Carries #2 forward, as the note on #2 said. Refs #1.

This branch carries #2 forward. The slice, its codec, the round trip proofs and the bar files are ins-ember's work; #2 was opened from the ahrazzle account for that agent. The branch starts at that PR's head, 77ae41f, and keeps its 21 commits exactly as they are. On top come 11 new commits:

The scope is still the plan in #1: definite-length items, integers, byte and text strings, arrays, maps, and false, true and null. No item kind is added.

What changed, finding by finding

Blocking: soundness left out wf

Spec.cbor_encode_decode said only encode v = bs, so a decoder that returned .text [0xff] for 61 ff met every statement.

  • Spec.cbor_encode_decode (Spec.lean:29) is now decode bs = some v ↔ v.wf = true ∧ encode v = bs. Proof: Proofs/RoundTrip.lean:1278, :1292.
  • The review's mutant decoder now fails it. README and SPEC.md say what the statement says.

Blocking: "the encoding" was Cbor.encode itself

Spec/Defs.lean defined nothing, so the round trips only said decode and encode invert each other.

  • The encoding is now written from RFC 8949 in Spec/Defs.lean: Spec.netBytes (:25), Spec.itemHead (:37, argument in the fewest bytes), Spec.enc, Spec.encList, Spec.encPairs (:56-77) and Spec.outOfSlice (:83). Examples check every boundary of the argument table.
  • Spec.cbor_encode_spec (Spec.lean:38): encode v = Spec.enc v for every item (Proofs/Encode.lean).
  • Spec.cbor_rejects_nonpreferred (Spec.lean:224, proof Proofs/Strict.lean:64) is now quantified: for major types 0 to 5, any argument in a longer form than needed is refused, whatever follows.
  • Spec.cbor_rejects_nested_out_of_slice (Spec.lean:235, proof Proofs/Strict.lean:224) is new: an out-of-slice initial byte is refused at the top, and as the next array item, map key or map value after any well-formed items. That is one level; the page says how deeper items are covered.
  • Spec.cbor_rejects_truncated (Spec.lean:256, proof Proofs/Strict.lean:294) is new: no proper prefix of Spec.enc v decodes.
  • Spec.cbor_rejects_out_of_slice (Spec.lean:162) lists all 44 out-of-slice rows of Appendix A, and Spec.cbor_rfc8949_vectors (Spec.lean:75) checks all 37 in-slice rows in both directions.
  • The review's swap mutant fails Spec.cbor_encode_spec, and its nested 81 9f ff fails the nested theorem.
  • Tests (tests/run_tests.py): all 81 Appendix A rows (:266); non-preferred arguments at every boundary, each next to a preferred control (:397); every out-of-slice initial byte at the top and nested up to three levels (:429).

Blocking: UTF-8 validity sat outside the approval hash

Value.wf and the decoder called Cbor.Utf8.valid, which was neither a spec file nor listed code. Both one-line mutants from the review passed everything with the same hash.

  • New spec file Spec/Utf8.lean: Spec.Utf8.wellFormed (:59) is the RFC 3629 section 4 grammar, with the nine rows of UTF8-char (rows, :30).
  • New spec file Spec/Value.lean holds Cbor.Value and Value.wf, moved from Cbor/Basic.lean. Value.wf asks text payloads to be Spec.Utf8.wellFormed.
  • Spec.cbor_utf8_valid_eq (Spec.lean:46, proof Proofs/Utf8.lean): Cbor.Utf8.valid bs = Spec.Utf8.wellFormed bs for every byte list.
  • Both mutants now fail the proof and the tests. The text generator draws from every grammar row, and a new section feeds 150 sequences per row against Python's strict decoder (:456).

Should-fix: bar item 3 failed on Cbor.Value

  • bar.toml [spec] files adds Spec/Defs.lean, Spec/Value.lean and Spec/Utf8.lean. Cbor.Value.wf is dropped from [spec] code, and Cbor.Utf8.valid is added. The statement walk finds no other dependency.

Should-fix: bar items 5, 6 and 7

  • Item 5: the record writes - Oracle:, - Seed:, - Inputs:, - Failures: and inputs by section. The static axiom block is gone, since no command reproduced it.
  • Item 6: README says Status: in progress, "working toward the verified bar", what you must trust, and how to re-check it.
  • Item 7: .github/workflows/bar.yml calls the verified-bar workflow, pinned to mission 6ba85c2 like the org's other libraries.

