The MCP docs now say that @modelcontextprotocol/server and @modelcontextprotocol/sdk are optional peers of agents, so you install the one your server uses yourself. They also bump the pinned MCP versions to the ones the current Agents release expects (server/client 2.3.1, sdk 1.32.1).

Docs for cloudflare/agents#2634, which stops agents from installing the SDK v1 server stack (express, cors, ...) for apps that do not serve MCP (cloudflare/agents#2209):

  • handler-api and migrate-to-mcp-sdk-v2: optional-peer note and updated versions. The migration guide also warns legacy servers that import @modelcontextprotocol/sdk without declaring it to add it before upgrading.
  • agent-api (McpAgent): install step for @modelcontextprotocol/sdk.
  • transport (RPC) and client-api: the MCP client side needs neither package.

Merge after cloudflare/agents#2634 is released.
