Problem

The integration-tests job fails on every branch (incl. main and release-1.4) with:
Error: Socket closed before the connection was established. It's the only failing
job in CI. Not caused by any recent PR — the scripts date to 2024 (#103/#107).

Root cause

The job starts the app with webpack serve --mode=production, a dev server that:

  • recompiles the whole production bundle on startup (~90s locally; first HTTP 200
    only at ~137s) and holds every request until compilation finishes — far past the
    60s wait-on-timeout; and
  • binds to a single IP stack ([::1] locally), so wait-on probing the other stack
    (IPv4 127.0.0.1) is refused → "Socket closed before the connection was established".

Fix

Serve the already-built apps/standalone/dist (the action's build: step produces it)
with a tiny zero-dependency Node static server that starts instantly, binds dual-stack
(IPv4 + IPv6), and does SPA history-API fallback. Verified locally: IPv4 & IPv6 both
return 200 in ~13ms, deep SPA routes fall back to index.html, assets get correct
content-types. The e2e specs stub the backend via cy.intercept, so no backend is needed.

Summary

  • Affected areas: libs/cypress/ and root package.json. No changes are shown for libs/ui-components/, libs/types/, libs/i18n/, apps/standalone/, apps/ocp-plugin/, proxy/, packaging/, or .github/workflows/.
  • CI and E2E: integration-tests:ci now starts libs/cypress/scripts/serve-dist.js. The script serves the prebuilt apps/standalone/dist directory on PORT or port 9000, instead of starting webpack serve --mode=production. It serves static files with extension-based content types and falls back to index.html for missing paths to support client-side routes. It rejects paths that resolve outside the distribution directory and exits if index.html is missing.
  • Design and cross-cutting impact: This change affects the Cypress E2E test server and its CI command. It does not change shared UI components, standalone or OCP application code, the Go auth proxy, or container builds. The served artifact is the standalone app, but the change does not modify that app’s source.
  • Verification: No test results were provided.

Risk classification

risk:ask applies. The repository’s criteria classify shell scripts and semantic CI changes as risk:ask. This PR adds a JavaScript server script and changes the integration-tests:ci command. It does not qualify for risk:ship, which excludes hand-maintained JavaScript and semantic CI changes, or risk:show, which does not apply when an explicit risk:ask trigger is present.

Walkthrough

Adds a static HTTP server for apps/standalone/dist and changes integration-tests:ci to run it instead of building libraries and starting the standalone production app.

# Preprocessors API

A preprocessor is the plugin responsible for preparing a support file or a spec file for the browser.

A preprocessor could transpile your file from another language (ClojureScript) or from a newer version of JavaScript (ES2017).

A preprocessor also typically watches the source files for changes, processes them again, and then notifies Cypress to re-run the tests.

## Examples

We've created some example preprocessors as reference for you to look at. These are fully functioning preprocessors.

The code contains comments that explain how it uses the preprocessor API.

  * webpack preprocessor
  * Browserify preprocessor

## Defaults

By default, Cypress comes packaged with the webpack preprocessor already installed.

The webpack preprocessor handles:

  * ES2015 and JSX via Babel
  * TypeScript
  * Watching and caching files

info

Are you looking to change the default options for webpack?

If you already use webpack in your project, you can pass in your webpack config as shown here.

If you don't use webpack in your project or would like to keep the majority of the default options, you can modify the default options. Editing the options covers cases like:

  * Adding your own Babel plugins
  * Modifying options for TypeScript compilation

## Resolving import path aliases

If your spec or support files import modules through path aliases (for example `import { user } from '@/fixtures/user'`), the preprocessor that bundles those files must know how to resolve the alias, otherwise the spec fails to compile with a "module not found" error.

The default webpack preprocessor does not read aliases from your `package.json` `_moduleAliases` field, and it does not automatically apply the `compilerOptions.paths` from your `tsconfig.json` (those are a TypeScript type-checking feature, not a bundler feature). You need to tell the bundler about the aliases explicitly.

The most direct option is to add a `resolve.alias` entry to the webpack config you pass to the preprocessor:

To reuse the aliases already declared under `compilerOptions.paths` in your `tsconfig.json` instead of restating them, add `tsconfig-paths-webpack-plugin` to `resolve.plugins`:

  * cypress.config.js
  * cypress.config.ts

    `

    const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')

    module.exports = defineConfig({

      // setupNodeEvents can be defined in either

      // the e2e or component configuration

      e2e: {

        setupNodeEvents(on, config) {

          const webpackPreprocessor = require('@cypress/webpack-preprocessor')

          const TsconfigPathsPlugin = require('tsconfig-paths-webpack-plugin')

          const options = webpackPreprocessor.defaultOptions

          options.webpackOptions.resolve = {

            ...options.webpackOptions.resolve,

            plugins: [new TsconfigPathsPlugin()],

          }

          on('file:preprocessor', webpackPreprocessor(options))

