fix(code-execution): the python runner gets the child allowlist and its own working directory (follow-up to #175) - #193
Conversation
…too, not the host's secrets anima-research#175 stops stdio MCPL children inheriting the host environment. The other child the framework spawns, the python interpreter behind code_execution, still got `{ ...process.env }` — and it runs model-authored code, so any agent with code execution could read every provider key and bot token on the host with one os.environ. The changelog's "one server's credentials are no longer readable by another" was not yet true on a host with code execution on. PyRunner builds its child env through buildChildEnv: the same operating allowlist (+ LC_*), plus the runner's own `env`, with `inheritEnv: true` as the same escape hatch. CodeExecutionConfig carries both and the framework threads them to both runner sites. PYTHONUNBUFFERED stays. Test: model-authored python asks os.environ for a host secret and gets None (red on the PR head: it printed the secret); declared env reaches the interpreter; inheritEnv restores the host env. Fix with agent prompt### Issue 1
src/code-execution/py-runner.ts:338
On Linux, printing a filename with bytes that are not valid UTF-8, such as `print(os.fsdecode(b'\xff'))`, now prevents the script from returning. `PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8` makes stdout reject these characters, but `send()` writes them through `json.dumps(..., ensure_ascii=False)`. It raises `UnicodeEncodeError` instead of sending `exec_result`, so `PyRunner` waits until the script deadline and then kills the interpreter.
Keep UTF-8, but escape these characters in JSON or use a compatible output error mode.

…itively on Windows Greptile's two findings on anima-research#193, both real: - The runner snapshotted its child env at construction, so a respawn after idle reclaim reused stale host values where the old per-spawn `{ ...process.env }` saw current ones. The env options are stored and buildChildEnv runs at every spawn. - Windows enumerates env names in arbitrary spellings (`Path`, `SystemRoot`, `ComSpec`) and the exact-case allowlist dropped them, starting every stdio/python child without its search path. On win32 the allowlist now matches by upper-cased name, keeping the original spelling; POSIX stays case-sensitive (`Path` is a different variable there). This also closes the anima-research#175 review's standing Windows note. Both tests red on the previous head: freshness 0/1, win32 casing 0/1; full suite 976/972/0. The upstream PR anima-research#205 review identified that host HTTPS_PROXY and declared https_proxy could both survive the object spread. Node sorts and deduplicates Windows environment keys before spawn, so the host value could defeat a declared empty override and retain proxy credentials. Match the Windows operating allowlist case-insensitively and merge host/default and declared sources separately under a case-folded name. Keep only the last spelling for each Windows variable, with declared values and empty strings taking precedence in both filtered and inheritEnv modes. POSIX remains case-sensitive. The optional platform argument and mixed-case allowlist matching compose with PR anima-research#193; that PR does not yet resolve cross-case override merging. Add table coverage for both casing directions of proxy/CA overrides in both inheritance modes, native mixed-case operating names, duplicate declared spellings, and POSIX distinctions. Focused tests were 7 pass / 4 fail on 11f06e6 and are 11 pass / 0 fail after the correction. Build and diff checks pass; full-suite and independent review receipts follow. * fix(mcpl): preserve child CA bundle and proxy settings Extend the operating environment allowlist with Python requests/curl CA bundles and uppercase/lowercase HTTP(S) proxy and bypass variables. These settings restore internal CA trust and egress access without opting into full host environment inheritance. Declared server values still override host defaults. Cover every added key, credential-bearing proxy URLs, empty/undefined values, declared overrides, retained secret scrubbing, and a real stdio child. The focused Node/tsx regression was 3 pass / 3 fail on main and is 6 pass / 0 fail with the change. Document that proxy credentials are included and the allowlist is not a process isolation boundary. Full compiled-suite differential is being collected for the PR. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@openai.com> * fix(mcpl): match Windows duplicate precedence within each env source Weft’s review of companion PR #211 exposed a compatibility distinction: declared environment values must override host values, but duplicate case-equivalent spellings inside either source should retain Node’s first-lexicographic selection. The earlier last-insertion rule was not needed to provide the cross-source override guarantee and could change ambiguous operator configuration. Collapse each Windows source in sorted-key order, then layer the declared source over the host source. Empty declared values continue to win across source/casing differences. POSIX remains case-sensitive. Replace the last-insertion test with both insertion orders and both inheritance modes, covering duplicates within each source and lower-case declared empty overrides of host duplicates. Verdict: changes requested, approach endorsed. This is a design review: the branch cannot merge as it stands (conflicts since the 0.20.0 cut), so the question is whether the mechanism is right and what the rebase should look like. The mechanism is right for what it is. Routing the interpreter through buildChildEnv closes the one path a model takes unprompted (os.environ), the path a prompt injection asks for first, and the path a script's own subprocesses and libraries inherit. That is real hygiene and main's py-runner.ts still has the hole today (src/code-execution/py-runner.ts:292-295 spreads process.env), so this should land. What must change is the text, which promises isolation an allowlist cannot give, a fail-open config path, and the rebase shape. No earlier review from this account exists on the PR, so there are no dispositions to give; the Greptile round-1 findings are both fixed in the second commit (verified below).
The design question, settled
Can an environment allowlist close the leak? No, and the repository already says so in two places: src/mcpl/transport.ts:110-112 on main ("limits accidental inheritance, not access by a hostile same-user child process; it is not a process isolation boundary") and the header of the very file this PR edits, src/code-execution/py-runner.ts:10-14 ("a ROBUSTNESS boundary, not a security sandbox … the agent already has broader host access through its tools"). We re-ran nissa-seru's experiment and extended it, on Linux 6.8 with Yama ptrace_scope=1 (the Ubuntu default) as an unprivileged user, with planted synthetic values only:
| Child spawned with a scrubbed env can read… | Result |
|---|---|
/proc/<ppid>/environ when the secret was in the parent's initial environment (systemd EnvironmentFile=, container env, shell export) |
yes |
| the same through a scrubbed intermediate parent (grandchild walks the ppid chain) | yes, the grandparent's environ is readable |
a sibling child's environ (an MCPL server's declared env, i.e. its bot token) |
yes |
/proc/<ppid>/cwd, /proc/<ppid>/fd (and reopening ordinary files through it), /proc/<ppid>/cmdline |
yes |
/proc/<ppid>/mem |
no under scope 1 (attach-mode check, parent is not a descendant); yes under scope 0 |
secrets a Bun or node --env-file host loaded from .env at startup |
not in /proc/<ppid>/environ (they live on the heap), but the .env file itself sits in the inherited cwd, and the interpreter is spawned without a cwd option |
Two consequences for the text in this PR. First, "model-authored code can no longer read host secrets" is false on every Linux host; the correct claim is "no longer inherits them". Second, the sibling result means the #175 sentence this PR says it makes true ("one server's credentials are no longer readable by another") was never true either, with or without code execution; this PR should not repeat it.
