Apple MPEG4 & MPEG2 Tool is a Windows batch utility for converting modern video into (mp4v) video inside a .mov container**, with presets intended for playback on older PowerPC G4 Macintosh systems.
The tool is aimed at producing practical, QuickTime-era files at several resolutions and bitrates rather than simply preserving the original source format.
This tool uses MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2, not H.264/AVC.
The target is older Macintosh hardware and software where MPEG is a useful compromise between image quality, file size, and decoding complexity. Actual playback capability depends on the G4 model, clock speed, video resolution, framerate, bitrate, and the playback software being used.
The presets therefore include approximate G4 CPU playback recommendations. These are practical targets, not hard hardware guarantees.
| Preset | Recommended minimum G4 |
|---|---|
| 720p Enhanced | 1.42 GHz G4 or faster |
| 720p Standard | 1.20 GHz G4 or faster |
| 576p | 1.00 GHz G4 or faster |
| 480p | 800 MHz G4 or faster |
| SVGA | 800 MHz G4 or faster |
| VGA | 667 MHz G4 or faster |
| QVGA | 500 MHz G4 or faster |
| PAL DVD | 667 MHz G4 or faster |
| NTSC DVD | 667 MHz G4 or faster |
These recommendations describe the intended playback target for each preset. They are not a statement that every G4 at or above the listed clock speed will produce identical results.
- MOV container — output remains a
.movfile for compatibility with QuickTime-era workflows. - Resolution presets — 720p Enhanced, 720p Standard, 576p, 480p, SVGA, VGA, QVGA, PAL DVD, NTSC DVD, and Source.
- Framerate selection — Source, 23.976 fps, 25 fps, 29.97 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps.
- Two-pass encoding — the first pass generates bitrate statistics and the second pass performs the final encode.
- Preset bitrate control — each resolution class has a defined target bitrate, maximum bitrate, and VBV buffer appropriate to the selected profile.
- Encoding parameters — the encoder uses MPEG-4-compatible motion estimation and quality-control and MPEG-2-specific encoder options.
- AAC audio — source audio can be retained/re-encoded as AAC alongside the video.
- G4-oriented presets — the interface identifies the intended minimum G4 CPU class for each resolution.

- Download a Windows build of FFmpeg 7.
- Extract FFmpeg.
- Place the
AppleMPEG2/4_Tool.batbatch file where it can access the "ffplay.exe, ffmpeg.exe & ffprobe.exe" executables, according to the layout of your FFmpeg installation. - Drag the video you would like to convert onto the batch file.
- Select the desired resolution preset.
- Select the desired framerate.
- The tool performs the configured two-pass encode.
The resulting file is written as a .mov.
The tool provides:
1). Source
2). 23.976 (24000/1001)
3). 25
4). 29.97 (30000/1001)
5). 30
6). 60
For older G4 systems, lower framerates generally reduce the amount of work required during playback. A 23.976 or 25 fps source is therefore a more conservative target than 60 fps.
This project does not claim that every Mac OS X release, QuickTime build, or third-party player will support every generated file identically. Playback should be tested on the target PowerPC system and software configuration. You may try XBMC 11, VLC, RealPlayer, Quicktime or iTunes.
If a particular QuickTime installation does not recognize the MPEG-4 stream, verify the installed QuickTime version and available MPEG-4 components before assuming the encoded video itself is invalid. You may also want to try installing perian for Mac OS X. This is a 3rd party codec pack for QuickTime.
The G4 recommendations are based on the intended workload of the presets, but playback performance is not determined by CPU clock speed alone.
Factors include:
- G4 generation and architecture
- AltiVec implementation
- Video resolution
- Framerate
- MPEG-4 bitrate
- Number of B-frames
- Player implementation
- QuickTime version
- Storage performance
- Other processes running on the system
A faster CPU is not a guarantee of flawless playback, and a slower CPU may sometimes handle a particular file successfully depending on the exact stream.