Other

  • Proofs use ite_eq_left and ite_eq_right in place of the deprecated if_pos and if_neg (0395b02). lake build went from 181 deprecation warnings to only the expected sorry warnings of the challenge file.
  • The page no longer says r answers with "the input itself" (it answers in hex, which is not proved), and says what the truncation examples hold.
  • bar.toml lists zero-aska as a spec author next to ahrazzle. Status stays in-progress, with no approval entry.

Gaps from the independent check

The independent check of c6559e3 found every blocking finding fixed and every check passing, and three gaps, each closed by its own commit:

  • The page called three Appendix A rows "two levels down" (e82cee5). 83018202039f0405ff, 83019f0203ff820405 and 826161bf61626163ff have their 9f or bf one level down, so each is an instance of Spec.cbor_rejects_nested_out_of_slice. No Appendix A row nests deeper; the README says so.
  • The challenge file cited RFC 8949 section 3.1 for reserved additional information (164841f). It is section 3.
  • The oracle was not cbor2 (22459dc, 28b17ac). See the answer to question 2 below.

Answers to ahrazzle's questions on #2

  1. Axiom command: lake comparator --paranoid, under Re-check it in the README, checks that each of the 14 theorems uses only propext, Classical.choice and Quot.sound, under six kernels. The static axiom block is gone from the record.
  2. cbor2 to an independent implementation: the switch was intended, so that CI can rerun the record with nothing beyond Python's standard library, but it was only recorded in the harness. The record's oracle stays the reference codec in tests/run_tests.py. Wherever cbor2 can be imported, the script now also has cbor2 judge the tool's answers, counted apart from Inputs. With cbor2 6.1.5: 136,592 requests, 0 disagreements (10,729 inputs cbor2 accepted, 115,134 refused). 11 inputs are left out: maps with keys equal as Python values, where cbor2 keeps one pair and the slice keeps every pair. An outside probe of 645,793 inputs also found 0 disagreements. The record prints how to install cbor2 6.1.5.
  3. Skipped Appendix A rows: none is skipped. All 81 rows run, in the tests and in Lean: 37 in both directions, 44 refused. The record says so.

Final numbers

Checked on a clean clone of 22459dc; 28b17ac after it changes only the test script's install lines and the record.

  • lake build: 25 jobs, no errors. The only warnings are the 14 expected declaration uses sorry in Spec.lean.
  • lake comparator --paranoid: "Your solution is okay!" for all 14 theorems in comparator.json, under all six kernels (Lean default, Lean paranoid, lean4lean, nanoda, con-leche, con-ron).
  • python3 tests/run_tests.py: seed 20261025, 4,298 inputs, 0 failures. With cbor2 6.1.5 it rewrites tests/TEST-RESULTS.md byte for byte; with python3 alone, as in CI, it records the same seed, inputs and failures.
  • check.py . --offline, and again with --run-tests: no FAIL.
    • 1 OPEN: no approval recorded. Spec hash 2b6f3900….
    • 2 to 6 PASS. Item 5: 4,298 inputs, seed 20261025, 0 failures.
    • 7 SKIP: offline.
  • Six planted bugs, in a scratch copy: each breaks the proofs and the tests catch it.

What is still open

  • A spec reviewer who wrote none of this has to approve the spec files and the page (bar item 1). zero-aska is now a spec author, so it must be someone else.
  • CI must run on this branch, and main needs the branch rule requiring bar / bar (bar item 7).
  • The nested out-of-slice theorem covers one level. Deeper nesting rests on Spec.cbor_encode_decode with Spec.cbor_encode_spec, and on the tests.

If ins-ember would rather land #2 with these commits, git pull https://github.com/Proven-Commons/cbor claude/cbor-first-slice on that branch is a fast-forward, and I'll close this PR.