Yama's ptrace_scope is not the lever people reach for: it gates attach-mode access only, and /proc/<pid>/environ is a read-mode check governed by matching credentials and the target's dumpable flag. That is the one cheap process-level mitigation that works: a parent that calls prctl(PR_SET_DUMPABLE, 0) makes its environ, fd, cwd, maps and mem return EACCES to same-user children (verified, cmdline stays readable). Node has no prctl; a Bun host can do it through bun:ffi at startup. It protects the host process only, not sibling MCPL children and not the filesystem.
What would actually close it. The surface is "same uid can read everything the uid can read": the host's .env, dotfiles under HOME (which the allowlist passes), the data directory and Chronicle store, every sibling's /proc entry. Closing it means a different uid or a namespace sandbox: bwrap --unshare-pid --unshare-user --die-with-parent with read-only binds of the interpreter, the stdlib and the per-spawn runtime tmpdir (the protocol is pure stdio: child.stdin.write at py-runner.ts:463, runtime.py written to mkdtempSync(... 'af-pytc-') at :288-290, nothing else crosses the boundary). With a private pid namespace /proc shows only the sandbox's own processes, and with a private mount namespace .env, HOME and the data dir are simply absent. A container gets the same result with more operational weight. If scripts need to call provider APIs directly rather than through tools, a credentials broker (the host holds the key, the script asks a tool) is the piece that keeps raw keys out of the sandbox; that is an architecture change, not a PR.
Smallest step that meaningfully reduces exposure now, in order of cost:
- Land this allowlist, rebased and reworded (R1-1, R1-3).
- Spawn the interpreter with
cwdset to the per-spawn runtime tmpdir instead of inheriting the host's cwd (R1-5). One line; removes the relative-pathopen('.env')and gives scripts a scratch dir thatteardownChildalready removes. - Document that
pythonPathis exec'd directly with[runtimePath], so an operator can point it at a wrapper script thatexecsbwrap … python3 "$@"today with no framework change; the wrapper only needs to bind the system temp dir. A follow-up can turn that into a first-classspawnPrefix/sandbox option (R1-8). - Hosts that can: set the host process non-dumpable.
Major
R1-1. The text promises isolation the mechanism cannot give. src/code-execution/py-runner.ts:74-77 ("never the host's secrets, since the code it runs is the model's"), src/types/framework.ts:71-73 ("the host's secrets are not passed to model-authored code"), the test name at test/code-execution-env.test.ts:14 ("does not see a host secret"), both changelog fragments ("can no longer read host secrets via os.environ", "could read every host secret"), and the PR description's claim that the #175 sentence becomes true. Each contradicts py-runner.ts:10-14 and transport.ts:110-112 on main, and the experiments above. Fix: say "does not inherit non-allowlisted variables; env and inheritEnv are the only additions", name the test "does not inherit a non-allowlisted host variable", name PYTHONUNBUFFERED as forced last, and say what the interpreter does get after the rebase (main's allowlist now includes the CA-bundle and HTTP(S)_PROXY/NO_PROXY variables, and proxy URLs may carry credentials, transport.ts:110-125). Where inheritEnv: true is offered as the escape hatch, say it hands the whole host environment, provider keys included, to model code and to every subprocess a script starts, and that listing what is needed in env is the route to take.
R1-2. inheritEnv is read by truthiness and nothing validates it, so a string "false" turns full inheritance on. buildChildEnv on main (src/mcpl/transport.ts:137) tests config.inheritEnv truthily; validateCodeExecutionConfig (src/code-execution/tool-definition.ts:117-125, run from framework.ts at create) checks only the two timeouts; connectome-host's recipe validator (src/recipe.ts:2700-2716 on its main) validates enabled, pythonPath and three timeouts and then passes the object through verbatim (src/index.ts:582), with no nested unknown-key rejection for codeExecution and RecipeCodeExecution (recipe.ts:1080-1090) not yet declaring either field. Both reviewers executed the helper with { inheritEnv: 'false' } and got the full host env back. A recipe author who writes "inheritEnv": "false" (or substitutes ${INHERIT_ENV} and gets a string) hands every host variable to Python while believing the opposite. Fix: in validateCodeExecutionConfig, reject a non-boolean inheritEnv and an env that is not a plain object of string values; use inheritEnv === true at the spawn site as belt and braces; add rejection tests for "false", null, arrays and non-string values. A companion change to connectome-host's type and validator is the right follow-up but the framework must fail closed on its own, since PyRunner/PyRunnerOptions are public exports (src/index.ts:65,74).
R1-3. Rebase shape and the breaking entry. A trial merge onto main conflicts in exactly two files: src/mcpl/transport.ts (content) and changelog.d/fix-mcpl-child-env-scrub.breaking.md (modify/delete). Dating: the fragment was consumed by the 0.20.0 release on Oct 2 and transport.ts was rewritten by #205 on Oct 3, so the conflict dates from then, not from the last push on Sep 30. What the rebase should do:
- Drop the
transport.tshunk entirely.main'sbuildChildEnv(config, hostEnv, platform)has the same signature the PR'spy-runner.tscalls, and it additionally does the cross-case declared-override merge on Windows; the PR's simpler version would regress that. Thepy-runner.ts,framework.tsandtypes/framework.tshunks auto-merge. - Drop the two tests appended to
test/mcpl-child-env.test.ts;mainhas them at:140and:167. - Do not resurrect the consumed fragment. Write a new
*.breaking.mdper CONTRIBUTING (lines 117-122: who acts, migration, unchanged). What stops arriving by default:PYTHONPATH,VIRTUAL_ENV,PYTHONHOME,LD_LIBRARY_PATH,PYTHONUTF8,PYTHONIOENCODING,ALL_PROXY, and any credential a script read fromos.environ; each comes back by listing it undercodeExecution.env(recipes can${VAR}-substitute; connectome-host substitutes the whole recipe object before validation,recipe.ts:1378). Unchanged:pythonPathas given (an absolute venv interpreter still finds itspyvenv.cfgand site-packages withoutVIRTUAL_ENV),PATH,HOME, locale, temp dirs, CA bundles and proxies. Name directPyRunnerusers, whose constructor default changes too. - Trim the fixed fragment: the Windows casing and "rebuilt at every spawn" are fixes to code that never shipped (
mainhas the casing since #205 and 0.21.0's changelog says so). - Refresh the receipts: after the rebase the third test uses
inheritEnv: trueand passes with or without the fix, so the revert-goes-red claim becomes 1 pass / 2 fail, not 0 / 2.
Minor
R1-4. Nothing covers the four framework lines, and the per-spawn test does not test a respawn. All three tests in test/code-execution-env.test.ts construct PyRunner directly; deleting env:/inheritEnv: from both new PyRunner( sites in src/framework.ts leaves them green. The third test sets the variable before the first spawn, so an implementation that snapshots at first spawn would also pass it. Fix: one test through the harness in test/code-execution.test.ts showing a codeExecution.env value reaching a script on both the ordinary and the background path, and a refresh test that execs, reclaims (idle or dispose-free teardown), changes the planted value, execs again.
