Metaparameters enable simultaneous switching on (or off) of groups of parameters associated with a single hypothesis. For example, the hypothesis that a Michaelis-Menten kinetic should exist in the model can be concisely specified with a metaparameter that groups the Vmax and Km parameters.
Hence, a metaparameter appears like a single local step for the
forwardandbackwardmethods, but the correct number of estimated parameters is used in the criterion calculation regardless.
