ACE-Step 1.5 never gives the timbre encoder the whole reference: process_reference_audio (acestep/core/generation/handler/io_audio.py) repeats a reference shorter than 30 s up to 30 s, then joins 10 s from each third (front, middle, back). acestep.cpp encodes the whole recording, or the whole latent, so a 3-minute vocal reaches the timbre encoder as ~4500 frames where the model always saw 750, and the voice is averaged over silences and other parts.

This does the same sampling in ops_encode_timbre for both paths (48 kHz stereo audio before the VAE encoder, 25 fps latents), taking the middle 10 s of each third instead of a random one so a request stays reproducible.

Checked with ace-synth (turbo Q8_0): a 69 s reference logs ref_audio: 69.0s in, 750 frames (30.0s), a 23 s one 23.0s in, 750 frames (30.0s); the 10 s outputs are normal music (mean -21 dB).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Enhancements
    • Timbre reference processing now supports short audio clips by repeating them before selecting centered windows.
    • Longer references are consistently divided into three representative 10-second windows.
    • Pre-encoded timbre references and raw audio references now use the same windowing behavior for more consistent conditioning.
    • Processing logs now include the selected latent-frame count and original reference duration.

📝 Walkthrough

Timbre reference processing now selects centered windows from each third of the reference. References shorter than 30 seconds are repeated to reach that duration. The selected windows are applied to pre-encoded latents before conditioning and to raw audio before VAE encoding. Logs include retained frame counts and original audio duration.

Changes: Timbre reference processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and apply timbre windows
src/pipeline-synth-ops.cpp
A new helper selects centered windows of up to 10 seconds from each third of the reference. Short references are repeated to reach 30 seconds. Pre-encoded latents are windowed before conditioning, and raw audio is windowed before VAE encoding. Logs report retained frame counts and original audio duration.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6c141

Long timbre references are now trimmed to three 10-second segments before encoding, which reduces the overall processing cost. A small inefficiency remains: the full reference is copied once before trimming. It can be fixed easily and does not block merging.

Avoid copying the full reference before windowing.

For references of at least 30 seconds, timbre_window copies all input frames into src, then keeps only three 10-second windows. This creates a transient second copy of the input buffer. The impact is a bounded memory inefficiency, not a major memory-exhaustion risk. The caller already holds the full input, and the previous raw-audio path VAE-encoded the full reference. Compute the three offsets from n and copy only the selected spans. Preserve repetition for shorter references.