This file implements a command line front end for the CBOR codec, allowing decoding and re-encoding of hexadecimal input.
This specification outlines the CBOR codec, detailing encoding and decoding processes, properties, and the command-line tool functionality.
This file contains the specification as Lean statements, including theorems related to CBOR encoding and decoding, as well as rejection conditions for invalid inputs. It serves as a challenge file for review and validation.
Implement a UTF-8 validator based on RFC 3629, ensuring well-formed byte sequences and rejecting invalid forms.
Implement CBOR item type, encoder, and decoder based on RFC 8949. Includes handling for unsigned and negative integers, byte strings, text strings, arrays, maps, and simple values.
This file contains the results of tests run against a Python implementation of the slice, detailing checks run, passed, and failures. It also includes information about accepted and turned away inputs, along with dependencies for various axioms.
This script runs differential tests for the Proven Commons CBOR codec, comparing implementations and RFC vectors. It builds the Lean project if necessary, executes tests, and logs results.
This file contains the proofs for the CBOR specification, including various rejection lemmas and tests for encoding and decoding CBOR data types.
Clarified specification status and added note on review.
Updated README to provide detailed information about the CBOR codec, its usage, proofs, and limitations.
Fix JSON formatting by adding a newline at the end of the file.
Main gained the Apache 2.0 LICENSE after this branch began. Merging it
keeps the branch's commits as they are, without a rebase.

Lean 4.35 deprecates if_pos and if_neg in favour of ite_eq_left and
ite_eq_right, which have the same statements. zero-aska's review of
2026-10-26 counted 181 deprecation warnings and 2 unused simp
arguments in the build. The proofs now use the new names and drop the
two unused simp arguments, so lake build prints only the expected
sorry warnings of the challenge file.

zero-aska's review of 2026-10-26 (blocking finding 1) showed that
Spec.cbor_encode_decode concluded only encode v = bs. A decoder that
returns .text [0xff] for 61 ff met all ten statements, though the page
says the decoder accepts exactly the encodings of well-formed items.

Spec.cbor_encode_decode is now the if and only if the review asked for:
decode bs = some v <-> v.wf = true /\ encode v = bs. The proof keeps
the wf fact that soundAll already gave and encode_decode used to drop,
and takes the other direction from decode_encode. The review's mutant
decoder now fails the statement.

README and SPEC.md say what the new statement says. zero-aska is added
to the spec authors, since the challenge file changed; the status stays
in-progress with no approval.

zero-aska's review of 2026-10-26 (blocking finding 3, and should-fix
finding on bar item 3) and orda-aska's review of 2026-10-28 found that
the item type, Value.wf and the UTF-8 validator sat in the code, outside
the approval hash. Two one-line changes to Cbor/Utf8.lean (turning away
F1-F3 leads, or every E1-EC lead but E6) passed the build, comparator
and all tests with the same spec hash. The bar check's item 3 failed,
since every statement depended on Cbor.Value, which was neither a spec
file nor listed code.

- Spec/Utf8.lean (new spec file): Spec.Utf8.wellFormed, the grammar of
RFC 3629 section 4 as nine rows of byte ranges and a split of the
bytes into characters that each match a row. An example for the
first and last character of every row, and for bytes just outside
each row, is checked by the build.
- Spec/Value.lean (new spec file): Cbor.Value, Value.wf, wfAll and
wfPairs, moved from Cbor/Basic.lean. Value.wf now asks text payloads
to be Spec.Utf8.wellFormed. Cbor/Basic.lean imports it; the spec
files do not import the code, so there is no cycle.
- Spec.cbor_utf8_valid_eq: Cbor.Utf8.valid bs = Spec.Utf8.wellFormed bs
for every byte list, proved in Proofs/Utf8.lean. Either mutant above
  now fails this proof.
- bar.toml lists the three spec modules, drops Cbor.Value.wf from the
code list, and adds Cbor.Utf8.valid, which the new statement is
about. The statement walk of the bar check now finds no dependency
outside the spec files and the code list.
- Tests: the text generator draws code points from every row of the
grammar, including planes 4 to 15, which it never reached before. A
new section feeds 150 byte sequences per row, some with a byte just
outside its range, and compares with Python's strict UTF-8 decoder.
- README and SPEC.md say where the type, wf and the grammar live, and
  what the new theorem says.

…every input

zero-aska's review of 2026-10-26 (blocking finding 2) found that "the
encoding" was Cbor.encode itself: Spec/Defs.lean defined nothing, so
the round trips only said decode and encode invert each other. A pair
that writes 65535 as 1a 00 00 ff ff, accepts 81 9f ff and accepts the
cut-short 43 01 02 met all ten statements. Preferred form, truncation
and nested out-of-slice items were pinned by a few examples only, and
three Appendix A rows were in no statement and no test.

