Summary

  • Windows Update "Security" mode now matches the intended behavior. Security updates are not deferred, but Windows only notifies (AUOptions 2): the user downloads, installs and restarts, with no automatic restart while signed in. Drivers stay excluded and feature updates are deferred 365 days. Every preset clears the policies that hide update notifications, and they are included in the backup.
  • Windows Home: after Security is applied, a warning dialog (6 languages) explains what the edition ignores (the feature-update deferral) and what is set but not guaranteed.
  • Preset fixes: update tasks that Windows ships disabled (such as WakeUpAndScanForUpdates) are no longer re-enabled. A clean install is detected as Default instead of Custom.
  • Hardening:
    • elevated output goes through a private named pipe instead of %TEMP% files;
    • system folder variables and PSModulePath are reset in scripts;
    • a running service is stopped before it is deleted;
    • elevated startup scans run by another admin map HKCU to the right user.
  • Fixes:
    • a dialog crash when its button was pressed as the dialog closed (from crash.log);
    • 534 translation fixes, plus a test that catches untranslated text;
    • USB devices in D3 are no longer woken by the Connections scan;
    • the Interrupt/Affinity tabs reuse the cached scan.
  • README: the gallery is refreshed, with new Startup and Drivers screenshots and personal data pixelated. Added a "New in 1.6.1" section.

Testing

  • dotnet test: 396/396. Release build: 0 warnings.
  • Hyper-V VM (Windows 11 Pro): clean install detected as Default. Applying Security writes AUOptions=2, NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers=1, ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate=1 and a 365-day feature deferral, and clears the notification policies. The WakeUp* tasks stay disabled, the preset is detected as Security, and switching back to Default is detected as Default. Original state restored afterwards.
  • Not tested on a real Windows Home machine. The Home dialog was checked by rendering it.