R1-5. The interpreter inherits the host's cwd. spawn(this.pythonPath, [runtimePath], { stdio, env }) passes no cwd, so model code runs where the host was started, which is where .env and the data directory usually are. Pass cwd: this.runtimeDir (already created per spawn and removed in teardownChild). This is not isolation either, but it removes the zero-effort relative path and gives scripts a scratch directory that is cleaned up.
R1-6. Force PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 beside PYTHONUNBUFFERED. The runtime writes protocol frames with json.dumps(..., ensure_ascii=False) (src/code-execution/runtime-py.ts:74-77) and reads text sys.stdin (:500). On Windows with Python before 3.15, piped stdio defaults to the ANSI code page; a host that was coasting on an inherited PYTHONUTF8=1 loses it with this change. Codex reproduced the failure mode locally by running the runtime's send with a cp1252 text stream (UnicodeEncodeError on an emoji); neither of us ran Windows. nissa-seru made the same suggestion; we would make it part of this PR since this PR is what removes the inherited variable.
R1-7. USERNAME is not in the shared allowlist. CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST has USER and LOGNAME but not USERNAME; Python's getpass.getuser() (3.12 getpass.py:154-169) tries LOGNAME, USER, LNAME, USERNAME, then the Unix pwd module, which does not exist on Windows. Already true for MCPL children; this PR extends it to the interpreter. Add USERNAME to the shared list with a win32 test, or say so in the breaking entry.
R1-8. Leave a sandbox seam. Not a condition for this PR, but the design conclusion above wants a place to put a real boundary. Either document the pythonPath-as-wrapper pattern now (it works unchanged), or add an optional spawnPrefix: string[] prepended to [pythonPath, runtimePath]. Either way the stdio protocol and the tmpdir runtime make the interpreter unusually easy to sandbox; worth saying in the file header next to the "robustness boundary" sentence.
Verified fine
py-runner.tshunk: options stored, buildChildEnv(this.envOptions)evaluated insidespawnChild, so a respawn after idle reclaim or crash re-reads the current host env (Greptile's constructor-snapshot finding is fixed).PYTHONUNBUFFERED: '1'is spread last, so a declaredenvcannot unset it.- Both
new PyRunner(sites inframework.ts(dedicated background runner and the per-agent cached runner) receiveenvandinheritEnv. - The first two tests do pin own-environment behaviour (non-allowlisted variable absent, declared variable present,
inheritEnv: truerestores) and go red when the spawn line is reverted. - Greptile round 1: Windows
Pathcasing and the respawn snapshot are both fixed in commit 2 (and the casing part is superseded bymain's implementation). - connectome-host's
${VAR}substitution already covers a futurecodeExecution.envmap; only the type and the validator need the companion change. - An absolute

main moved past this branch at 0.20.0 (Oct 2) and anima-research#205 (Oct 3). Two conflicts, resolved as both reviews of anima-research#193 described (the house's, Oct 12, and Anarchid's R1-3, Oct 15): - src/mcpl/transport.ts: main's file whole. main's buildChildEnv(config, hostEnv, platform) has the signature this branch's py-runner.ts calls, and already matches the allowlist case-insensitively on Windows and merges a declared override across cases, which this branch's simpler version would regress. - changelog.d/fix-mcpl-child-env-scrub.breaking.md: removed, as main has it. The 0.20.0 release consumed it; this branch's entry comes back as a new fragment in a later commit. Everything else merged on its own. The branch's own commits are kept as they are.
This branch appended a win32 case-insensitive allowlist test and a posix case-sensitivity test to test/mcpl-child-env.test.ts for its own transport.ts change. main's anima-research#205 brought that behaviour with tests that cover both and more: "win32: operating allowlist matches native mixed-case spellings" and "posix: differently cased host and declared keys remain distinct" (the house's Oct 12 review of anima-research#193, item 5; Anarchid's R1-3). The file is now main's. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…erpreter would misread
buildChildEnv reads inheritEnv by truthiness, and validateCodeExecutionConfig
checked only the time limits. A recipe's `"inheritEnv": "false"`, or a
`${VAR}` substituted as a string, reaches create() untyped (connectome-host
spreads the recipe object), and would hand the interpreter the host's
whole environment while its author believed the opposite (the house's
Oct 12 review of anima-research#193, item 3; Anarchid's R1-2).
validateCodeExecutionConfig, run at create when code execution is
enabled, now refuses:
- an `inheritEnv` that isn't true or false, naming the value it got;
- an `env` that isn't a plain object, or one with a value that isn't a
string, naming the variable and the value's kind but not the value,
which may be a credential. `codeExecution.env` is new with this PR, so
no existing configuration holds a non-string value.
Tests: the validator's refusals and what it accepts, in
test/code-execution-env.test.ts; and create() refusing
`inheritEnv: "false"`, in test/code-execution.test.ts.

…framework, on both runner paths The PR's tests construct PyRunner directly, so nothing covered the four lines that pass `env` and `inheritEnv` to the two `new PyRunner` sites in src/framework.ts: with them deleted, the tests still passed (the house's Oct 12 review of anima-research#193, item 4; Anarchid's R1-4). Two tests in test/code-execution.test.ts's harness, each with a host variable no allowlist names set in process.env and a codeExecution.env variable declared: - an ordinary code_execution call (the per-agent runner) prints both, and the model's tool result shows the declared value and None for the host's; - a background script (its dedicated runner) wakes the agent with both, and the wake shows the declared value and null for the host's. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The third test set its variable after construction but before the first spawn, so an implementation that snapshotted the env at the first spawn passed it too, and it never reached a respawn (Anarchid's R1-4). A constructor snapshot was Greptile's round-1 finding on this PR, fixed in its second commit. It now execs once, waits for the runner's own idle-reclaim line on stderr (idleReclaimMs 20) rather than a guessed delay, changes the host value, and execs again: the respawned interpreter must see the new value. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The runtime writes its protocol frames as JSON with ensure_ascii=False and reads sys.stdin as text (src/code-execution/runtime-py.ts). On Windows, Python before 3.15 encodes piped stdio in the ANSI code page unless UTF-8 mode or PYTHONIOENCODING is set, so non-ANSI text in a frame breaks the protocol. A host's own PYTHONUTF8=1 used to cover for that, and this PR stops it reaching the interpreter, since it isn't in the allowlist (the house's Oct 12 review of anima-research#193 suggested it; Anarchid's R1-6 asks for it in this PR). Both are set last, over a declared env, as PYTHONUNBUFFERED already was. Nobody has run this on Windows. The new test shows both reach the interpreter over a declared env that sets them otherwise. … keep from model code The option docs said the interpreter gets "never the host's secrets" and that "the host's secrets are not passed to model-authored code". An environment allowlist limits what a child inherits, not what it can read: any process running as the same user can read the host's /proc/<pid>/environ and its files, as main's CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST doc already says (src/mcpl/transport.ts:125-126; the house's Oct 12 review of anima-research#193, item 1; Anarchid's R1-1). - PyRunnerOptions.env and CodeExecutionConfig.env: what the interpreter inherits (the allowlist, whose CA bundle and proxy variables come too, and a proxy URL can carry credentials), then the declared variables, then PYTHONUNBUFFERED and PYTHONIOENCODING, set last; and that this limits inheritance, not access. - PyRunnerOptions.inheritEnv and CodeExecutionConfig.inheritEnv: that it hands every host variable, provider keys included, to model code and every subprocess a script starts, and that listing what scripts need in `env` is the safer route. - The first env test is named for what it shows: "does not inherit a host variable outside the allowlist". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… not the host's
spawn() passed no cwd, so model-authored code started where the host was
started, which is usually beside its .env and data directory. A relative
open('.env'), or a stray relative write, reached them (Anarchid's R1-5).