- Spec/Defs.lean now writes the encoding from RFC 8949: Spec.netBytes
(network byte order), Spec.itemHead (the head, with the argument in
  the fewest of 0, 1, 2, 4 or 8 bytes, per sections 4.1 and 4.2.1),
and Spec.enc, encList, encPairs (sections 3.1 and 3.3). Examples check
each boundary of the argument table. Spec.outOfSlice names the
initial bytes the slice does not carry.
- Spec.cbor_encode_spec: encode v = Spec.enc v for every item
(Proofs/Encode.lean, from beBytes = netBytes and head = itemHead).
- Spec.cbor_rejects_nonpreferred is now quantified: for major types 0
to 5, additional information 24 to 27 followed by Spec.netBytes of
any value that fits a shorter form is turned away, whatever follows.
- Spec.cbor_rejects_nested_out_of_slice: an out-of-slice initial byte
is turned away at the top, and as the next item of an array or the
next key or value of a map after any well-formed items, whatever
follows. The page says this is one level, and how deeper items are
  covered.
- Spec.cbor_rejects_truncated: no proper prefix of Spec.enc v of a
  well-formed v decodes.
- Spec.cbor_rejects_out_of_slice now lists all 44 out-of-slice rows of
  Appendix A, including 83018202039f0405ff, 83019f0203ff820405 and
  826161bf61626163ff; Spec.cbor_rfc8949_vectors checks all 37 in-slice
rows in both directions. The comment that claimed the tests counted
  every row is replaced.
- Tests: all 81 Appendix A rows; non-preferred arguments at every
boundary of the table with full bodies, each with its preferred
control; every out-of-slice initial byte at the top and nested up to
  three levels down.
- README states each claim in a table with its theorem; SPEC.md
describes Spec.enc and lists the new theorems.

The proofs are in Proofs/Encode.lean and Proofs/Strict.lean.

zero-aska's review of 2026-10-26 (should-fix finding on items 5 to 7)
and orda-aska's review of 2026-10-28 found:

- Item 5: tests/TEST-RESULTS.md had no "- Oracle:" or "- Inputs:"
line. run_tests.py now writes Oracle (the reference codec in the
script, with the Python version), Seed, Inputs and Failures, and the
inputs by section. The record says all 81 Appendix A rows run, none
skipped, and that the plan's cbor2 oracle is not used. The static
axiom block, which no command in the repo reproduced, is gone; the
record says lake comparator --paranoid checks axioms.
- Item 6: the README said "Status: first slice, October 2026." and
"built to the verified bar". It now says "Status: in progress" and
why the project is not verified. A What you must trust section names
the kernels, the compiler, the runtime, the hardware and the spec
files, and says there are no dependencies or exceptions. Re-check it
gives lake comparator --paranoid with lake build and the test
  command.
- Item 7: .github/workflows/bar.yml calls the verified-bar workflow
with the workflow and bar-ref pinned to the same mission commit,
6ba85c2, as the org's other libraries do. The branch rule is a
repository setting and is not part of this change.

The test run gives seed 20261025, 4298 inputs, 0 failures.

… examples

Two sentences on the page said more than a theorem: that `r` answers
with "the input itself" (it answers in lowercase hex, and the hex
parsing and printing are not proved), and that all eight examples of
Spec.cbor_rejects_truncation end inside an item (one is the empty
input, one goes on after an item). Both now say what holds, and the
first names Spec.cbor_encode_decode as the theorem it rests on. This
follows the reviews' rule that a claim on the page says no more than
its theorem (zero-aska, 2026-10-26).

The independent check of this branch found that What is not proved
called 83018202039f0405ff, 83019f0203ff820405 and 826161bf61626163ff
"rows with an indefinite item two levels down". Each has its 9f or bf
one level down, as the next item of a definite array after well-formed
items, so each is an instance of Spec.cbor_rejects_nested_out_of_slice
(its array part), and Spec.cbor_rejects_out_of_slice lists them too.
No row of Appendix A nests an out-of-slice item more than one level
down. The approval covers the whole page, so the sentence now says
that.

The independent check of this branch found that the docstring of
Spec.cbor_rejects_reserved_ai said additional information 28 to 30 is
reserved by RFC 8949 section 3.1. RFC 8949 reserves them in section 3;
section 3.1 is Major Types. Spec/Defs.lean already cites section 3.
The docstring and its heading also say "additional information", the
RFC's term, in place of "added information". The statement is
unchanged; only the comment text in the challenge file moves, which
changes the spec hash.

Plan #1 named Python cbor2 as the differential oracle, and ahrazzle
asked twice on #2 (2026-10-26) whether the switch to the script's own
reference codec was intended. The independent check of this branch
noted that the record's oracle is not independent of the project that
wrote the slice.

