Allow Cypress install script for any version - #2065
Conversation
npm 12 only runs install scripts for allowScripts entries matching the installed version. Cypress was pinned at 16.0.0, so after it was bumped to 16.1.0 its postinstall (binary download) was silently skipped and `cypress run` failed in the release workflow with a missing binary. Use a name-only entry so version bumps don't break it.

For project approvals, `npm install-scripts approve <pkg>` matches the package name across installed versions, but by default records approval pinned to the installed version you reviewed (for example, `pkg@1.2.3`). To approve future versions too, use `--no-allow-scripts-pin`; existing version pins are otherwise narrow. ([docs.npmjs.com](https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/v11/commands/npm-install-scripts/?utm_source=openai))
One nuance: the `--allow-scripts` config/flag is intended for global or one-off contexts, not project-scoped installs; it matches a dependency’s **resolved identity**. ([docs.npmjs.com](https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/install-test/?utm_source=openai))

Pin Cypress script approval to the locked version. An unversioned cypress approval covers every Cypress version under npm’s project allowScripts policy. The lockfile resolves Cypress 16.1.0, while the previous approval pinned 16.0.0. Dependabot checks npm dependencies weekly, and the release workflow runs npm ci after installing npm@latest. A later Cypress update can therefore run its install script without a matching version-specific approval. Pin 16.1.0 and update the approval with reviewed Cypress bumps.
