A phase that crashes after an unauthorized write must fail its write boundary before retrying. Serial recovery now protects builder WIP from a read-only crasher while keeping authorized writer WIP retryable and honoring ignored declared outputs. Parallel recovery waits for siblings and enforces the group's original boundary before another retry wave. Only dead members retry; completed sibling results are retained, preserving U12 without additional group reruns or model cost.
Worker Git operations now harden hooks, fsmonitor, external commands, and GC while retaining global credential helpers. Unsafe repository-local configuration/includes/hooks and Git metadata are refused without repair. Ready repository-cache origins are revalidated on every use; worktree pointers, admin/backlinks, common directories, and attempt branches are checked before use. Pointer parsing preserves whitespace/layout compatibility, uses raw relative concatenation, and resolves physical symlinks before .. cleanup.
Origin validation rejects custom remote-helper transports before identity normalization while retaining native HTTP(S), SSH, git, file, SCP, and canonical absolute local paths (including ::). Refusal messages avoid echoing URL userinfo, configuration subsections, unexpected raw values, or malformed-origin details.
Validation
Evidence supplied with the final reviewed patch:
Final just check: PASS (Go tests, build, vet, formatting, definitions, and worker boundary). Focused transport/credential/symlink tests and parent's 25 focused tests: PASS.
Extended full race run passed 877 tests with five skips and no detected races before the final compatibility ordering adjustment. After that adjustment, the full worker race suite passed in 69.6 seconds, final just check passed, and scoped SOL worker/engine race checks passed. The 877-test run was not repeated after the last source change.
Earlier integrated full race run passed 860 tests. New helper/credential tests failed before the fixes and passed afterward; final compatibility tests failed with the old ordering and passed with the correction.
A real local path containing :: was fetched with HEAD proof. Remote URL/IPv6 and raw c://d cases exercised validation only, without network access. Git itself refuses a raw c://d fetch; the canonical clone path does not produce that form.
Delivery verified the exact 11 paths before staging and after commit on base 31707f2fae342e0dfa57872ef633b25fc46663a4. Reviewed content SHA256 (sorted UTF-8 path + NUL + bytes + NUL): 254be5377c415fe6aa207459e260d7f435f63a9ccbf46d152e27092f6e55523d.
Fixtures are synthetic/local, including a local fake global-credential HTTP endpoint. No live operator services/data/credentials, inference, or real Jig-to-GitHub job publication were tested. No UI, dependency, or migration changes.
Limits
Point-of-use metadata checks are not a sandbox against concurrent writers: a running agent can rewrite metadata after validation and before Git uses it. Refusal leaves files untouched for operator inspection; there is no automatic repair or deletion.
Soul Loop
Rounds: 5 with gpt-6.1-sol; rounds 4 and 5 were explicitly user-authorized beyond the normal three-round budget.
Round 3: transport disconnected, NO VERDICT; the identified symlink/.. exploit was subsequently fixed.
Round 4: CHANGES_REQUIRED for custom-helper/credential-error handling; corrected before the final review.
Round 5 verdict: SCOPED PASS of the corrections, interactions, and U12 disposition.
U12 disposition: per-dead-member retry with retained sibling results follows the written plan and the existing test; round 5 agreed.
Unresolved findings: None within the final scoped review. No additional SOL round is claimed or budgeted.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Write-boundary violations are now detected before failed tasks are retried, preventing unauthorized changes from carrying into another attempt.
Linked worktree metadata changes are detected as boundary breaches.
Unsafe or invalid repository and worktree metadata is rejected before publishing or reusing cached repositories, helping prevent unintended Git operations.
Failed-task changes to declared build outputs are rolled back before retry; authorized crashes can still be retried.

The engine now enforces write boundaries before retrying dead phases and parallel members. The worker validates Git cache and worktree metadata before cleanup, publication, and repository operations.

Please review draft PR #42 at head bf39837e2b95487f11e86f764fa0ac7d0ccf9e25 against base 31707f2fae342e0dfa57872ef633b25fc46663a4. Automatic review explicitly skipped this draft; this is the single manual review request for this head.
The PR body records the final reviewed 11-file hash, scoped SOL round-5 PASS and explicitly authorized review extension, U12 per-dead-member retry disposition, accurate validation sequence, and the remaining concurrent-writer metadata limitation. Mode-only edits can be lost when core.filemode is false.
inertCacheConfig accepts core.filemode=false (internal/worker/metadata.go:32-35). With that value, git status ignores executable-bit changes. cleanupEligible (internal/worker/worktree.go:160-186) then returns nil when the head equals BaseSHA. disposeAttemptWorktree (internal/worker/reconcile.go:443-467) calls removeWorktree without --force in that case, which can delete the worktree and its uncommitted mode change. When the head is ahead of the base and published, cleanup follows the same path. In commitChangedPaths (internal/worker/publish.go:637-689), an empty status skips staging, so the mode change is not published.
Do not reject core.filemode=false outright. Git can set it itself on filesystems without executable-bit support, so refusing it would reject valid cache entries. Forcing core.filemode=true on the status checks can report executable files as modified on those filesystems. A correction needs a check that detects mode-only changes without either side effect.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 31707f2fae34); the change keeps it reachable.

Restore reclamation for worker cache entries, or add an explicit maintenance step.
workerGitHardening sets gc.auto=0 and maintenance.auto=false on every worker git command. Cache entries are installed once and reused indefinitely, and nothing else reclaims unreachable objects. Repeated fetches with --prune after force-pushes or branch deletions therefore leave objects in the entry without bound. Before this change, the worker ran with git's default automatic GC. Add a bounded reclaim step to the cache lifecycle, such as an explicit git gc --prune=<expiry> run under the entry mutex when no worktree is active. Do not reintroduce automatic GC for detached background runs.
