Issue

  • Users have no clear visual indicator/reminder of a new resource being made available.
  • Consequently, during play users go unaware of vital info that would help them advance the scenario.
  • We require some form of notification system for when new resources are available to the current player.

Solution

  • Tracks which resources each player has opened, flags unopened + visible resources.
  • "seenResources" map added to User model.
  • Opening a resource marks it as "seen", updates atomically.
  • "New" text badge displays on each unopened resource + "new" count on the resource modal button.
  • Toast notif for new resources. Each resource is only "announced" once per session to avoid spam. For each action + visibility condition calc, a single toast will be displayed for how ever many new resource(s) unlock.
  • Used white/black for the toast (depending on light/dark mode) to keep it minimal and visually non intrusive + red is already used for error styling.
  • "Seen" history persists even once a conditional resource is re-hidden (as constant re-triggering conditions could lead to toast spam).
  • Refactored/centralised resource filtering/notif logic in usePlayerResources.
Resource.toast.test.1.mp4
Resource.toast.test.2.mp4

Risk

  • Seen Ids for deleted resources are not cleaned up. Rel harmless as only visible resources are compared against seen list, but the list will continue to grow. Had pruning implemented at one point but removed it, felt unnecessary. Lmk if u want me to slap it back in.

Checklist

  • Acceptance criteria met
  • Wiki documentation is written and up to date
  • Unit tests written and passing
  • Integration tests written and passing
  • Continuous integration build passing

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Resources now show which items are new, with badges for unseen resources and a count on the resources button.
    • Selecting a resource marks it as seen. Seen resources are remembered for each scenario, and newly available resources trigger a notification.
    • Resource lists support searching and filtering based on the current scene, and collections are marked as new when they contain unseen resources.
    • The resources panel displays the available resources for the current scene.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds scenario-specific seen-resource storage and API routes. Player resource hooks use this data to identify unseen resources. The player interface displays unseen resources and records them when selected.

Changes: Seen Resource Tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist and expose seen-resource IDs
backend/src/db/models/user.js, backend/src/db/daos/userDao.js, backend/src/routes/api/user.js
The user schema stores resource IDs by scenario. DAO functions retrieve and add IDs. Authenticated GET and PATCH routes validate IDs and return the stored resource IDs.
Load history and derive unseen resources
frontend/src/features/resources/useSeenResources.js, frontend/src/features/resources/usePlayerResources.js
The hooks load and update seen-resource IDs, filter resources by properties, and derive unseen IDs when the relevant data is ready.
Connect unseen state to the player resource panel
frontend/src/features/playScenario/PlayScenarioPage.jsx, frontend/src/features/resources/util.js, frontend/src/features/resources/ResourcesOverlay.jsx, frontend/src/features/resources/ResourceTree.jsx, frontend/src/index.css
The player displays the unseen count and passes resource state to the panel. The panel marks selected resources as seen, and the tree labels unseen resources and collections. The stylesheet adds slide-in keyframes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8af4a

Returning to a player page after a navigation error can repeat the “new resource” toast for an unmarked resource. This is a bounded notification annoyance, so the PR remains mergeable with follow-up to preserve announcement state across page remounts.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b047d

The new history operations are restricted to the signed-in user's account, and resource visibility filtering remains in place. The main design concern is unrestricted history growth inside the same account record that stores scenario progress. Wider access or a service-wide failure has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new authenticated PATCH operation permits repeated insertion of arbitrary valid resource IDs under arbitrary valid scenario keys, without cumulative bounds. Because this history shares the User document with scenario progress and state versions, notification metadata can grow toward database document limits and impair unrelated updates for that account. Authentication contains direct writes to the caller's account; service-wide impact is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly writable scope is the authenticated caller's scenario-keyed history inside their User document. These endpoints return IDs, not resource contents, and do not grant scenario access. Storage growth can affect the caller's co-located progress state; cross-account modification and service-wide outage are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An authenticated caller with an existing User record can bypass the normal one-resource UI action and repeatedly PATCH distinct, invented 24-character hexadecimal IDs, including under invented scenario keys. The route accepts them and the database accumulates them without a cumulative bound. Duplicate suppression limits repetition of identical IDs, not growth from distinct IDs. The resulting account-document exhaustion is a design risk, not a demonstrated production outage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Firebase token verification is the identity boundary, and UID-filtered database operations enforce account ownership. Hexadecimal ObjectId validation prevents caller-controlled scenario keys from containing database path separators. Association checks are absent, but writing arbitrary self-owned notification metadata is not by itself evidence of cross-scenario privilege escalation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Persistent state and query-cache identity are scoped by user and scenario, but optimistic markedIds and announcedIds are hook-instance state without an explicit identity/scenario reset. Remount clears them; isolation when an instance survives a transition remains unproven. Their evidenced consumers are notification calculations, not server authorization.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bound cumulative history per account and scenario independently of request-size limits. Validate scenario/resource associations where required by product policy, and consider separately bounded history storage so notification growth cannot consume the progress document's capacity.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Update the other ObjectPropertyEditor caller.

frontend/src/features/authoring/CanvasSideBar/ComponentProperties.jsx Line 47 still renders <ObjectPropertyEditor component={component} />. At that caller, open is undefined, so SidePanel hides the property controls. onToggle is also undefined, so the button cannot open them. Pass controlled panel state from that caller, or keep a working default for callers without these props.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update cached history after a successful mark.

When a player marks a resource seen and leaves the page, markedIds disappears but the query cache still contains the old history. If the player returns before cache expiry, TanStack Query returns that history while it refetches. The badge can reappear, and usePlayerResources can show a false “new resource” toast. Merge successful IDs into the query cache for this user and scenario; account for an in-flight history fetch so it cannot restore older data. (tanstack.com)

one nitpick, but good idea on extracting into a hook, way cleaner

correct me if im wrong but are these useMemos actually doing nothing? Seems like basically any change that would trigger a re render is included in these memos, so its just adding overhead.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve announced resource IDs across player-page remounts.

PlayScenarioPage pushes to /play/${scenarioId}/error when navigation fails. Returning with browser history remounts PlayScenarioPage within the same resolver. The hook-local announcedIds set then resets, while cached unseen resources remain unseen. The toast effect can announce the same resource again, violating the once-per-session behavior.

Keep the announcement set in a session-scoped owner above PlayScenarioPage, keyed to the authenticated player.
