Review: refresh Codex models and errors
Overall: looks good. Three coherent fixes riding together: a Codex model-catalog refresh (including treating image models properly), typed auth errors for Codex sign-in expiry, and plumbing provider-failure metadata through to the CLI layer instead of discarding it. Plus the usual build-generated registry refresh. All in-scope tests pass (99/99; one test file fails to import on acp-extension-core, which is a pre-existing local node_modules gap that reproduces on dev, not caused by this PR). Posting as comment per usual practice for owner-authored PRs.
What changed, verified piece by piece
-
Codex recommended models refreshed — gpt-6.x series (
gpt-6.1-sol,gpt-6-astra,gpt-6-sol,gpt-6-luna) replaces the dropped gpt-5.4/5.3 entries; image models (gpt-image-2.5-sunburst/flare) added. The old "name contains codex" fallback filter is gone; image IDs missing from provider-db are now synthesized as custom entries instead. Cleaner single source of truth. -
Codex image models are now actually typed as image models — in the fallback config path,
openai-codex+isOpenAIImageGenerationModelIdnow yieldsModelType.ImageGeneration/ApiEndpointType.ImagewithfunctionCall: false, instead of everything defaulting to Chat. This is the actual "media support" fix — previously image generation through Codex would have been configured as a chat model. -
Auth errors are typed and actionable — missing/invalid Codex tokens now throw
ProviderHttpError(401,openai_codex_sign_in_required, non-retryable) instead of bareError; aninvalid_refresh_tokenserver response maps to "sign-in has expired, sign in again". The CLI layer (computeService) recognizes that code and returnsauthentication_failedwith 401. -
Failure metadata no longer discarded —
ProviderRuntimeattaches the stream event'sfailure(typed optional field onErrorStreamEvent, confirmed inllm-events.ts) to the thrown error at all three collect sites, andcomputeServiceextracts it via the existingextractProviderFailureMetadatahelper, mirroring the pattern already used at the non-media invoke path. Media-generation failures now honor real retryability instead of a blanketretriable: true, and the log carries a structured failure object instead of justerror.name. -
Registry refresh is genuine upstream drift — semantic comparison of
providers.json: one new upstream provider (lowrouter), 27 existing providers updated, nothing else;registry.jsononly driftsagents. Not hand-edited.
Minor notes
- The
Object.assign(new Error(...), { failure })pattern is ad-hoc property attachment rather than a typed error subclass. It matches howextractProviderFailureMetadataalready reads properties off thrown errors, so it's consistent pragmatism — but a named error class would make the contract explicit if this pattern spreads further. - The commit message ("update Codex media support") undersells the second half of the change (error propagation); the PR title is more accurate. Cosmetic.
Checks performed
- All six in-scope test files run: 99/99 tests pass (
providerRuntime.test.tsfails to load on the pre-existingacp-extension-coregap, unrelated). isOpenAIImageGenerationModelId,extractProviderFailureMetadata,ModelInvokeProviderFailureSchema, andproviderFailureIsRetryableall exist; the new CLI retryability logic mirrors the existing invoke path atcomputeService.ts:433.ErrorStreamEvent.failureis a typed optional field — the new propagation reads a real contract, not an untyped escape hatch.

Re-review: follow-up commit 0a8a2d3f15 (preserve Codex error semantics)
Still looks good — this follow-up fixes two real defects in the first commit. Tests pass (13/13 in the touched auth suite, including the new parameterized cases).
-
Storage failures are no longer misclassified as sign-in failures. In the first commit, a corrupt/unreadable credential file was thrown as
ProviderHttpErrorwithopenai_codex_sign_in_required— which would have made the CLI tell the user to "sign in again" for what is actually a storage problem (and the wrong remediation: sign-in wouldn't fix a broken JSON file). Load errors are now plainErrors without failure metadata; the test explicitly assertsextractProviderFailureMetadata(failure)?.codeis not the sign-in code and the file is left untouched. -
Truncation no longer breaks sign-in detection. The first commit's
readErrorBodysliced the response to 1000 chars before the caller ranJSON.parseon it to detectinvalid_refresh_token— a longer error body would have been cut mid-JSON, the parse would fail, and the user would get a raw truncated blob instead of "sign-in has expired, sign in again". The follow-up returns the full body and truncates only when composing the diagnostic message. The tests cover both directions: a 2000-char body produces a message of exactly 1000 chars, and a 100×-repeated error message still parses correctly and maps to the sign-in error.
The registry drift in the delta (harn 0.10.163→0.10.165, nova 1.1.51→1.1.52) is normal build-generated upstream refresh.
No new concerns; my earlier review's conclusion stands with these two fixes folded in.
Media generation discarded provider failure metadata, turning expired Codex sign-in into a retryable
unavailableerror. Missing credentials and rejected Codex refresh tokens now returnauthentication_failedwith a sign-in-again message andretriable: false. Image, video, and speech failures retain sanitized HTTP status and retryability without exposing provider response text or headers. Credential-file read/decryption failures retain their storage-error classification. OAuth error responses are parsed in full before diagnostic messages are limited to 1,000 characters. The curated Codex model list now includes GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra/Sol/Luna, and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst/Flare, and omits retired GPT-5.4/mini and Codex Spark. Curated image models remain available when provider-db metadata is missing, with image-route defaults that preserve explicit user settings. Normal build-generated provider and ACP catalog refreshes are included.
Refs #2424. The confirmed Codex failure was
invalid_refresh_tokenbefore the image request; the original custom-gateway reproduction has not been independently verified.Model picker
