The opening line of a string spanning two lines (e.g. readonly NL=' ') was reported as uncovered when Bash attributes the hit to the closing line, which is what Bash < 5.3 does for readonly and all versions do for plain assignments.

  • Only check inner lines when skipping already-marked multiline strings, since the next line may be the closing one holding the hit.
  • Don't let the separator before the opening quote span a newline, otherwise the closing quote was mistaken for an opening one.

Fixes #108.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved coverage reporting for multiline Bash constructs, including arrays, heredocs, continued commands, and strings spanning multiple lines.
    • Improved coverage handling when constructs overlap, ensuring relevant lines are checked, including when a new construct starts on the final line of another.
  • Tests

    • Expanded multiline-script examples to cover newline variables, continuations, quoted strings, chained commands, and heredocs.
    • Updated expected coverage results to match the expanded examples.

The opening line of a string spanning two lines (e.g. `readonly NL='
'`) was reported as uncovered when Bash attributes the hit to the
closing line, which is what Bash < 5.3 does for `readonly` and all
versions do for plain assignments.

- Only check inner lines when skipping already-marked multiline
strings, since the next line may be the closing one holding the hit.
- Don't let the separator before the opening quote span a newline,
otherwise the closing quote was mistaken for an opening one.

Fixes #108.

Walkthrough

The lexer now matches multiline Bash constructs from file offsets and updates coverage through each match. Test fixtures add newline-containing values and multiline parsing cases. Expected coverage arrays are updated for those fixtures.

Changes: Multiline coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lexer matching and coverage flow
lib/bashcov/lexer.rb
MULTILINE_PATTERNS defines ordered patterns for multiline constructs. complete_coverage reads the file once and advances through matched constructs. mark_multiline checks interior lines and returns the final line number for a multiline match.

The fixtures add newline-containing values and cases for continuations, multiline strings, assignments, chained commands, and heredocs. Expected coverage values are updated for both fixtures.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #108 reports incorrect coverage for a two-line quoted assignment such as readonly NL=' followed by a closing quote. Bashcov::Lexer now checks inner lines when it skips marked multiline strings and prevents the separator before an opening quote from crossing a newline. The multiline2.sh and multiline3.sh fixtures and updated expected coverage data test the affected multiline cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #108. The lexer changes correct multiline string matching and coverage propagation. The fixtures and expected coverage updates provide regression coverage for these parsing cases. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Each multiline regexp was matched against a fresh copy of the rest of
the file for every line, making the lexer quadratic. Match against the
whole content once instead, anchored at the line offset with \G.

Output is unchanged; lexing an 8000-line script goes from ~4s to ~0.6s
(2-7x faster depending on the amount of multiline constructs).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Once a multiline construct has been marked, jump to its last line
instead of matching every pattern again from each of its inner lines.
Skipped lines still go through mark_line so constructs in code that was
never executed keep being reported as uncovered.

Also move the patterns to a constant so the interpolated regexps are no
longer recompiled for every line.

Output is unchanged; lexing gets another 1.1-3x faster depending on the
amount of multiline constructs.

A multiline string whose opening quote follows a backslash line
continuation (e.g. `echo \` then `'a` on the next line) left lines of
executed statements reported as uncovered.

- Allow an escaped newline followed by optional horizontal whitespace
before the opening quote, while still rejecting unescaped newlines.
- Try multiline string patterns before simple line continuations, which
would otherwise claim the opening line first.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Skipping past a multiline construct missed another one opening on its
closing line (e.g. `b" && echo "c`), reporting its remaining lines as
uncovered on Bash 5.3+. Resume from the closing line instead.

An escaped double quote (e.g. `\"hi\"`) inside a multiline double-quoted
string was treated as its closing quote, reporting lines of executed
statements as uncovered. Allow backslash escapes inside double quotes;
single quotes are unchanged since they cannot contain escapes in Bash.

The greedy pattern ran to the last occurrence of the delimiter word in the
file, so a second heredoc with the same delimiter (or any later line
mentioning it) swallowed the commands in between.

Restrict tab indentation to <<- heredocs.

A plain heredoc does not treat \tEOF as its terminator. The current \t*\1$ boundary applies to both <<EOF and <<-EOF. For a reachable script containing:

cat <<EOF
	EOF
EOF

the matcher stops at the body line. Bashcov::Lexer#complete_coverage then propagates the cat hit only through that line. The real terminator remains uncovered in the result.

Use separate patterns for << and <<-.

Bash strips leading tabs from the closing delimiter only for <<-, so a
plain heredoc whose body holds a tab-indented delimiter line ended early
and its real closing line was reported as uncovered.