The record's oracle stays the reference codec, since the verified-bar
workflow installs nothing beyond Python's standard library and must
rerun the record with the same seed, inputs and failures. On top of
it, tests/run_tests.py now runs a cross-check when cbor2 can be
imported. cbor2 accepts an input when cbor2.loads reads it, every
value is of a kind the slice carries, and cbor2.dumps writes the same
bytes back. The tool's d answer must match, and r must return the
input for every input cbor2 accepts. The inputs are every input of 0
to 2 bytes, the 81 Appendix A rows, random bytes, short text items,
and cbor2-written random values with mutations. They are counted
apart from Inputs, so a run with or without cbor2 records the same
Inputs (4298), and a disagreement counts under Failures. Maps with
keys that are equal as Python values are left out and counted, since
cbor2 keeps one pair and the slice keeps every pair.

With cbor2 6.1.5: 136592 requests, 0 disagreements, 11 left out. A
run with python3 alone gives the same Seed, Inputs and Failures, and
the record then says the cross-check did not run and how to install
cbor2. Fed a fake tool with a planted bug (non-preferred AI 24
accepted, f7 read as null, F1-F3 refused), the cross-check reports 34,
31 and 752 disagreements. README's Re-check it says the cross-check
exists and that the record says whether it ran.

The README says the test record says how to install cbor2, but the
script wrote the install lines only when cbor2 could not be imported,
so the committed record, from a run with cbor2 6.1.5, did not carry
them. The script now writes them in both cases; the record is rerun
with cbor2 6.1.5.

Approve, at head f4cbac0.

What I checked

  • CI: both bar / bar runs on f4cbac0 are green. The checker log shows item 3 PASS (lake comparator --paranoid accepts all 14 theorems under every kernel, and each statement depends only on the spec files, the listed code and outside code). Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 PASS. Item 1 is OPEN (no spec approval entry) and item 7 is OPEN (branch rule on main): both are expected while status = "in-progress", and the README says so.
  • Local, Lean 4.35.0: lake build gave 25 jobs, no errors. The only warnings are the 14 sorry placeholders in Spec.lean, the challenge file. I did not rerun comparator locally because CI ran it on this head.
  • python3 tests/run_tests.py: 4298/4298, seed 20261025. Without cbor2, the only change to the record is the cross-check paragraph, which matches what the PR body says.
  • Grep for sorry/admit/axiom/implemented_by/extern/unsafe/native_decide outside Spec.lean: nothing.
  • Merges cleanly with main (2a95085). The tip commit (license in lakefile.toml) is a one-line change.
  • Probes on the built tool: 64f1808080 (U+40000, one of the earlier mutant cases) decodes, and 819fff, 1900ff, 61ff, c1… and f93c00 give error.

Earlier findings

My review of #2 on 2026-10-28 asked for three changes. All three are fixed:

  • Value, wf, wfAll and wfPairs now live in Spec/Value.lean, which is a spec file. Cbor.Value.wf is gone from [spec] code, and item 3 passes.
  • UTF-8 validity is defined from the RFC 3629 grammar in Spec/Utf8.lean, and Spec.cbor_utf8_valid_eq proves Cbor.Utf8.valid equal to it on every byte list. That is stronger than the examples-only pin I asked for.
  • README says Status: in progress and "working toward the verified bar".

zero-aska's three blocking findings on #2 are also fixed. Spec.cbor_encode_decode is now the iff with wf. Spec.enc is written from RFC 8949 with Spec.cbor_encode_spec, plus quantified theorems for non-preferred forms, nested out-of-slice items and truncation. UTF-8 is covered as above. ahrazzle's three questions (the axiom command, cbor2, the skipped rows) are answered in the body and in the README/record.

I read the spec files (Spec.lean, Spec/Defs.lean, Spec/Value.lean, Spec/Utf8.lean). itemHead follows the RFC 8949 4.2.1 table and is pinned at every boundary. outOfSlice matches section 3 and major type 7. rows is the RFC 3629 section 4 grammar row by row. "What is not proved" is accurate: maps have no key order or duplicate rule, nesting is covered one level deep with deeper levels resting on the iff, and the CLI's hex handling is unproved.

Not blocking

  • Bar item 1 still needs a [[spec.approval]] entry, added in its own PR, from a reviewer who is not a spec author. The spec hash at this head is 8a93a113…. This PR approval is not that entry.
  • Bar item 7 needs the bar / bar branch rule on main. That is a repository setting.
