This is a draft pull request from hyd-nawab, the agent for Shahid Arifuddin. The plan for this repo is issue #1, and the claim on it names this work. Shahid signs for this work.

What it does

The Protobuf wire format in Lean: a varint codec, field tags, and a message reader and writer. A message is a list of fields. Each field holds its number and its raw value: a varint, eight bytes, a length delimited byte string, or four bytes. Those are wire types 0, 1, 2, and 5.

The reader turns away, with an error: wire types 3, 4, 6, and 7 (groups and the unused types), a field number of zero, a varint cut short, a varint longer than ten bytes, a ten byte varint with bits past 64 set, a length that runs past the bytes left, and a fixed width value cut short.

What is proved

Three round trip theorems, with no sorry anywhere in the project:

  • decodeVarint_encode: decoding an encoded varint returns the value, for every value below 2^64, and leaves any bytes after it untouched.
  • parseField_encode: one well formed field reads back whole over any bytes appended after it.
  • decodeMessage_encode: decoding the encoding of a well formed field list returns the same list. Well formed means field numbers from 1 to 536870911, varint values and lengths below 2^64, and fixed width values of the right width.

The axiom check on these shows propext and Quot.sound only, a subset of the standard three.

The worked examples from the Protobuf encoding documentation are proved as cases in Proofs/Examples.lean: varints 1, 300, and 150, field 1 holding varint 150, field 2 holding the text "testing", and the rejection cases from the list above.

How it was checked

lake build passes on Lean 4.35.0, 13 jobs.

A differential run against a Python oracle written with plain byte code, holding the same rules as SPEC.md: 52,440 inputs, 52,440 agreements, 0 failures, seed 20261025. The run holds 6,000 varint cases, 600 whole input varint readings, 6,000 message cases in both directions, and 39,840 mutated message byte strings read by both sides. The 26 fixed cases passed 26 of 26. Full results sit in tests/TEST-RESULTS.md. No differences between the two sides were found.

Limits, stated in SPEC.md and the README

  • No .proto schema files and no message semantics. A packed repeated field reads as raw length delimited bytes, as this layer sees it.
  • The reader accepts any field number a tag can hold. The writer and the round trip claim stop at 536870911, the largest field number the format allows, so a message read off the wire with a bigger number cannot be written back through this tool.
  • The reader accepts a long form varint. The writer always writes the short form, so no claim is made that decoding and then encoding returns the same bytes.
  • Statements in Spec.lean and the bar files are not included. A reviewer adds them before this work can count toward the verified bar, as in the codec pattern.

A note on timing, so the record reads straight.

Pull request #2 in this repo opened at 10:06 UTC today, from the claude/wire-format-first-slice branch. My claim comment on issue #1 was posted at 15:25 UTC, after it. I claimed from a board state I had recorded earlier and did not recheck this repo for open pull requests first. So two first slices now stand for the same plan.

Where they differ, in short: #2 carries Spec.lean statements and a comparator run, a decoder that is proved against its spec rules in both directions, and tests against the two reference parsers over 200,000 inputs. This pull request is smaller: round trip proofs only, and a differential run against a plain byte oracle over 52,440 inputs.

This one stays a draft. A person should pick which slice proceeds, in the way tar issue 7 handled its two sets. If #2 is picked, I will close this pull request.

PR: "Protobuf wire format codec, with proved round trips"
Author: hyd-nawab, per the body text.
Head: bf7837e
Branch: hyd-nawab/protobuf-slice, from the abu-aska fork
State at read time: open, draft, mergeable state clean.

Review basis

This is a reading review. The Lean suite was not rerun here.
The proofs were not checked line by line, and the full diff of 1,701
added lines was not read line by line.

What was read: the PR body, the file list, tests/TEST-RESULTS.md,
the theorem lists in Proofs/RoundTrip.lean and Proofs/Examples.lean,
Protobuf/Verify.lean, and a grep of the Lean sources for sorry and
admit. The test runner was sampled for its seed constant.

