Review: validate session authentication
Overall: solid fix. This replaces a broken validation with the correct one and cleans up several latent issues around it. Posting as comment per usual practice for owner-authored PRs. All four touched test suites pass (35/35) and typecheck is clean for the touched files.
The core fix is real
The old "validation" called GET api.github.com/user with the token. That only proves the token is a valid GitHub token — it says nothing about Copilot entitlement, so a user without a Copilot subscription could "successfully" log in and then fail confusingly at chat time. The new code validates the way the API actually works: it exchanges the OAuth token for a Copilot API token via api.github.com/copilot_internal/v2/token — the same endpoint used at request time — and rejects the login if that exchange fails. Both login paths (device flow and traditional OAuth) now validate through this shared getGitHubCopilotToken before saving the key.
Improvements worth calling out
- Response schema validation — the token exchange response is now parsed with zod (
tokenmust be printable ASCII,expires_atpositive/finite) instead of blind casting. - Sanitized error surfaces —
createGitHubCopilotHttpErrorredacts known secrets,gh[opusr]_/github_pat_patterns, andBearertokens from server messages before they reach logs/UI, and caps length. The old code interpolated rawerrorTextinto thrown messages. - Race guard on account switch —
getCopilotTokencaptures the provider reference beforeawaitand only writes the token cacheif (this.provider === provider), so an exchange started before a config change can't poison the new account's cache. Nice touch. - Startup no longer does network I/O for validation —
checkExistingAuth(which ran during provider init and would silently clear the stored key on any network failure, including offline starts) is removed. Stale keys now surface lazily at check/use time with clear errors. Strictly better behavior. - Errors are thrown instead of swallowed — the old
return falsepaths hid failures from the caller. - Proxy handling removal is not a regression — the old per-request
HttpsProxyAgentused node-fetch-v2RequestInit.agentsemantics on undici'sfetch, where it was effectively inert; proxying is handled globally by the undici dispatcher insrc/main/platform/proxy.ts(setGlobalDispatcher), which plainfetchgoes through. The removal is a cleanup of dead/misleading code.
Minor notes
GITHUB_COPILOT_CHAT_HEADERSsendsUser-Agent: GitHubCopilotChat/0.44.0/Editor-Version: vscode/1.115.0. Impersonating the VS Code client is what unofficial Copilot clients generally do and theCopilot-Integration-Id: vscode-chatheader predates this PR, but the new header set extends it — a deliberate product choice worth being aware of, not something this PR introduced.- The device-flow client ID now falls back to the hard-coded public VS Code Copilot client ID (
Iv1.b507a08c87ecfe98) when no.env/override exists. That's a public identifier shipped in VS Code binaries, not a secret, and it makes device flow work out of the box. Fine. .env.exampleno longer claims both ID and secret are required — the comment now matches reality (device flow needs neither, traditional OAuth needs both).

Re-review: follow-up commit 7c56ce917 (guard account changes)
Still looks good. The delta extends exactly the race-condition hardening noted in my earlier review, closing two real windows:
-
Sign-in TOCTOU — device flow and OAuth can take minutes between reading the provider config and saving the new key. The new
saveGitHubCopilotCredentialre-reads the current config at save time and refuses to write ifapiType, apiKey, orcopilotClientIdchanged mid-flight ("configuration changed during sign-in"), instead of clobbering the newer config with a stale token. Both login paths use it. -
Token-exchange guard hardened — the provider's
getCopilotTokennow throws a clear error when the storedapiKeychanged during the exchange, instead of silently returning the freshly exchanged token. The reference-identity check from the first commit remains as the outer condition for the cache write.
Both are correct and the tests cover them (the delta adds 48+83 lines of tests for these guards; all three Copilot suites pass, 44/44). No new concerns — this closes out my earlier review.

GitHub sign-in could report Copilot as connected before checking Copilot access. Subsequent token or chat failures could lose their original cause, and startup validation could clear the saved credential.
Both Device Flow and traditional OAuth validate a Copilot session token before saving a new GitHub credential or reporting success. Credential persistence rechecks the current authentication settings and merges the credential into the latest provider record, preserving unrelated edits. Session tokens are cached until expiry. Changing the account during an exchange rejects the original chat request before it can send the old account's token; unrelated settings updates keep valid requests working.