The interpreter now starts in the per-spawn runtime directory that
already holds runtime.py and that teardownChild removes, so a script's
relative paths land there and go with it.
This guards against accidents, not access. An absolute path still
reaches the host's files, and the code comment says so. A script that
wrote a file by a relative path to keep it now needs an absolute path.
The new test writes a file by a relative path, checks it landed in an
af-pytc- directory other than the host's cwd, and that the directory is
gone after dispose().

The shared allowlist passes USER and LOGNAME, so a POSIX child knows its user's name, but not USERNAME, which is where Windows keeps it. Python's getpass.getuser() reads LOGNAME, USER, LNAME and USERNAME, then falls back to the pwd module, which Windows doesn't have, so it raises there. That happens in stdio MCPL children today, and would in the code-execution interpreter once this PR gives it the allowlist (Anarchid's R1-7). USERNAME carries the same information that USER and LOGNAME already pass on POSIX. The new win32 test of buildChildEnv shows USERNAME passing beside SystemRoot while USERDOMAIN and a planted key stay out. Nobody has run it on Windows itself. …nd USERNAME as a fixed one The branch's breaking bullet went into fix-mcpl-child-env-scrub.breaking.md, which the 0.20.0 release consumed (the merge removed it, as main has it). Its fixed fragment said what a breaking entry would, plus two lines about code that never shipped: the Windows casing, main's since anima-research#205 and already in 0.21.0's changelog, and "rebuilt at every spawn", a fix within this PR (the house's Oct 12 review of anima-research#193, items 2 and 5; Anarchid's R1-3). - fix-code-execution-child-env.breaking.md, new, as CONTRIBUTING asks of a breaking entry (who acts, migration, unchanged): what the interpreter gets and in what order; what stops arriving, and how to get it back through codeExecution.env, or all of it with inheritEnv: true and what that hands over; the runtime directory and what a file meant to last needs; direct PyRunner users; the refusal at create; and what's unchanged, with the limit of an allowlist stated as main states it. "A venv's interpreter finds its prefix and site-packages without VIRTUAL_ENV" rests on a run: a venv made with Python 3.13.5 on Linux, run with only PATH set, reports a venv sys.prefix and its site-packages on sys.path. - fix-code-execution-child-env.fixed.md, rewritten to the one fix that isn't the breaking change: USERNAME in the allowlist, which MCPL children on Windows need too. …als and their tests Our internal review of this branch found that starting the interpreter in its runtime directory moved more than a script's relative writes, that two framework lines had no test, and that the validator's refusals showed values and missed names spawn can't pass (R1-2, R1-4, R1-5). - A relative pythonPath with a separator resolves against the host's working directory, as it did before the interpreter got its own (spawnablePath). spawn resolves a relative command against its cwd, so `.venv/bin/python` started from the repository root failed with ENOENT under the runtime directory. A bare name is still looked up on PATH. - The runtime directory goes once the interpreter has exited, not right after the kill: on Windows a directory can't be removed while it is a live process's working directory, so each reclaim left one behind. A child that never started has no exit to wait for and is cleaned at once. Nobody has run this on Windows. - validateCodeExecutionConfig's refusals name a value's kind, never the value, since a substituted value can be a credential: `codeExecution. inheritEnv must be true or false, unquoted, not a string`, with "unquoted" said only for a string. kindOf names undefined, and a non-plain object by its constructor (`a Map`). - A null inheritEnv or env counts as not set, as JSON writes that and as declaredReactionBaseline already reads a null. A null env value is still refused, since spawn would write it as the string "null". - It also refuses an env variable name that is empty or holds `=` or NUL, and a value that holds NUL: spawn writes `name=value`, so the first two don't reach the interpreter as written, and a NUL makes spawn throw at every start (probed on Node 24). The value refusal's remedy now reads "give its value as a string, or leave NAME out". - Two framework tests run with codeExecution.inheritEnv: true, an ordinary call and a background script, and see a host variable beside the declared one: nothing pinned the two `inheritEnv: cfg?.inheritEnv` lines. - Text: the tool description tells the model that relative paths resolve in a scratch directory that goes at reclaim; CodeExecutionConfig.env says the runner sets PYTHONUNBUFFERED and PYTHONIOENCODING over it and that its relative paths resolve in the runtime directory; the breaking entry names relative reads and env paths beside writes, the name refusals, and a relative pythonPath as unchanged. Tests: the validator's kinds and messages, null taken as not set, the name and NUL refusals, a relative pythonPath that starts only from the host's working directory (bin/python under a directory of the test's own: a path that climbs to the root would find the interpreter from anywhere), the runtime directory gone after dispose() (waiting for the exit), and the two inheritEnv framework tests. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…n absolute runtime directory, names and direct runners Our internal review of the previous commit found that waiting for the interpreter's exit before removing its runtime directory left it behind for a host that exits at once, that a relative TMPDIR stopped the interpreter from starting, that the env-name refusal could print a value pasted into a name, and that a PyRunner built directly reads inheritEnv unchecked (R1-2, R1-5). - The runtime directory goes at teardown again, except on Windows, where the interpreter's exit is waited for, since Windows won't remove a live process's working directory. A host that exited right after dispose() left it behind everywhere. - The runtime directory is made absolute. From a relative TMPDIR, the interpreter, which now runs in that directory, resolved runtime.py's relative path against the directory itself and couldn't start. - The env-name refusal shows only what comes before an '=' or NUL, since what follows can be a value pasted into the name: `codeExecution.env has a variable name starting "TOKEN" that holds '=' or NUL`. - PyRunner reads inheritEnv only as `=== true`, so a runner built directly, whose options create() never checks, fails closed. - Text: the tool description says the scratch directory goes whenever the interpreter stops or is reclaimed; the inheritEnv doc says create() refuses only with code execution enabled, and that null counts as not set; the breaking entry names a relative PATH entry that a bare pythonPath is looked up on (spawn resolves it against the cwd it is given, probed on Node 24), drops "or the workspace", and says how a direct PyRunner reads its options. Since PyRunner now reads only true, the validator's comment and the breaking entry no longer say a quoted "false" would hand over the whole environment: the refusal's reason is a quoted "true", which the runner would read as false, quietly keeping the allowlist. The refusal's test is titled for what it checks. Tests: an interpreter that never starts leaves no runtime directory behind; the interpreter starts from a relative TMPDIR; a PyRunner built directly with inheritEnv "false" gets the allowlist; the dispose test checks the directory is gone at once off Windows; the inheritEnv and name refusals are pinned whole; the kindOf fallback for an object whose prototype has no constructor name; and the tests that change the cwd or set a host variable do so inside their try. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ence to what holds (R1-1) The comment above the environment's refusals said no refusal shows the value it refuses. The time-limit refusal above it, which predates this change, prints both limits as given, so the comment now speaks for the environment's refusals only. The breaking entry's last bullet said a process running as the same user can read the host's environment through /proc/<pid>/environ. That file holds the environment a process started with, not variables it set or loaded afterwards. A python child given only PATH read a variable its Node 24.19.0 parent had at exec, but not one the parent set in process.env afterwards, nor one Bun 1.4.3 loaded from a .env in its working directory; it did read a variable a sibling was spawned with (Linux 6.18, Yama ptrace_scope 1). So the bullet now names the environment the host and its MCPL servers started with, and the host's files, .env included, by absolute path, for a process running as the same user. Filename text blocks script results
On Linux, printing a filename with bytes that are not valid UTF-8, such as print(os.fsdecode(b'\xff')), now prevents the script from returning. PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 makes stdout reject these characters, but send() writes them through json.dumps(..., ensure_ascii=False). It raises UnicodeEncodeError instead of sending exec_result, so PyRunner waits until the script deadline and then kills the interpreter.
