Summary

Agent sandboxing now works per session. New root sessions are sandboxed by default, a toggle in the composer turns it off or on for one session, and each sandboxed session runs in its own microVM that mounts only that session's repository, with CPU and memory you can set. When another plugin that sandboxes the shell tool is loaded in the same OpenCode process, such as opencode-forge for loops, a shared arbiter picks exactly one plugin for each shell call. Without it, the outcome depended on plugin load order, and OCM silently overrode forge.

Per-session toggle (session-sandbox.ts, routes/session-sandbox.ts, db/session-sandbox-modes.ts)

  • New root sessions take their mode from preferences.sandbox.defaultForNewSessions (default on). Child sessions inherit their root session's mode. A fork copies its parent's mode and resources.
  • PUT /api/session-sandbox/:id with { sandboxed?, resources? | null }. A change applies to the session's next command, with no restart. Child sessions are locked to their root, and the call is rejected with 409 when sandboxing is off for the server.
  • The composer gets a sandbox control on desktop (next to the permission toggle) and in the mobile tools menu.

One microVM per session (services/sandbox/{command,runtime,shell-shim,resources}.ts)

  • Each root session gets ocm-session-<sha256(rootSessionId)[0:12]>, which its child sessions share. The VM mounts the session's git top level, the main repository's git common directory when the session is in a worktree, and the shared tool-output, skills, and agent tmp directories. Each VM has its own Docker data volume.
  • A command whose working directory is outside the session's mounts is blocked. The plugin pins the VM name in OCM_SANDBOX_NAME, and the shell shim refuses to run without a valid name.
  • Resources: a per-session override, then the Settings default (preferences.sandbox.cpus / memoryMib), then SANDBOX_CPUS / SANDBOX_MEMORY. Values above the host's CPU count or memory are rejected with a 400. A changed spec recreates the VM on its next call; the Docker volume is kept.
  • Lifecycle: a VM is created on the session's first sandboxed command. At most maxRunningVms (default 4) run at once: starting another stops the least recently used VM that has been idle for at least the exec timeout. If none qualifies, the call is blocked with a reason that names the limit. The Manager no longer boots a VM at startup; it only caches the guest image.
  • Removal: a session's VM and its Docker data volume are removed when its sandbox is turned off (in the background, so the toggle responds at once), when the session is deleted, and by the idle sweep. Every 60 s, the sweep removes each session VM, running or stopped, that has gone unused for max(idleStopMinutes (default 30), SANDBOX_EXEC_TIMEOUT_MS). That includes VMs left Stopped by the cap or by a Manager restart; those are measured from Manager boot, when the sweep now starts. Removal is serialized against boots, so a command planned during a removal gets a fresh VM. Measured on Colima, creating a VM plus volume takes about 5–10 s, the same as restarting a stopped one; what removal costs is installed packages and Docker images.
  • Settings → Sandbox gains default CPUs and memory, the idle-stop time, and the maximum number of running VMs. A "Sandbox resources…" dialog sets per-session overrides.

Sandbox provider arbitration (opencode-sandbox-plugin.ts)

  • Shared registry globalThis[Symbol.for('opencode.sandbox-arbiter.v1')]. Each plugin registers a claim({ sessionID, directory }) that has no side effects and returns a tier: workload (forge loops) beats explicit (a user toggle) beats default. Among equal tiers, the most recent toggle wins. Each call is decided once and cached under its call id, so the outcome does not depend on load order or wrapper nesting.
  • Only the winning plugin marks and pins the call; every other plugin passes it through untouched. A claim that throws, times out (15 s), or returns an invalid shape blocks the call; it never runs on the host. OCM's shell pin now throws when another plugin rewrites it, instead of silently ignoring the write.
  • Shell results carry metadata.sandboxProvider, and the badge names a non-OCM provider. The ocm-dockerd-start hint is added only when OCM owns the session.
  • The matching opencode-forge change (OF-14) is on forge branch sandbox-arbiter.

Fixes found by real-world testing

  • sse-aggregator: an event it could not route to a directory never reached any listener. After a Manager restart, deleting a session created earlier therefore leaked its VM and volume, plus its sandbox and permission mode rows, goals, and walkthroughs. Such events now reach the listeners with directory: null.
  • A VM create that failed partway left an orphaned msb sandbox: msb ls omitted it, but msb rejected every later create as "already exists". Creation now retries once with msb run --replace.
  • ocm-dockerd-start: on a fresh VM, dockerd could exit with "timeout waiting for containerd to start". The script now supervises dockerd for up to 180 s. This change ships in the sandbox image (see after merge).

Real-world validation

I built the production image and ran it with docker-compose.yml plus docker-compose.sandbox.yml on a Linux VM with nested KVM (Colima on Apple Silicon), driving the WebUI through a browser with a real agent model. Verified:

  • Sessions in two repositories got separate VMs, and each saw only its own repository.
  • The Settings defaults and a per-session 1 CPU / 1 GiB override applied.
  • Asking for more CPUs than the host has was rejected.
  • A toggle-off took effect immediately, and the command ran in the Manager container. It removed the session's VM and volume within 2 s, and turning the sandbox back on gave the next command a fresh VM.
  • After a Manager restart, the sweep removed all four Stopped leftover VMs, their volumes, and their directories two minutes after boot (idle time set to 1 minute).
  • The limit blocked a call with its reason, then stopped the least recently used idle VM.
  • The idle stop worked.
  • Deleting a session removed its VM and volume, both with and without a Manager restart in between.
  • The orphaned-VM recovery worked.
  • Docker inside the VM ran hello-world.

