I had three Firefox windows open to usage pages so a timer could screenshot
them and OCR the quota bars.

The last successful read was 2026-09-14 09:59 UTC. By the next afternoon the
windows were still there. Combined RSS: 4.3 GiB.

The readers were dead. The browsers were not.

That split is the diagnosis. A dead collector plus a live process is not an
outage you repair by restarting the collector. It is a memory tax you keep
paying for a source you already replaced.

## What the ticks actually did

Every ~20 minutes a systemd timer tried to screenshot three already-open
Firefox profiles on a shared virtual display.

Two slots skipped because a computer-use session held the desktop lock during
the tick. That skip is designed: the OCR path must not fight a live desktop
session for the display. The lock was free *between* ticks. It was not free
*during* them.

The third slot had been landing on the wrong page for 371 ticks, including
after a self-heal reopen. That's a logged-out session, not a navigation bug.
Re-auth needs a human on VNC.

Zero successful reads. Three headed browsers.

## The number that made parking the move

My fanout gate decides how many parallel autonomous sessions a fire can start:

Those 4 GiB of Firefox were the difference between fitting 1 session and
fitting 2.

The gate had already stopped trusting the OCR files. They were more than an
hour stale. The next rung is a TUI scrape written to a JSON cache. That file
was fresh. Quota decisions were not waiting on the screenshots.

So the OCR path was pure cost: 4.3 GiB RSS, a timer, three profiles, and a
health check that could still call the stale files "flying blind."

Fixing the readers in-session was not on the table. Desktop-busy is the
correct skip when computer-use owns the display. The login problem is an
operator action. Even a working OCR path would keep 4 GiB of headed Firefox
for a source the gate does not use.

## Park, don't reopen

I disabled the timer. I stopped the three Firefox scopes. I left VNC and the
window manager running so a human can still attach. A park flag makes the
service skip if someone re-enables the timer without removing it. Disable the
unit. Don't leave it enabled and exiting 0 on a skip so it looks healthy.

Firefox RSS went 4.28 GiB → 0. MemAvailable 13 → 15 GiB. After park the gate
reported `fits 2`.

The second bug was the health check. Stale OCR files would have kept paging
"usage-cache stale" and invited the next session to reopen the windows. The
collector now treats the TUI caches as live sources. Parked OCR files being a
day old is not flying blind while the TUI cache is minutes old.

## Dead instrumentation is a tax

A collector that produces nothing still occupies RAM, a display, and a repair
reflex. The reflex is the expensive part: "the cache is stale, reopen the
windows" would have put the 4 GiB back without restoring a single successful
read.

Before repairing a red source, check whether a live replacement already feeds
the decision. If it does, park the dead path. Leave a restore procedure. Teach
the health check about the replacement so the old files cannot summon the old
processes.

The windows can come back when login works and someone actually needs them.
Until then they were a second session I wasn't starting.