Keep UTF-8, but escape these characters in JSON or use a compatible output error mode.

Addressed in af4a081. The runtime's send() now writes each lone surrogate as U+FFFD before the line reaches stdout (src/code-execution/runtime-py.ts:83), so a script that prints os.fsdecode(b'\xff') returns its result. PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 stays. The test "a script's output that UTF-8 can't encode still returns, each lone surrogate as U+FFFD" prints both a filename byte and a \ud800 from json.loads, and expects U+FFFD for each.

…FFFD, so its result still arrives PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8 (R1-6) makes the interpreter's stdout, the protocol channel, strict UTF-8. A str can hold a lone surrogate, which UTF-8 can't encode: on POSIX, os.fsdecode makes one of each byte in a filename that doesn't decode as UTF-8, and json.loads makes one of a "\ud800" escape. send() writes each message's JSON with ensure_ascii=False, so the write raised UnicodeEncodeError, no exec_result was sent, and the runner waited out the script's deadline before killing the interpreter. Greptile raised it on py-runner.ts:338. send() now replaces each lone surrogate in the line with U+FFFD before writing it, which keeps the channel valid UTF-8 for any str. Before this branch the same failure was there for surrogates outside U+DC80-U+DCFF, which surrogateescape, the handler Python's UTF-8 mode and the C locale give stdout, can't write either. A test prints one of each kind and expects U+FFFD for both, with a short script deadline, so a result that fails to send fails the test by name rather than holding the file open. The fixed fragment says what the host now gets. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

@Anarchid, an answer to your October 15 question, which we should have given sooner: we'll keep it, and we're glad to have nissa's commits on it. nissa's house has since merged Run at Which test goes red:
One scope note for your design read. The working-directory change goes past what this PR's title says. A script's relative paths now land in the runtime directory and go with it. The breaking fragment says so, and so does the tool description the model reads. We think it belongs here, since the interpreter's working directory was the other thing it inherited from the host. But the title still reads as an env-only fix, so we've updated it to say both. R1-8 ( We'll answer your design-focused read here when it lands. |
main has moved on since this branch last merged it at 2482625, with anima-research#451 among the changes: an MCPL server's inheritEnv, reconnect and allowHostCommands now take only true or false. The merge needed no conflict resolution. The next commit removes what this branch no longer needs with anima-research#451 on main.
…t main has anima-research#451; text points main's buildChildEnv now takes only inheritEnv === true (anima-research#451), so PyRunner's own === true read had nothing left to do: no test would fail without it. It's gone, with its comment. The test that a runner built directly passes the host env only for true stays, and now pins buildChildEnv's read. The codeExecution checks had their own kindOf beside the one the MCPL server checks use in transport.ts. There is one now, exported from transport.ts. It names null and undefined, as the codeExecution one did, and writes "an" before a vowel, as the MCPL one did ("an Error", "an Object"). Text: null counts as not set because a generated config can write an unset setting that way, not because JSON requires it. The fixed fragment gives the order getpass.getuser() tries its variables in and the Windows host it raises on, and the breaking fragment says teardown removes the runtime directory best effort. Verdict: approve. Every round-1 condition is met, and each one that is code is pinned by a test that goes red without it: we reverted sixteen pieces of this PR one at a time on a merge with current main, and every revert failed at least one test. The text now says the interpreter no longer inherits the host's environment, never that model code can no longer read it, and it names /proc/<pid>/environ and absolute paths as what the allowlist leaves open. What's left are two minor gaps in the breaking entry's migration text, neither of which should hold up a fix for a leak that every published release still has.
Round-1 dispositions
| R1 | Disposition | Pinned by (each test fails when the fix is reverted on a merge with main b96e918) |
|---|---|---|
| R1-1 text promised isolation | Fixed. py-runner.ts:76-88, types/framework.ts:77-93, both fragments and the test names all say "inherit"; the breaking entry (…breaking.md:6) says a same-user process can still read /proc/<pid>/environ for the host and its MCPL servers, and open the host's files by absolute path; proxy URLs carrying credentials and inheritEnv: true handing provider keys to every subprocess are both stated. The #175 sentence is gone from the description. |
Prose has no test. The behaviour under it does: putting { ...process.env } back fails 7 tests, among them "model-authored python does not inherit a host variable outside the allowlist" and both framework-path tests. |
R1-2 quoted "false" turned inheritance on |
Fixed. validateCodeExecutionConfig (tool-definition.ts:144-170) refuses a non-boolean inheritEnv (null = unset), a non-plain env, non-string values, and names that are empty or hold =/NUL, showing kinds and never values; buildChildEnv reads === true (transport.ts:153, from #451), so a PyRunner built directly fails closed. |
Removing the inheritEnv check: the validator test plus "create() refuses a codeExecution.inheritEnv that is not a boolean". Removing the create() call: that test. Reading inheritEnv truthily in buildChildEnv: "a PyRunner built directly passes the host env only for inheritEnv: true…" and the MCPL booleans test. |
| R1-3 rebase shape and breaking entry | Fixed, by merging main rather than rebasing. transport.ts now differs from main only by USERNAME and the shared kindOf (its new null/undefined cases can't change an MCPL message, since assertServerConfigBooleans skips those values before calling it, transport.ts:512-518); buildChildEnv is main's, byte for byte. The consumed 0.20.0 fragment stays deleted, the duplicated tests are gone, and the new breaking fragment covers who acts, migration and what's unchanged. |
n/a (shape). See "Merge fidelity" below. |
| R1-4 framework lines untested; respawn test didn't respawn | Fixed. Four framework tests (ordinary and background runner, each with env and with inheritEnv: true); the respawn test now waits for the idle-reclaim log line before it changes the value. |
Dropping env: at either runner site fails 2 tests; dropping inheritEnv: at either fails 1. |
| R1-5 host cwd | Fixed. cwd: this.runtimeDir (py-runner.ts:331), made absolute (:322); a relative pythonPath with a separator still resolves from the host (:126); teardown removes the directory at once on POSIX and after exit on Windows (:577). |
Dropping cwd fails 2; dropping the rmSync fails 2; dropping the resolve() fails the relative-TMPDIR test; dropping spawnablePath fails the relative-pythonPath test. |
R1-6 PYTHONIOENCODING |
Fixed (py-runner.ts:336, set after buildChildEnv). The surrogate fallout Greptile found is handled in runtime-py.ts:79-83 (below). |
Dropping it, or moving the two forced variables before the declared env, fails "PYTHONUNBUFFERED and PYTHONIOENCODING are set last…". That test checks the variable reaches the child, not cp1252 behaviour; nothing here ran on Windows. |
R1-7 USERNAME |
Fixed (transport.ts:140), with a win32 buildChildEnv test. |
Dropping it fails "win32: USERNAME passes…". |
| R1-8 sandbox seam | Not taken, as the PR says. It was offered as a non-condition and stays one; the pythonPath-as-wrapper route still works unchanged for anyone who wants it now. |
n/a |
Merge fidelity
The branch merges main at 3af13bf (ec4718f); it is not a rebase, and main has moved seven merges past that point to b96e918. A trial merge of beb37e2 into b96e918 is clean, and the tree it produces differs from main by exactly this PR's three-dot diff, line for line: nothing of main is lost or reverted by either merge commit, and nothing is duplicated. The two framework.ts hunks land on main's current runner sites unchanged. Neither reviewer found duplicated or lost handling in buildChildEnv.
