.kt, app/src/main/java/com/andryoga/safebox/data/repository/VaultRepositoryImpl.kt
LoginViewModel now probes and opens biometric and device wraps, stores a pending recovered DEK for password reset, handles recovery failure reasons, serializes unlock attempts, and triggers vault erasure. rewrapPassword now also writes the replacement hint in the same transaction. VaultResetUseCase clears workers, session state, aliases, tables, and the biometric-login counter.
Screen, ViewModel, and end-to-end validation app/src/androidTest/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/login/*, app/src/androidTest/java/com/andryoga/safebox/e2e/*, app/src/test/java/com/andryoga/safebox/ui/login/LoginViewModelTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/andryoga/safebox/security/envelope/VaultResetUseCaseTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/andryoga/safebox/data/repository/VaultRepositoryImplTest.kt
Updates tests for cipher-bound biometric success, legacy and envelope forgot-password steps, recovery failure states, erase dialog actions, vault erasure, password-and-hint rewrap, and biometric end-to-end unlock with a bound cipher.
Documentation and project notes .agents/AGENTS.md, .agents/PROJECT_FACTS.md, docs/analytics/firebase-setup.md, docs/architecture/persistence-and-crypto.md, docs/design/envelope-encryption.md
Updates repository guidance and documentation to describe the delivered biometric, recovery, and vault erase flows, the new analytics parameters, the transactional hint rewrap, and current legacy-key facts.
Ni3verma/Safe-Box#305 — This PR builds on the login session and VaultSessionTestBridge groundwork added there, and it adds another session-clear path through VaultResetUseCase.
Ni3verma/Safe-Box#306 — Both PRs reshape LoginUiState, login banners, LoginViewModel, and login tests on the same screen flow.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 73a35
The code changes for biometric login, device recovery and vault erase show no concrete runtime defect in the reviewed evidence. Several design and architecture docs still contradict the delivered behavior or the new three-argument rewrapPassword contract. Correct them to avoid misleading future maintainers; this is not a merge blocker.

createVault normalizes a blank hint with hint.trim().ifEmpty { null } before storing it in user_details (verified by VaultRepositoryImplTest), whereas rewrapPassword passes hint directly to userDetailsDao.updateHint(hint, Date()). If a user enters a whitespace-only hint during password reset, rewrapPassword persists the whitespace string instead of null. Normalize hint in rewrapPassword the same way as createVault.

