Summary

Every change-walkthrough request now runs in its own agent session instead of calling a model directly. That session reads the diff through a new walkthrough_changes action, writes one self-contained HTML file into a Manager-owned directory, and calls publish_walkthrough. The panel renders that file in a sandboxed frame shared with the inline artifact card and the file-browser HTML preview.

The agent builds the UI (services/change-walkthroughs.ts, services/walkthrough-outline.ts)

  • Generate, Update, Regenerate, /walkthrough, the multi-run button and the agent's open_walkthrough all spawn one walkthrough session, titled Walkthrough · <title>, in the target session's directory. Records stay keyed by (session, source) with the diff hash for stale detection.
  • The session reads an outline, or one file's full hunks, capped at WALKTHROUGH_DIFF_MAX_CHARS. One diff copy is reused for the whole run.
  • Output goes to <workspace>/walkthroughs/<sessionId>/<generationId>/index.html so /api/files?raw=true can serve it. Regenerate interrupts the previous session and removes its output directory.

Publication and execution are separate (db/change-walkthroughs.ts, migration 202610161200)

  • publish_walkthrough marks the walkthrough ready as soon as a first version exists, so the panel shows something early.
  • Execution is tracked separately, so Stop, the 15-minute limit, polling, refine gating and interruption on target deletion follow the agent rather than the first publish. Execution ending without a publish fails with WALKTHROUGH_NOT_PUBLISHED.

Walkthrough sessions (notification suppressor in index.ts)

  • Kept and listed, with an "Open walkthrough session" link, and their completion and error pushes muted. Refine prompts the same session and is refused with 409 while it is busy.

Shared sandboxed frame (ui/sandboxed-html-frame.tsx)

  • One component owns the allow-scripts-only policy for artifact cards, walkthroughs and the file-browser HTML preview.

Removed

  • The plan-then-explain pipeline, its stop and wire schemas, the stop UI and the concurrency limiter it used (utils/concurrency.ts).

Known risk (accepted)

  • The walkthrough session runs in the live checkout with the shell and the ocm tool available, since it needs the current uncommitted files. Edits are denied except in its own output directory, but shell deny lists are guards, not confinement, and repository or PR content could steer it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Change walkthroughs now open as interactive sessions with a generated HTML artifact that can be viewed, refreshed, and refined with text instructions.
    • Open a walkthrough’s separate session to explore changes, and publish its artifact from within the session.
    • Walkthroughs show generation and running status, with controls to cancel active work.
  • Improvements
    • HTML artifacts are displayed in a sandboxed frame.
    • Walkthrough change outlines adapt to large diffs, showing previews and indicating when content is omitted.

…ssion

Replace the fixed, stop-based walkthrough with an agent-built one. Every
request (Generate, Update, Regenerate, /walkthrough, the multi-run button
and the agent's open_walkthrough) now spawns a separate walkthrough
session. That session reads the diff through a new walkthrough_changes
action, writes one self-contained HTML file into a Manager-owned
directory, and calls publish_walkthrough; the panel renders the file in a
sandboxed frame shared with the inline artifact card and the file browser
HTML preview.

Publication marks the walkthrough ready while execution is tracked
separately, so Stop, the 15-minute limit, polling, refine gating and
interruption when the target session is deleted follow the agent instead
of the first publish. One diff copy is reused per run. Regenerate
interrupts the previous session and removes its output directory.

Walkthrough sessions are kept and listed, with their completion and error
push notifications muted. The stop pipeline, its wire schemas and the
concurrency limiter it used are removed.

📝 Walkthrough

The change replaces stored walkthrough summaries with database-backed walkthrough sessions that generate and publish HTML artifacts. It adds session and refinement endpoints, manager-tool actions for reading changes and publishing artifacts, and frontend support for viewing, refining, and tracking walkthrough sessions.

Changes: Interactive walkthrough sessions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Walkthrough contracts and persistence
shared/src/schemas/change-walkthroughs.ts, backend/src/db/change-walkthroughs.ts, backend/src/db/migrations/*, backend/test/db/change-walkthroughs.test.ts
Walkthrough records now store generation, session, artifact, publication, execution, and error fields in database columns. Migrations and database operations support generation claims, guarded updates, lookup, and deletion.
Session generation and artifact lifecycle
backend/src/services/change-walkthroughs.ts, backend/src/services/walkthrough-outline.ts, backend/src/services/session-artifacts.ts, shared/src/config/*, backend/test/services/walkthrough-outline.test.ts
The service creates and tracks walkthrough sessions, formats change outlines, validates HTML artifacts, and handles publication, refinement, cancellation, and timeout state.
Walkthrough routes and manager tools
backend/src/routes/change-walkthroughs.ts, backend/src/routes/internal/*walkthrough*, backend/src/services/opencode-manager-tool-plugin.ts, shared/src/schemas/internal-assistant.ts, backend/src/index.ts, backend/test/routes/*walkthrough*, backend/test/services/opencode-manager-tool-plugin.test.ts
Routes accept refinement requests and expose walkthrough-session changes and publication. Manager tools call those endpoints. The notification suppressor filters idle and failed events for linked walkthrough sessions.
Artifact, refinement, and frontend state
frontend/src/api/changeWalkthroughs.ts, frontend/src/hooks/useChangeWalkthrough.ts, frontend/src/components/session/ChangesWalkthroughSheet.tsx, frontend/src/components/ui/sandboxed-html-frame.tsx, frontend/src/components/file-browser/FilePreview.tsx, frontend/src/components/message/ArtifactPart.tsx, frontend/src/pages/SessionDetail.tsx, frontend/src/components/*, frontend/src/hooks/useChangeWalkthrough.test.tsx
The frontend polls while generation or execution is active, submits refinements, and displays published artifacts in a sandboxed frame. It adds controls to cancel or open the walkthrough session.

Walkthrough generation now runs in dedicated agent sessions. One schema helper still creates the old table shape and should be aligned with the new migration. Otherwise, no confirmed blocking defect remains.

Update ensureChangeWalkthroughTable to create the current schema.

202610061701-change-walkthroughs calls this helper, so a database initialized through that migration can receive the legacy four-column table. The current walkthrough operations require the newer lifecycle columns and can fail with no such column when the later schema migration has not run.

Update the helper to match migration 202610151200, including its index and execution_started_at. Do not remove the helper without also updating the migration that calls it.