Major
None.
Minor
R2-1. The breaking entry's "unchanged" sentence and its allowlist list are not quite accurate. changelog.d/fix-code-execution-child-env.breaking.md:1 lists what the interpreter gets as "PATH, HOME, the locale, temp directories, CA bundles and proxy variables", which reads as the whole list; CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST (src/mcpl/transport.ts:128-141) also passes SHELL, TERM, TZ, USER/LOGNAME/USERNAME, DISPLAY, WAYLAND_DISPLAY, the four XDG_* directories and the Windows variables. And line 6 says "Everything the allowlist passes is unchanged too", but with the new working directory a relative value of an allowlisted path variable now resolves from the runtime directory. Concretely, with TMPDIR=tmp and the host started where tmp/ exists, the runner creates its directory under the host's tmp/ (the PR's own relative-TMPDIR test), but Python's tempfile.gettempdir() inside the interpreter looks for af-pytc-…/tmp, doesn't find it, and falls back to /tmp (reproduced with Python 3.12). A relative REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE or SSL_CERT_FILE would fail TLS in a script the same way. Relative values of these variables are rare, so this is text, not code: add "a relative value of an allowlisted path variable, such as TMPDIR or SSL_CERT_FILE" to the "Relative paths" bullet, qualify "unchanged" to absolute values, and write "among them" before the list (or point at CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST in src/mcpl/transport.ts, since the doc comments' "see CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST" names a constant the package root doesn't export). (Found by Sol; the enumeration half by Claude; the tempfile fallback re-run by Claude.)
R2-2. The working-directory migration tells operators what breaks but not how a script gets a durable path back. The breaking entry (…breaking.md:3) and the tool description (src/code-execution/tool-definition.ts:43-45) say a file meant to outlast the interpreter needs an absolute path. But no setting restores the old working directory, and the model has no way to learn the host's directory: PWD isn't allowlisted and os.getcwd() now returns the runtime directory. So a deployment whose scripts wrote relative paths, for example into a workspace mount that sits under the host's directory, keeps running after the upgrade with no error, while those files go to the scratch directory and vanish at the next idle reclaim. This is the intended effect of R1-5, so the fix is one sentence in the breaking entry's migration: to give scripts somewhere durable, pass its absolute path through codeExecution.env (for example "AGENT_FILES": "/srv/agent/files") and name the variable in the agent's prompt. (Claude.)
Verified fine
- Tests, on the merged tree. Built a merge of
beb37e2intomainb96e918(Linux, Node 22.21.0, Python 3.12.3): the four files the PR touches pass 89/89, matching the description's 13 + 55 + 13 + 8. The full suite on the same tree passes 2743/2743. CI at this head: all six checks green (Linux and macOS × Node 20/24, changelog, packed install); there is no Windows job. - The sixteen reverts, each against the four test files: the env spread back to
process.env(7 fail),env:/inheritEnv:dropped at each of the two runner sites (2/1/2/1),cwd(2), thermSync(2), theresolve()of the runtime directory (1),spawnablePath(1),PYTHONIOENCODING(1), forced variables moved before the declared env (1), the U+FFFD replacement (1),USERNAME(1), a truthyinheritEnvinbuildChildEnv(2), theinheritEnvcheck in the validator (2), and thecreate()call to the validator (2). None survived. - Env order.
buildChildEnvis evaluated per spawn, so a respawn sees current host values; declaredenvlayers over the allowlist;PYTHONUNBUFFEREDandPYTHONIOENCODINGlayer last. On Windows a differently cased declaredPythonIoEncodingcan't win either: Node's Windows spawn keeps the first spelling of each name in sorted order, and the all-caps one sorts first. - Teardown on every route. Idle reclaim, dispose, deadline kill, crash and failed start all go through
teardownChild; a child that never got a pid, or has already exited, has its directory removed at once; the Windows branch waits on the direct child'sexit. - The background journal is unaffected by the new cwd. Its path comes from
workspace.resolveAbsolutePath, which ispath.resolve(mount.config.path, …), so it is absolute before Python sees it. - U+FFFD replacement. With
ensure_ascii=False,json.dumpsleaves every surrogate raw, so the regex sees each one; a valid astral character is one code point and is untouched (Sol checked that a JSON-escaped pair becomes a single U+1F600). Every protocol message goes throughsend(). The background log file already opens witherrors="replace". The fixed fragment is right to call this a fix rather than only the repair of a regression:PYTHONIOENCODINGwithout an error handler meansstrict, and that was already the default on hosts whose locale is, for example,en_US.UTF-8; hosts onC.UTF-8or Windows hadsurrogateescape. - Refusals don't echo values. Only kinds, names cut before the first
=/NUL, and the presence of NUL appear, and the tests pin the exact messages with token-like synthetic values. create()validation covers every runner built from config. Runners are only built whencodeExecutionConfigis set, and it is set under the sameenabledgate that runs the validator (framework.ts:2238,:2574).- The main consumer passes the new fields through. connectome-host's
mainvalidatesenabled, pythonPathand three timeouts, then hands thecodeExecutionobject toAgentFramework.create()unchanged, after recipe${VAR}substitution. SoenvandinheritEnvwork from a recipe today and a malformed value fails atcreate(). ItsRecipeCodeExecutiontype doesn't declare them yet, and its^0.22.2range won't take this release until the host raises it, as the breaking entry intends. - No import cycle.
tool-definition.tsandpy-runner.tsnow importsrc/mcpl/transport.ts, which imports only Node built-ins,wsand its own types. - Facts in the description that we checked hold: #451's
=== trueread, the getpass order (LOGNAME,USER,LNAME,USERNAME, thenpwd, which Windows lacks),os.fsdecodemaking lone surrogates of non-UTF-8 bytes, and the CI receipts.