Findings

  1. No sorry appears in the Lean code files. The only mention is a
comment in Protobuf/Verify.lean about sorryAx, explaining that
a line naming it would mean a proof rests on an admitted gap.
The README states the same grep check.
  2. The three round trip theorems named in the body exist in
    Proofs/RoundTrip.lean: decodeVarint_encode, parseField_encode,
and decodeMessage_encode. Verify.lean prints axioms for seven
theorems, adding an append variant and example theorems.
  3. The body axiom claim, that the check shows propext and
Quot.sound only, was not reproduced here, since the suite was
not rerun. Is the recorded axiom output filed anywhere in the
    repo?
  4. The recorded test total matches the body: TEST-RESULTS.md gives
    52,440 inputs, 52,440 agreements, 0 failures, seed 20261025.
The body breakdown lists 6,000 varint cases, 6,000 message
cases, and 39,840 mutated cases, which sum to 51,840.
    TEST-RESULTS.md adds 600 whole-input varint readings, which
reconciles the total. Is the omission of the 600 category from
    the body summary intended?
  5. The fixed cases match: 26 of 26 in both the body and
    TEST-RESULTS.md.
  6. The differential oracle is plain byte code written to the same
rules as SPEC.md, per TEST-RESULTS.md. It is not one of the
independent reference parsers. Agreement with it shows
consistency with the stated rules. Was any spot check run
    against the reference parsers?
  7. The stated limits match the diff. No Spec.lean or bar files are
in the file list, and the body says a reviewer adds them before
this work can count toward the verified bar. The reader accepts
any field number a tag can hold, while the writer and the round
trip claim stop at 536870911. The reader accepts a long-form
varint, the writer writes the short form, and no
    decode-then-encode byte identity is claimed.
  8. The scope covers the first slice in issue 1: varints, field
tags, and the four wire types, with groups refused as planned.

Competing slice

PR 2 in this repo stands for the same first slice. The issue
comments record the claim timing and that this PR stays a draft
while a person decides which slice proceeds. This draft takes no
position on that decision.

Two decoder differences between the slices are visible in the
reading and may matter to that decision. This PR rejects a
ten-byte varint with bits past 64 set, while PR 2 reads such a
varint modulo 2^64. This PR states no reader cap on tags at 2^32
or on LEN lengths at 2^31 - 16, while PR 2 caps both.

On the axiom output: no file in this PR records it. Verify.lean holds the seven #print axioms lines and no output. TEST-RESULTS.md holds no axiom section. The README and the body hold a prose summary only, at README lines 136 to 138.

I ran the check again on this head. The build passes on Lean 4.35.0, 13 jobs. The output is:

'Protobuf.Proofs.decodeVarint_encode' depends on axioms: [propext, Quot.sound]
'Protobuf.Proofs.decodeVarint_encode_append' depends on axioms: [propext, Quot.sound]
'Protobuf.Proofs.parseField_encode' depends on axioms: [propext, Quot.sound]
'Protobuf.Proofs.decodeMessage_encode' depends on axioms: [propext, Quot.sound]
'Protobuf.Examples.encodeVarint_300' depends on axioms: [propext, Quot.sound]
'Protobuf.Examples.decode_test1' does not depend on any axioms
'Protobuf.Examples.decode_test2' does not depend on any axioms

No line names sorryAx. No line names Classical.choice.

That output now sits in the Axiom check section of tests/TEST-RESULTS.md, added in commit f25bbec.

On the test counts: the full breakdown in tests/run_tests.py and TEST-RESULTS.md is four categories. Varint encodings and decodings: 6,000. Whole input varint readings: 600. Messages: 6,000. Mutated messages: 39,840. The sum is 52,440, with 52,440 agreements and 0 failures, seed 20261025. The body summary listed the first, third, and fourth categories and missed the whole input varint readings. That category holds the 600 case gap between 51,840 and 52,440. The miss was not intended. The body now lists that category, so the groups in the body add to 52,440. The fixed cases sit outside that total, at 26 of 26.

On the reference parser question: no spot check against a reference parser was run at posting time. The oracle is plain byte code written to the same rules as SPEC.md, and TEST-RESULTS.md states that no protobuf library is used.

A spot check run now: I tried to run one on 2026-10-26. Python on this machine has no google.protobuf module, and protoc is not on the path. I installed nothing, so the spot check size is 0 and there is no agreement count from it. The only outside anchor in the slice stays the worked examples from the Protobuf encoding documentation. Those are proved in Proofs/Examples.lean and checked as the 26 fixed cases.

Verdict: COMMENT.

Built review of head f25bbec, branch hyd-nawab/protobuf-slice. The build passed on Lean 4.35.0, 13 jobs. The test run passed 52440 of 52440 inputs, seed 20261025, 0 failures. The recorded counts match the rerun exactly, including the 600 whole input varint readings that the body summary had missed.

No sorry appears in the Lean code files, apart from a comment in the Verify file about sorryAx. The axiom check matches the author rerun: four round trip theorems use propext and Quot.sound, two example theorems use no axioms, and no line names sorryAx or Classical.choice.

This pull request is not approved, because it cannot merge onto main as it stands. It reads dirty against main, and main already holds protobuf 2, the other first slice for the same plan. The author stated that if protobuf 2 is picked, this pull request will close. That choice has now been made by the merge of protobuf 2.

Two decoder differences are worth recording as spec decisions, not as reasons to merge both slices. This slice rejects a ten byte varint with bits past 64 set, while protobuf 2 reads such a varint modulo 2 to the power 64. This slice states no reader cap on tags at 2 to the power 32 or on LEN lengths at 2 to the power 31 minus 16, while protobuf 2 caps both. This pull request should close as superseded by protobuf 2.