Section 6.6 states: "then decryptCipherFor(BIOMETRIC) on dispatchers.default — the Cipher.initis the §2.2 probe, so there is no separate probe() call", and section 6.7 states: "The probe is decryptCipherFor(DEVICE) itself, on dispatchers.default". However, the implementation in LoginViewModel.kt ( and §6.6 line 703 / §9.3 line 1247) calls wrapKeyOpener.probe(...) rather than calling envelopeEncryptionManager.decryptCipherFor(...) directly from the ViewModel.
**As delivered (MR 6, 2026-10-25).** The pre-conditions are checked by `LoginViewModel.onBiometricAvailable` in this order: `crypto_version = 2`, `wrapped_dek_biometric` present and `biometric_unlock_disabled` absent, `ALLOWED_BIOMETRIC_LOGIN_COUNT_REMAINING > 0`, then `decryptCipherFor(BIOMETRIC)` on `dispatchers.default` — the `Cipher.init` *is* the §2.2 probe, so there is no separate `probe()` call; a `KeyPermanentlyInvalidatedException`, or any other failure (§6.10 maps them all to *invalidated*), takes the banner path. The cipher is held in `LoginUiState.biometricUnlockCipher`; the screen binds it as the `CryptoObject` and reports `BiometricSuccess(authorisedCipher)`. A success that arrives without a cipher unlocks nothing (`crashInDebugBuild`). The unwrap and `verify()` run on `dispatchers.default`; a failure of either *after* a successful prompt is treated as an invalidation (§2.2), exactly like the init-time exception. **The invalidated path deletes the wrap row only** (`VaultRepository.deleteWrap(BIOMETRIC)`, `BIOMETRIC_KEY_INVALIDATED`): the stuck or invalidated Keystore alias is rotated by `VaultKeyMaintenance.ensureWrap` at the password login that follows (§3.5, D13), so the alias lifecycle has one owner — the diagram's "delete wrap + alias" is realised across the two steps. Biometric logins enqueue no auto-backup (the master password is not in hand); every unlock path is serialised by one in-flight guard, so a fingerprint success landing after a password login is dropped.
### 6.7 Forgot Password (Login Screen) — Recovery Through `wrapped_dek_device`
Login-screen state when the button is tapped:
| Condition | UI ||---|---||`crypto_version = 1`| today's legacy reset (§6.4.1) ||`wrapped_dek_device` present and `probe(KEK_Device) ≠ Invalidated`| recovery flow below || otherwise |**Recovery-not-set-up** state (§7.1): explanation, link to restore from a manual backup, **Erase everything and start over**. `DeviceSecurityRequiredDialog` is **never** shown here — setting a lock screen now cannot create a wrap. |```mermaidsequenceDiagram autonumber actor U as User participant VM as LoginViewModel participant Env as EnvelopeEncryptionManager participant BP as BiometricPrompt participant KS as AndroidKeyStore participant DB as vault_meta U->>VM: Forgot password? Cancelling the dialog zeroes the held DEK and returns to the login screen. The "password after X biometric logins" counter never blocks this path. Security floor: whoever knows the device PIN can reset the master password — **exactly today's floor**.
**As delivered (MR 6, 2026-10-25).** The routing table above is `LoginViewModel.onForgotPasswordClicked`, and the flow is a step machine in `LoginUiState.forgotPasswordStep` (`LegacyAuthentication` → the §6.4.1 gate, the only place `DeviceSecurityRequiredDialog` is still reachable; `DeviceAuthentication(cipher?)` → the device prompt; `NewPassword` → `UpdatePasswordDialog`), so the screen renders exactly one prompt or dialog and a rotation resumes the same step. Details that the diagram leaves open:
-**The probe is `decryptCipherFor(DEVICE)` itself**, on `dispatchers.default`: a cipher back ⇒ `DeviceAuthentication(cipher)` (API 30+; on API 29 inside `T` the cipher is discarded by the provider, §3.7); `UserNotAuthenticatedException` ⇒ healthy time-bound key, `DeviceAuthentication(null)`; `KeyPermanentlyInvalidatedException` or any other failure ⇒ `DEVICE_KEY_INVALIDATED`, the device wrap is deleted and the **recovery-not-set-up** state is shown (`RECOVERY_NOT_SET_UP_SHOW`). The state replaces the login card with an explanation, the backup route as body copy ("erase, sign up again, restore from Backup & Restore" — restore needs an open vault, so there is nothing to link to while locked), *Erase everything and start over* and *Back to login*.
-**API 29 re-prompt, once.** A `UserNotAuthenticatedException` at the immediate unwrap opens one more prompt (a new `DeviceAuthentication(null)` instance — deliberately identity-equal so the StateFlow does not de-duplicate it); a second miss ends in `VAULT_RECOVERY_FAILURE{reason = not_authenticated}` with the wrap kept.
-**Two failures discard the device wrap, none touches the password wrap.** A verifier mismatch (`reason = verifier`) proves the wrap does not hold this vault's DEK, and a `doFinal` failure after a successful prompt (`reason = keystore`, plus `DEVICE_KEY_INVALIDATED`) is an invalidation by §2.2; in both cases the wrap row is deleted so that `runAfterUnlock` (§6.5) recreates a good one at the next password login — left in place, `ensureWrap` would see "wrap present, key healthy" and keep the broken wrap forever. "Nothing written" in the diagram means `wrapped_dek_password`, which no failure path writes. A fourth reason, `storage`, covers a `rewrapPassword` that fails to commit: the DEK is zeroed, the vault is exactly as before, and the banner says so.
-**The tail is `VaultRepository.rewrapPassword(newPassword, dek, hint)`** — one transaction for `kdf_params`, `wrapped_dek_password` and the plaintext hint — then `setSessionKey`, `runAfterUnlock`, `VAULT_RECOVERY_SUCCESS` and `LOGIN_SUCCESS{login_method = password_reset}`. No auto-backup is enqueued (unchanged from the pre-envelope reset).

… a device check
No physical Android 10 device is available anywhere (none owned; Firebase Test Lab and
Device Streaming offer only virtual API 29), so the two emulator observations are recorded as
the shipped behaviour and §8.2's forgot-password-by-OS-version trigger decides between
dropping API 29 recovery and the keyguard-intent fallback.

