A Docker container that provides a RESTful API for WhatsApp Web, enabling easy integration with WhatsApp for messaging automation and other services.

WhatsApp API TypeScript Docker

✨ Features

  • πŸ’¬ Send and receive WhatsApp messages
  • πŸ“ Media support (images, documents, audio, video)
  • πŸ”„ Multiple client sessions support
  • πŸ“Š Webhook notifications for incoming messages
  • πŸ“ Fully documented REST API with Swagger
  • 🐳 Easy Docker deployment
  • πŸ”’ Session persistence
  • πŸš€ Built with TypeScript for type safety

πŸš€ Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • Docker installed on your system
  • Node.js 16+ (for development)

Quick Start

  1. Run with Docker (recommended):

    docker run -d \
      --name whatshttp \
      -p 3000:3000 \
      -v whatsapp-sessions:/app/data \
      crazynds/whatshttp:latest
  2. Access the API documentation: Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000/docs

πŸ“š Documentation

API Reference

Detailed API documentation is available at /docs when the server is running. The documentation includes:

  • Available endpoints
  • Request/response schemas
  • Example requests
  • Authentication requirements

Webhook Payload Format

When a webhook URL is configured, the server will send HTTP POST requests with the following JSON structure for each event:

  "entry": [
    {
      "id": $clientId,
      "changes": [

LID (unknown phone number)

WhatsApp sometimes hides a contact's real phone number, addressing them only by a LID (an internal, opaque WhatsApp id β€” not a phone number) instead of a regular JID. This typically happens with contacts that have phone-number privacy enabled, and is very common for click-to-WhatsApp ads (Instagram/ Facebook ads that open a WhatsApp chat), where the number may never be exposed unless the user explicitly shares it.

When this happens, the server does not invent a fake phone number. Instead:

  • Any message from that contact is still sent to the webhook normally, but from comes empty ("") and a lid field is set instead (see the messages payload above) β€” the same applies to each entry in contacts (wa_id: "", lid: $contactLid).
  • The server automatically nudges WhatsApp's native "share phone number" prompt to that contact (equivalent to sending a message with { "requestPhoneNumber": true }), throttled to at most once every 6h per lid, so you don't need to do anything to trigger it.
  • If/when the contact accepts and the real phone number becomes known, the server sends a dedicated webhook event, field: "lid_resolved", so your backend can swap its internal references from the lid to the real phone and move on:
{
  "object": "whatsapp_web_account",
  "entry": [
    {
      "id": $clientId,
      "changes": [
        {
          "value": {
            "phone_number_id": $clientId,
            "lid": $contactLid,
            "phone": $resolvedPhoneNumber
          },
          "field": "lid_resolved"
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

There is no message queue/retry involved on the server's side β€” a lid that never resolves simply keeps sending messages marked with lid (and from empty) indefinitely; it's up to the consumer to decide how to handle that (e.g. not creating a "phone number" record until it's resolved).

Sending a message to a lid-only contact: if you don't have a phone number for a contact yet, send to {lid}@lid as the chatId (e.g. POST /api/message/chat/131451903279212@lid?clientId=...) instead of a bare phone number β€” the server accepts an explicit domain suffix on the chat id.

Whatsapp Web Disconnected

{
  "object": "whatsapp_web_account",
  "entry": [
    {
      "id": $clientId,
      "changes": [
        {
          "value": {
            "messaging_product": "whatsapp",
            "metadata": {
              "display_phone_number": $whatsappWebName,
              "phone_number_id": $clientId
            },
          },
          "field": "whatsapp_web_disconected"
        }
      ]
    },
    ...
  ]
}

If you are familiar with the Meta API, you will notice that the payload is very similar, but with some differences like the object field contains the value whatsapp_web_account instead of whatsapp_business_account and the disconected event has not an equivalent in the Meta API.

We will try to maintain compatibility with the Meta API in the future updates so you don't have to worry about.

Status Values

  • sent: Message was sent by the server.
  • delivered: Message was delivered to the recipient's device.
  • read: Message was read by the recipient.
  • error: There was an error when sending the message.

Environment Variables

Variable Default Description
PORT 3000 Port the server will listen on
DB_PATH ./data/db.sqlite Path to SQLite database file (use :memory: for in-memory)
LOG_LEVEL http Logging level (error, warn, info, http, debug)

Volumes

Path Description
/app/data Directory where the data files are stored and the database are stored

πŸ”§ Development

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 22+
  • npm
  • Docker (for containerized development)

Setup

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/crazynds/whatshttp.git
    cd whatshttp
  2. Install dependencies:

    npm install
  3. Start the development server:

    npm run dev
  4. The API docs will be available at http://localhost:3000/docs

Note: If you are using an OS other than Linux, you will need to comment or change the executablePath in the puppeteer options to the path of your Google Chrome installation.

Building for Production

# Build the Docker image
docker build -t whatshttp .

# Run the container
docker run -d -p 3000:3000 whatshttp