Validation

  • Backend: full Vitest suite, 180 files / 3732 tests passed. Bun suites (internal-sandbox, repos): 53 passed.
  • Frontend: full suite, 235 files / 2764 tests passed.
  • pnpm lint passed (0 errors), and the backend and frontend typechecks are clean.

After merge

  1. Run gh workflow run sandbox-image.yml --ref main to publish the guest image with the ocm-dockerd-start fix.
  2. Pin the digest it reports in docker-compose.sandbox.yml and shared/src/config/defaults.ts.

Known behavior (not changed here)

  • The settings key keeps its name idleStopMinutes, although the setting now removes idle VMs; only the UI label changed.
  • A VM left over from the shared-VM design (ocm-workspace, with its ocm-workspace-docker-data volume) is not removed automatically. Shutdown still stops it.
  • maxRunningVms counts OCM VMs only; forge VMs are not included.

Checklist

  • Code follows project style (no comments, named imports)
  • TypeScript types are properly defined
  • Tests added/updated (80% coverage target)
  • pnpm lint passes locally
  • pnpm typecheck passes locally

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configure sandbox defaults, CPU and memory limits, idle cleanup, and the maximum number of running sandboxes in settings.
    • Toggle sandboxing for individual sessions and adjust their resource limits from the session tools menu. Forked sessions inherit their parent’s sandbox settings.
    • Sandbox-enabled sessions run commands in isolated, session-specific environments. Identify sandboxed commands and see which provider handled them.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Sandbox resource requests that exceed available host capacity are rejected with an error.
    • Sandbox startup retries when the daemon is not running and allows more time for startup and lock acquisition.

This change adds per-session sandbox VMs and provider arbitration. The earlier review feedback appears to be addressed, and no remaining merge-blocking risk was found in the supplied context. After merge, the sandbox image still has to be republished and its digest pinned, as the PR description notes.

Remove the sandbox on deletion when sandboxing is disabled.

When session.deleted finds a sandbox mode row, sandboxSupported() can prevent removeSandboxInBackground() from running. After a restart with sandboxing disabled, the idle sweep is not started. The deleted session can therefore retain its stopped VM and Docker data volume.

Reviewed 5 CodeRabbit feedback items and applied fixes for all of them.

  • Mount derivation only accepts a git common dir outside the worktree when the common dir's worktrees/*/gitdir back-link resolves to <top>/.git (not following a symlinked .git); otherwise the plan is blocked.
  • getClaim/getState propagate root-session lookup errors instead of returning a default claim.
  • Sandbox resources dialog initializes its draft only when opened.
  • Sandbox settings skip saves and toasts when a blurred value is unchanged.

…vider arbitration

- Sandbox new root sessions by default with a per-session composer toggle;
child sessions inherit their root session's mode (OM-82)
- Run each sandboxed root session in its own microVM that mounts only the
  session's repository, with per-session CPU/memory overrides, Settings
defaults, idle stop, and a cap on running VMs (OM-89)
- Arbitrate shell sandboxing with other plugins (opencode-forge) through the
shared opencode.sandbox-arbiter.v1 registry so exactly one provider
sandboxes each call regardless of load order; fail closed on claim errors
- Throw when another plugin rewrites a pinned sandbox shell setting
- Tag sandboxed tool results with the owning provider and show it in the badge
- Hint the agent to start Docker inside the VM only when OCM owns the session
The sandbox toggle and resources dialog were only reachable from the mobile composer menu. Add SessionSandboxMenu next to the permission toggle on desktop and share the sandbox menu items with the mobile menu.
…tory

session.deleted carries only a session id, so after a Manager restart the aggregator could not resolve a directory for sessions created earlier and dropped the event before any listener ran. Deleting such a session leaked its sandbox microVM and volume, its sandbox and permission mode rows, goals, and walkthroughs. Listeners now receive unroutable events with a null directory.
A session VM create that fails partway leaves an orphaned msb sandbox that msb ls omits but every later create rejects as already existing, so the session could never get a VM again. Retry the create once with --replace when msb reports the name already exists.
On a freshly created session VM dockerd can exit with "timeout waiting for containerd to start" before its first initialization finishes. Supervise dockerd for up to 180s, relaunching it when it exits, instead of failing after 60s. Takes effect once the sandbox image is republished and its digest is pinned.
Turning a session's sandbox off now removes its microVM and Docker data volume in the background. The idle sweep removes idle session VMs instead of stopping them, covering stopped VMs and VMs left from before a Manager restart, and starts when the Manager boots. Removal is serialized against boots so a command planned during a removal gets a fresh VM.
