Four variables name the system's default output and input devices and the ones Windows uses for calls; writing a device name to one switches to it. The "Set the default audio device" action does the same with a device picked from a list.

Windows reads devices through Core Audio and switches them through the undocumented IPolicyConfig, macOS uses Core Audio, Linux runs pactl with JSON output. macOS and Linux have no separate call devices, so the communication roles are the plain defaults there.