        },

      },

    })

    `

    `

    import { defineConfig } from 'cypress'

    export default defineConfig({

      // setupNodeEvents can be defined in either

      // the e2e or component configuration

      e2e: {

        setupNodeEvents(on, config) {

          const webpackPreprocessor = require('@cypress/webpack-preprocessor')

          const TsconfigPathsPlugin = require('tsconfig-paths-webpack-plugin')

          const options = webpackPreprocessor.defaultOptions

          options.webpackOptions.resolve = {

            ...options.webpackOptions.resolve,

            plugins: [new TsconfigPathsPlugin()],

          }

          on('file:preprocessor', webpackPreprocessor(options))

        },

      },

    })

    `

info

This page covers aliases in end-to-end spec and support files, which are bundled by the preprocessor. For component testing, aliases are resolved by the dev server's Vite or Webpack config instead. See Resolving import path aliases.

note

If, for example, the source file is `spec.cljs`, the preprocessor should:

  1. Compile the ClojureScript into JavaScript `spec.js`
  2. Write that JavaScript file to disk (example: `/Users/foo/tmp/spec.js`)
  3. Resolve with the absolute path to that file: `/Users/foo/tmp/spec.js`

caution

This callback function can and will be called multiple times with the same `filePath`.

The callback function is called any time a file is requested by the browser. This happens on each run of the tests.

Make sure not to start a new watcher each time it is called. Instead, cache the watcher and, on subsequent calls, return a promise that resolves when the latest version of the file has been processed.

## File object

The `file` object passed to the callback function has the following properties:

Property  | Description
--- | ---
`filePath` | The full path to the source file.
`outputPath` | The suggested path for saving the preprocessed file to disk. This is unique to the source file. A preprocessor can choose to write the file elsewhere, but Cypress automatically provides you this value as a convenient default.
`shouldWatch` | A boolean indicating whether the preprocessor should watch for file changes or not.

It builds on the lower-level `webpack-preprocessor` and bundles the loaders and configuration needed to give you TypeScript and JSX support out of the box with zero configuration.
This only applies to cypress open. Nothing is watched during cypress run, so the `watchForFileChanges` property has no effect there.

#### The default preprocessor

The component responsible for the file-watching behavior in Cypress is the `@cypress/webpack-batteries-included-preprocessor`. This is the default preprocessor packaged with Cypress and is registered automatically when you don't provide your own `file:preprocessor` event. It builds on the lower-level `webpack-preprocessor` and bundles the loaders and configuration needed to give you TypeScript and JSX support out of the box with zero configuration. That zero-config support is the reason most projects never have to think about bundling at all.

If you need further control of the file-watching behavior you can configure this preprocessor explicitly: it exposes options that control behavior such as what is watched and the delay before emitting an "update" event after a change.

Cypress also ships other file-watching preprocessors - you'll have to configure these explicitly if you want to use them.

You can run a group of tests or a single test by placing an `.only` on a test suite or specific test.

You can run a single test file or group of tests by passing the `--spec` flag to cypress run.

### Where should I put my spec files, and how does Cypress find them?

Cypress discovers spec files using the `specPattern` configuration option, which defaults to `cypress/e2e/**/*.cy.{js,jsx,ts,tsx}` for end-to-end testing and `**/*.cy.{js,jsx,ts,tsx}` for component testing. Any file anywhere in your project that matches `specPattern` is picked up, so you're free to organize specs into whatever folder structure suits your team. See How Cypress finds your specs for details.

### What hooks does Cypress support, and in what order do they run?

Cypress uses Mocha's hooks: `before`, `beforeEach`, `afterEach`, and `after`. `before` and `after` run once per suite, while `beforeEach` and `afterEach` run around every test. For the full execution order, including how hooks interleave with tests, see Hooks.

Use `.mts` and `.cts` the same way you would use `.mjs` and `.cjs` — to force ESM or CommonJS regardless of `package.json` `"type"`.

#### Align `tsconfig.json` with your module format

Cypress does not use `compilerOptions.module` when deciding how to load your config — that comes from the file extension and nearest `package.json` `"type"`. Your `tsconfig.json` should still align so TypeScript and your editor match how Cypress runs the file:

CommonJS — set `compilerOptions.module` to `"commonjs"`, then either:

  * name the config `cypress.config.cts`, or
  * use `cypress.config.ts` with `package.json` `"type"` omitted or set to `"commonjs"`

ESM — set `compilerOptions.module` to an ESM-compatible option (for example `"NodeNext"` or `"ES2022"`), then either:

  * set `package.json` `"type"` to `"module"` and use `cypress.config.ts`, or
  * name the config `cypress.config.mts`

`import` and `export` syntax in a `.ts` config does not by itself mean the file loads as ESM. With `compilerOptions.module` set to `"commonjs"`, TypeScript transpiles those statements to `require()` and `module.exports` — so you can use `import` in a config that Cypress loads as CommonJS. What matters is the alignment between `compilerOptions.module`, your config file extension, and `package.json` `"type"`.

