feat: "Speed Test Widget" for new tab page or browser side panel — always one glance away #55

Description

@ajithakdev

Summary

Make MeterX's WiFi health score visible without even clicking the extension icon — always present as ambient information.

Options (implement one or more)

Option A: Enhanced Side Panel Dashboard (already partially exists)

  • Always-open side panel shows: WiFi Health Score, last test summary, mini sparkline, ISP delivery %, upcoming meeting health check
  • User pins it open for ambient monitoring

Option B: New Tab Override (opt-in)

  • Replace new tab page with a beautiful MeterX dashboard
  • Show: WiFi Health Score, recent history chart, ISP comparison, quick test button
  • Include useful links (bookmarks) so it replaces the default new tab usefully
  • Must be opt-in (users hate unexpected new tab changes)

Option C: Omnibox Integration

  • Type mx in the address bar, then press Tab
  • Type speed → shows last speed result inline
  • Type test → triggers a new speed test
  • Lightweight, no UI footprint

Why "always visible" matters

  • Extensions that provide ambient value (visible without clicking) have 3x higher retention
  • Users who forget extensions exist uninstall them
  • The toolbar badge helps, but a side panel dashboard or new tab makes MeterX feel like a built-in browser feature

Implementation

  • Side panel: Already exists, enhance with WiFi Health Score and richer dashboard
  • New tab: Add chrome_url_overrides.newtab to manifest (opt-in via settings)
  • Omnibox: Add omnibox permission with keyword mx