feat/envelope-mr6
feat(security): implement crypto-bound biometric login, device-wrap recovery, and vault erase (MR 6)
Oct 31, 2026
… delivered MR 6
Addresses the CodeRabbit / PR-agent findings on #312:
- trailing comma in LoginBiometricAndHintE2ETest
- PROJECT_FACTS: evidence on the MR 4 / MR 6 facts; 'every unlock' qualified to envelope
unlocks on the login screen (Continue for now opens setLegacySession; signup and the
migrator also set the key), mirrored in persistence-and-crypto.md
- design §6.8 uses rewrapPassword(newPassword, dek, hint); §6.6 precondition names
WrapKeyOpener.probe(BIOMETRIC) = Ready as the single health probe; §6.11 flowchart shows
the delivered S5/S6 (biometric counter only; LoginScreenRoot -> SignupRoute)
…e navigation in the E2E check
HomeScreenNavigationAndTimeoutE2ETest.awayTimeout_whileOnRecords_... has failed in every full
CI run since MR 5's f1ef6ea (last green: db719f9) while passing locally alone, in the e2e
package and in the full 292-test suite on the same GMD image, so the cause is CI-specific and
CI uploads no logcat.
- ActiveSessionManager no longer caches the timeout from an init-time collector; startLogoutTimer
reads awayTimeoutSecFlow.first() when onStop arrives. The value the user just saved applies,
and there is no collector delivery for a zero-timeout test to race. New unit test
onStop_shouldArmTheTimeoutSavedAfterConstruction.
- The E2E test asserts the session key is cleared (VaultSessionTestBridge.isVaultUnlocked, 10 s)
before waiting for the login title, so the next failure names the half that broke.
- ci.yml / release.yml upload the per-test GMD logcat files with the test report.
Analytics: no change.
…AMS KDoc
Addresses the two CodeRabbit findings on #303 that still apply after MR 6:
- ActiveSessionManager.lockOpenSession starts the worker-state read, records the reason and
clears the session key at once, then awaits the read for SESSION_TIMEOUT{worker_running}.
The snapshot still sees a running worker (it fails closed at its next use of the key) but the
lock no longer waits up to 500 ms on WorkManager. ActiveSessionManagerTest updated; docs that
described the read as "just before the clear" say so.
- VaultMetaKey.KDF_PARAMS documents the KdfParams.encode wire string (pipe-delimited), not JSON.
The third finding (biometric / reset through openLegacySession for an envelope vault) is the MR 5
state; MR 6 replaced those paths (WrapKeyOpener + rewrapPassword) and is superseded.
Analytics: no change (same event, same param, same meaning).
Manual pass on real emulators (API 30 and API 29 google_apis, real BiometricPrompt + Keystore) — results and the two API 29 image observations are in design §9.3 MR 6 (2c7a3b3, 3d560d2). Commits after the first review: 73a354c review fixes, ed68ad6 away-timeout race (first green full CI run since MR 5), 354ebeb the two #303 CodeRabbit findings that still applied.
…rough LoadingRoute
CI logcat (now uploaded) for the away-timeout E2E failure: the lock fires within 2 ms, then
LoadingScreenRoot logs "proceed to login" twice and two LoginScreens are composed 20 ms apart,
after which no destination is on screen for the remaining 25 s. The gate's navigateRoot(LoginGraph)
lands on LoadingRoute, whose LaunchedEffect issues a second popUpTo(0) navigation to LoginRoute
while the first transition is still running; on the slower CI image that interrupts the NavHost
transition, Home is recomposed, its gate fires again and the cascade ends blank. The green runs
merely sequenced the two navigations far enough apart.
A vault exists whenever Home was reached, so the Loading decision is already known: the gate now
navigates to LoginRoute directly — one root navigation. e2e package 61/61 on the local GMD.
Design doc §3.6 / §6.9 / J5 updated.

…mmas in the biometric E2E test
PR-agent round 3 on #312. The third finding (normalise a blank hint in rewrapPassword) does not
apply: UpdatePasswordDialog gates Save on hint.isNotBlank() and UserDetailsDao.updateHint takes a
non-null String, so a blank hint cannot reach the repository.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Suggestion: Normalize blank hints to null before calling userDetailsDao.updateHint so rewrapPassword matches the blank-hint handling in createVault (hint.ifBlank { null }). Otherwise, clearing the hint during password recovery stores an empty/whitespace string instead of null. [general, importance: 6]
- WrapKeyOpener: flagIfOutsideCryptoApi renamed crashInDebugBuildIfOutsideCryptoApi, which is
what it does.
- DeviceSecurityAuthProvider.Authenticate and DeviceSecurityAuthHandler take the required
callbacks first (onSuccess, onErrorOrCancel) and the defaulted prompt options after them; the
previous order interleaved defaults around the required onSuccess. Call sites are named, so
none changed. FakeDeviceSecurityAuthProvider follows.
- LoginUiState.kt: the state class first, the supporting types after it.
Kept as is, with the reasoning in the review thread: SESSION_TIMEOUT{worker_running} (the §8.2
read-back still depends on it), no preview for ForgotPasswordFlow (prompt and dialog windows do
not render in a preview), BiometricSuccess(cipher = null) (already asserted as a contract
violation and degraded to the prompt-error path).
Analytics: no change.
…orkManager read behind it
Owner decision on MR 6 review: fail-closed on lock is the design whatever the answer to "did the
timeout hit a running backup?", so the param decided nothing. ActiveSessionManager loses its
Lazy<WorkManager>, the 500 ms bounded read and the async/NonCancellable plumbing; the lock is
record reason -> clear key -> log SESSION_TIMEOUT. AnalyticsParam.WORKER_RUNNING removed (no
other sender). ActiveSessionManagerTest: five worker-state tests removed, event assertion kept.
Analytics: SESSION_TIMEOUT no longer carries worker_running. The GA custom dimension
`worker_running` (registered with MR T) receives nothing from this build on and can be archived;
firebase-setup.md register and envelope-readiness.md (question row, recipe 7) updated.
Analytics: no new param.
