Converted Mathjax-formatted equations to plain text; gitpages doesn't render mathjax, and just shows raw $dollasign$ delimited equation. This is simpler.

Converted Mathjax-formatted equations to plain text; gitpages doesn't render mathjax, and just shows raw$dollasign$ delimited equation. For the subject content of this PR, equation formatting isn't needed: it's single-glyph variable names.