You might need to include the *.d.ts in the include options in any tsconfig.json files in your project for TypeScript to pick up the new types:

  * tsconfig.json

    `

    "include": [

      "src",

      "./cypress.d.ts"

    ]

    `

  * ./cypress/tsconfig.json

    `

    "include": [

      "**/*.ts",

      "../cypress.d.ts"

    ]

    `

caution

TypeScript must be able to find the declaration file

If you rename or move a declaration file, verify that its path is covered by the `include` globs in every `tsconfig.json` that needs to see it. A common mistake is placing a `global.d.ts` inside `cypress/support/` while the `cypress/tsconfig.json` only includes `**/*.ts` — `.d.ts` files are matched by `**/*.ts` only if the glob is `**/*.{ts,d.ts}` or `**/*`. Safest practice: list the file explicitly or use `"include": ["**/*.ts", "**/*.d.ts"]`.

Hi @alexeyr-ci The current answer is that `cypress.config.ts` does not need to be included in one of your project's `tsconfig.json` files in order for Cypress to execute it. Since Cypress 15, Cypress uses `tsx` internally to transpile and run TypeScript configuration files. For the module format, current Cypress follows Node-style rules:

  * `cypress.config.mts` forces ESM
  * `cypress.config.cts` forces CommonJS
  * `cypress.config.ts` follows the nearest `package.json` `"type"`
In particular, Cypress does not use `compilerOptions.module` to decide whether the configuration file is loaded as ESM or CommonJS. Your `tsconfig.json` should still agree with the chosen module format so TypeScript/editor diagnostics match runtime behavior. The linked problem also uses the old:

    `cypress-cucumber-preprocessor
    `

package. I would not try to fix its CommonJS/default-export interoperability by reverse-engineering Cypress's internal TypeScript settings today. The current maintainer explicitly recommends using:

    `@badeball/cypress-cucumber-preprocessor
    `

instead. That package uses modern package exports and, depending on which entry points you import, its current documentation recommends Node-style TypeScript module resolution such as `node16`/`NodeNext`. So for a current project, align the config's ESM/CJS format explicitly and migrate off the old preprocessor rather than depending on the old `module.exports = { default: ... }` behavior. Please mark this answer as accepted if it helped, thank you.</excerpt>

Restore the types build before running Cypress.

The Cypress support entrypoint imports interceptors that reach runtime enum values from @flightctl/types, including ApiVersion, ConditionStatus, ConditionType, and RepoSpecType. Cypress does not apply the tsconfig path alias to its default webpack preprocessor. The import therefore resolves through the workspace package, whose default export is libs/types/dist/index.js.

The CI build removes dist directories and builds only apps/standalone. Without build:libs, Cypress can fail while preprocessing the support bundle because libs/types/dist/index.js is missing.

Update the integration-tests:ci script in package.json to run build:libs before
starting serve-dist.js, ensuring the @flightctl/types dist entrypoint exists
when Cypress preprocesses its support bundle.

Looks good, let's see if this will fix the Cypress errors we've had recently.

The integration-tests job failed on every branch at the wait-on health
check ("Socket closed before the connection was established"), before any
server could boot. Root cause is upstream: the GitHub runner image now
bundles Node >= 24.20, where a refused localhost connection raises
ERR_SOCKET_CLOSED_BEFORE_CONNECTION; cypress-io/github-action v6 (got@11)
treats that as fatal instead of retrying. Fixed in v7.4.4+ (got@16).

Changes:
- Bump cypress-io/github-action to v7.4.6 (the core fix).
- Serve the prebuilt apps/standalone/dist with a small dependency-free,
  dual-stack static server instead of `webpack serve`, which recompiled the
  production bundle on startup (~90s, past the 60s timeout) and bound a
  single IP stack.
- Build the workspace libs (@flightctl/types, @flightctl/ui-components) in
  the build step so Cypress's webpack preprocessor can resolve them when
  compiling the specs. Wrapped in an npm script so the && is not forwarded
  to webpack as arguments (the action does not run the build input via a
  shell).
- Add ready_for_review to the pull_request trigger so marking a draft PR
  ready runs the suite (preflight-check already gated on draft state).