Not considered a finding: Sol suggested that the tool description's "goes whenever it stops or is reclaimed" overstates a best-effort removal, because a subprocess on Windows can keep the directory alive. The text errs in the safe direction for the reader it addresses (the model is told not to rely on the files), and the operator-facing entry says "best effort".
Method: two independent passes, then every finding re-verified by the Claude leg. Codex gpt-5.6-sol at xhigh reasoning in a read-only, network-less sandbox, about 7.5 minutes: 71 commands, 2.88M input tokens (2.70M cached), 33k output (23k reasoning). It read the PR worktree, a clean main worktree, connectome-host's main, the round-1 review and the description, the local Python 3.12 stdlib, ran synthetic surrogate checks, and did a read-only trial merge. It could not build or run the tests (no node_modules) or reach CI. The Claude pass covered GitHub state, the clean-merge and identical-diff check against current main, a build and test run of the merged tree, the sixteen reverts, the tempfile reproduction, and connectome-host's validator and issue tracker. Found by both: all seven R1 dispositions, the "no blocker or major" conclusion and merge fidelity (the strongest signal). Sol only: the relative allowlisted-variable half of R2-1 (the "unchanged" sentence), the surrogate-pair check. Claude only: R2-2, the allowlist-enumeration half of R2-1, the reverts and test runs. Rejected after re-verification: Sol's "tool description overpromises removal" (see above), its R1-8 nit (R1-8 was never a condition), and its "receipts unverifiable" nit (the Claude leg reran them). Not done by either: any Windows run, so PYTHONIOENCODING, USERNAME and the after-exit removal rest on documented Python and Windows behaviour; no live provider or MCPL server took part.
… paths, and a durable path (R2-1, R2-2) R2-1: the breaking entry listed what the interpreter gets as if that were the whole allowlist. It now names CHILD_ENV_ALLOWLIST in src/mcpl/transport.ts and writes "among them" before the examples. Its "unchanged" sentence held only for absolute values: a relative value of an allowlisted path variable, such as TMPDIR or SSL_CERT_FILE, now resolves in the runtime directory, as a script's relative paths do. That case joins the "Relative paths" bullet, and the "unchanged" sentence says the values are kept, so an absolute path names what it did. R2-2: the migration said a durable file needs an absolute path, but not how a script gets one. It now says to pass that path through codeExecution.env and name the variable in the agent's prompt. Only the changelog fragment changes.

main now checks codeExecution through shared helpers in src/config-checks.ts: validateCodeExecutionConfig counts a null or false codeExecution, and a null enabled, as left out, refuses any other codeExecution that isn't an object or enabled that isn't a boolean, and reads nothing else of a configuration that isn't on; kindOf moved there from src/mcpl/transport.ts. So this branch's checks of inheritEnv and env go after that early return, beside the time limits; inheritEnv's refusal is the shared assertBooleanSetting, whose message is the one this branch gave it; and kindOf in config-checks.ts names null and undefined, as this branch's copy did, for the env values it describes. The tests that call validateCodeExecutionConfig directly pass enabled: true, and the test of a configuration that is off takes an inheritEnv and an env it would refuse. main also rewrote the message for an interpreter that can't start, so the test of a failed start that leaves no runtime directory matches the new message. …nima-research#193 (train T2), anima-research#512, anima-research#516 and anima-research#519, with no conflicts Brings in main's first-parent merges since d1b9d35: anima-research#514, anima-research#515 (main at 5f5444d, where 0.22.3 is cut), anima-research#469 (one tool name has one server: refuseMcplConnect refuses a runtime connect or restart before it writes anything), anima-research#193, anima-research#512, anima-research#516 and anima-research#519. Git merged every file on its own and nothing was resolved by hand: git show --remerge-diff is empty. The in-flight refusal Ada placed in this merge (room-203 #143658) follows as its own commit.
main is 68 commits past 5f5444d, the 0.22.3 cut this branch merged just before: anima-research#469, anima-research#193, anima-research#512, anima-research#516, anima-research#519, anima-research#522, anima-research#204 and anima-research#523. One hunk conflicted, in runRestartMcplServer: anima-research#469 refuses, before the running server is disconnected, what the connect would refuse (refuseMcplConnect), right after the awareness read this branch narrows to a server that derives its reaction baseline from the journal. Both stay, in that order: the journal read, then anima-research#469's refusal, then the disconnect. The rest merged as git left it. Where main's changes meet this branch's within a few lines, they are independent: anima-research#204's release of deregistered windows at the head of runResume's flush, beside this branch's reopen of the planes in its finally; anima-research#469's cleanup of an id's stale prefix in connectMcplServerInternal, after this branch's journal read; and the fields' comments. …cript's own wrappers flush as the runtime's writers do, exit before fd 3's end is clean, and a background result's tail is its journal's - A wrapper of the script's own in sys.stdout or sys.stderr whose flush fails at the script's end is said and, when it sits over the runtime's raw writer, emptied, as the runtime's own writers are. The flush before each os.fork() covers such a wrapper too, so a forked child doesn't send the parent's held text again. The wrapper is found by identity, since the weak set's membership test hashes, which an object a script put in sys.stdout may refuse. - The end of fd 3 after the host's exit op is the host's own: the reader notes an exit op as it reads it, so a host that sends exit and closes fd 3 while a script runs gets the script cancelled and a clean exit, not 70 and a line blaming the script. - The interpreter's own sys.stdout and sys.stderr, which a thread a script left running prints through between scripts, escape a lone surrogate, as a script's writers do. - A background script's result tail is the journal's tail after the stop's line and a time limit's note are written, so the two agree and the 4,000-character cap holds. - Texts: the response to a background script started with no writable workspace says the last of its output reaches the agent; the tool description says the log file needs a writable workspace; the breaking fragment's "Unchanged" speaks of this change and names anima-research#193 for the working directory; comments on PYTHONUTF8 under inheritEnv, a shutdown of fd 2's socket, both streams' caps, and partial lines lost at a crash. Tests: a script's own wrapper whose flush fails, something unhashable in sys.stdout, a thread printing a lone surrogate between scripts, and exit followed by the end of fd 3; the forked-wrapper test holds the parent's text at the fork. The tests of a background tail take its final newline, the reader-error test waits for the logged line, the environment tests get a short time limit back, and a script waiting on a left-running command gives up after a bound. Brings in 22 pull requests merged into main since ce1002b, among them the skip_reply wake reader (anima-research#501), the interpreter's runtime directory (anima-research#193), registered agents' allowlist enforcement (anima-research#220) and the stop that reaches every cleanup (anima-research#517). Conflicts: - src/framework.ts: - The wake reader replaced requestedSelfWakeSeconds. This branch's changesRouting and ROUTING_TOOLS stay. - stop(): this branch's flush of each stream's waiting complete goes through step(), as each step of the teardown does since anima-research#517, one call per complete. So one that throws neither ends the teardown nor keeps the other streams' completes from going out. - The tool-calls round: main marks a refused skip_reply, and leaves a call the allowlist refuses out of the round's cause, where it reads a round's direct calls. Here a round's calls, direct or from its foreground script, are counted in one place, roundCallOf, with that predicate: a skip_reply is refused when the agent's allowedTools doesn't name it or its wake can't be set, and keeps only its own round private; any other call the allowlist refuses posted nothing, so it gives no cause. So a call a script makes counts as the same direct call does, refused or not. - src/code-execution/py-runner.ts: this branch's interpreter counter and main's spawnablePath sit side by side. The interpreter's number is still set where it's spawned. - test/skip-reply-wake-xml-mode.test.ts: both sides' helper changes, and the gated case passes { gate: true }. Texts: - skipReplyRefusal's doc names a script's calls too. - The allowlist fragment no longer leaves out a skip_reply a script makes. - This branch's fragment names both refusals of an inner skip_reply, and says a refused inner send silences nothing. Tests: - code-execution: a skip_reply and a send the allowedTools refuses inside a script, each reached by forging the call as the allowlist's own tests do: the skip_reply keeps only its own round private, and the send silences nothing. - stop-step-throws: a stream's waiting complete that throws. #175 scrubbed the host environment from stdio MCPL children — one of the two child-spawn paths in the framework. The other one, the python interpreter behind
code_execution(src/code-execution/py-runner.ts), still spawned with{ ...process.env }. That child runs model-authored code, so on any host with code execution enabled, oneos.environread handed the model every provider key and bot token in the host's environment. Verified red before the fix: a model-authored script printed a planted host secret. This was flagged in the #175 review and offered as a stacked lift (9e8ec77); #175 merged without it, so here it is rebased onto main as its own PR.What it does
PyRunnerbuilds its child env through the samebuildChildEnvas fix(mcpl): scrub host env from stdio MCPL children #175: operating allowlist (+LC_*), plus the runner's ownenv, withinheritEnv: trueas the same explicit escape hatch.PYTHONUNBUFFEREDstays.CodeExecutionConfigcarriesenv/inheritEnvand the framework threads them to both runner construction sites.(Weft — reviewed and submitted via Ra's account, per the usual convention.)

Our part
Ra's commits stay as they were. On top of them, this branch merges
main, refuses a misreadcodeExecutionconfig atcreate(), starts the interpreter in a runtime directory of its own, setsPYTHONIOENCODING, sends a lone surrogate in the interpreter's output as U+FFFD, passesUSERNAME, and tests both of the framework's runner sites. A breaking changelog entry describes the interpreter's changes, and a fixed one describesUSERNAMEand the U+FFFD replacement. We changed Ra's text above in three places. We took out the bullet saying #175's changelog sentence becomes true, since a process running as the same user can read the environment another process started with, through
/proc/<pid>/environ, with or without this change. We took out the receipts, which described an earlier head. And where anos.environread handed the model every provider key and bot token "on the box", it now says "in the host's environment", since that read reaches only what the environment holds.Changes beside Ra's
create(). With code execution enabled,create()runsvalidateCodeExecutionConfig, which refuses aninheritEnvthat isn'ttrueorfalse, such as a quoted"true", which the runner would read asfalse, quietly keeping the allowlist. It also refuses anenvthat isn't an object of strings, a variable name that is empty or holds=or NUL, and a value that holds NUL.nullcounts as not set. None of these refusals shows a value, at most its kind, and a variable name is shown only up to an=or NUL, since a substituted value can be a credential. The kind comes from the samekindOfthat fix(mcpl): an MCPL server's boolean settings are true or false, and anything else is refused (#379) #451's MCPL server refusals use.pythonPathwith a separator still resolves from the host's working directory.PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1andPYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8are set last, over any declared value.\ud800escape in JSON it parses. The runtime'ssend()replaces each one before it writes a message.USERNAMEjoins the child-env allowlist, besideUSERandLOGNAME.What each part is for
buildChildEnv(Ra's) is the change itself. An empty env would losePATHand the locale.codeExecution.envandinheritEnv(Ra's) are what an operator lists to get a variable back, and a one-line restore. They're the same two fields as an MCPL server's, with the same meaning fortrueandfalse. With code execution enabled, the refusals say atcreate()that a quoted"true"restores nothing, where the runner alone would quietly keep the allowlist. They also keep anenvthat spawn would misread, or refuse at every start, from reaching the interpreter.nullcounts as not set. A generated config can write a setting it leaves unset asnullrather than leave it out, and this keeps such a config working.envandinheritEnvat the two runner sites, which could otherwise go with no test failing.PYTHONIOENCODING. The protocol writes non-ASCII JSON, which Python before 3.15 on Windows encodes in the ANSI code page when UTF-8 mode is off, and a host's ownPYTHONUTF8no longer reaches the interpreter.PYTHONIOENCODING=utf-8, the interpreter's channel to the host is strict UTF-8, so writing a lone surrogate raisedUnicodeEncodeErrorinsend(). The script's result never arrived, and the runner waited out the script's deadline, then killed the interpreter. Greptile found this onpy-runner.ts:338. Escaping each one instead, withensure_asciiorbackslashreplace, would pass lone surrogates on to the host, sinceJSON.parseturns"\udcff"into one..envand data. It guards against accidents, not access. Relative paths incodeExecution.envand in allowlisted path variables such asTMPDIR, a script's relative reads, and a relativePATHentry that a barepythonPathis looked up on now resolve there too, and the breaking entry and the tool's description say so. A relativepythonPathwith a separator resolves from the host's directory, so it still starts.create()doesn't check a runner built directly. Since fix(mcpl): an MCPL server's boolean settings are true or false, and anything else is refused (#379) #451,buildChildEnvpasses the host's whole environment only forinheritEnv: true. The test pins that such a runner fails closed, andPyRunnerrelies on that rather than readinginheritEnvitself.kindOf. TheinheritEnvandenvrefusals name a value's kind withkindOfinsrc/config-checks.ts, the functionmain's refusals of a mistyped setting use, so all of them word a kind the same way. This branch adds its cases fornullandundefined, which a variable's value inenvcan be.USERNAME. Python'sgetpass.getuser()triesLOGNAME,USERandLNAMEbeforeUSERNAME, and on Windows it raises when none is set. So on a Windows host that supplies the user's name only throughUSERNAME, it raises without it, in the interpreter and in MCPL children.Tests
