Closes #274. Docs and the text tot_mcp gives its clients (the error hints, the server instructions, the docstrings); no Fortran or C change. One commit on develop ea9806ac.

  1. The tot Sphinx examples. parameters.md and parameter-setting.md (en, ja) called tot.set_param_str("fp:KNAMEQ", ...) and ("wr:KNAMEQ", ...).

    • tot_param_set_str (tot/tot_param_registry.f90) passes strings on for eq: and tr: only. Checked with libtotapi.so: eq:KNAMEQ and tr:KNAMEQ are accepted, while fp:KNAMEQ and wr:KNAMEQ raise TotlibInvalidParamError (rc=1).
    • The examples now use eq: and tr:. They say that fp:KNAMEQ goes through totlib.TotPipeline.set_param, which hands it to fplib's own set_param_str (in tot_mcp, through run_pipeline's params), and that ti, wr and wrx take no strings.
    • They no longer say that each module reads its own KNAMEQ. tr has its own (tr/trcomm_ctrl.f90), but eq's and fp's registries both write pl's (plcomm). The pages now say that where eq and fp share one copy of pl, as in the mono image, eq:KNAMEQ also names the file fp loads. Measured:
      • libtotapi_mono.so has one plcomm KNAMEQ. After tot_set_param_str("eq:KNAMEQ", "missing-from-eq.bin") and fp:MODELG=3, fp_run(1) returned 3 with "FROPEN (EQ): FILE NOT FOUND: missing-from-eq.bin". A second eq:KNAMEQ was followed the same way.
      • The same calls through libtotapi.so on macOS: fp looked for eqdata both times, so there the two are separate.
      • Linux was not measured.
  2. The tool count. tot_mcp/__init__.py and the Sphinx MCP pages (en, ja) said 9 tools; server.py registers 10. They now say 10, and the tables have a run_pipeline row.

  3. tot_mcp/README.md.

    • 6.4 says which tools take strings, and that fp:KNAMEQ goes in run_pipeline's params.
    • The set_params row of section 7 lists strings (eq: and tr: only).
  4. The hints. _wrap_totlib_error appended "tot parameter names must be namespaced" to every refused parameter, including a correctly namespaced name. It now looks at which call was refused, at the start of the message:

    refused hint
    tot_set_param_str "tot passes string values on only to the file names eq:KNAMEQ, KNAMEQ2, KNAMWR, KNAMWM, KNAMFP, KNAMFO, KNAMPF and tr:KNAMEQ; send numbers as numbers, and give fp:KNAMEQ in run_pipeline's params (ti:, wr: and wrx: take no strings)"
    tot_set_param "the module does not know the name or refused the value; describe_parameters lists the names of each namespace"
    a string totlib rejects before the call (not ASCII, a NUL, too long), or another call's argument (tot_run(-1)) none: the message says what is wrong
    anything else, e.g. totlib's namespace check the namespace hint, as before
    • The "numbers as numbers" part is there because a number sent as a JSON string (set_params({"eq:RR": "6.5"})) takes the string path.
    • For tot_set_param, the name has already passed totlib's namespace check; the refusal is the module's, of the name or of the value (fp:NSAMAX 9).
    • A message that ends in a period no longer gets ".." before the hint.
    • Six tests. Five fail on develop; the sixth checks the namespace hint that stays.
  5. The stub notes. These texts said that run and get_state are stubs until L-6, or that tot_mcp has a set_param_str:

    • in tot_mcp/server.py: the server instructions an MCP client receives, the run and get_state docstrings, the module docstring and the rc=4 message;
    • in tot_mcp/README.md: sections 4, 6.1 and 7, and Q5;
    • in totlib: errors.py, the README, and the three examples (two of them printed it);
    • docs/tot-library/architecture.md: its known limitations, the rc=4 row, and the phase and acceptance tables, which had L-6 pending.

    L-6 is in (feat(tot): Phase L-6 4-layer tests #96, feat(tot): Phase L-6 fan-out (tot_api_init/run/get_state/finalize) #124):

    The texts now say what each entry point does: init/finalize bring up and tear down eq (since L-7b-ii follow-up: tot_init should cascade eq_api_init (avoid dual-flag foot-gun) #209), tr, ti, fp and wr; run advances TR; get_state fills TR's slots; coupling is TotPipeline's. totlib's README and module docstring, which left eq out of that list, are corrected too.

    architecture.md also:

    • says, in its quirks and its limitations, that fp has a string setter of its own, reached through TotPipeline and not through tot;
    • says that totlib refuses a second live Tot() in a process (it said the two would share state; so did totlib's README and the Tot docstring, now corrected too);
    • says that a library from before L-3 is refused at load (it said one would load).

    totlib's README, module docstring and the comments of _apply_prototypes and Tot._open now call the pre-L-3 and pre-L-6 allowances leftovers (they said "forward compatibility").

Plus a CHANGELOG.md Fixed entry, after the third entry; no other open PR inserts there.

Left as they are. The comments of tot/tests/c_abi/test_negative.c, which describe the stubs; the test accepts either code. The class docstrings of trlib.Trlib, eqlib.Eq and tilib.TiLib, which say a second instance would reset the state; those wrappers refuse it too, each with its own error class. The comments of tot/tot_param_registry.f90 (lines 28-33 and 130), which say the other namespaces refuse strings until their registries add a _str entry point; fp's registry has one, and it is tot that does not pass the string on. Both are for a later change.

Tests, under CI's flags:

run passed skipped
tot_mcp and totlib, without libtotapi.so in the tree 195 67
the same with libtotapi.so 236 26
tot_mcp and fp_mcp, merged with #231's head bfa64d9e 131 3

With libtotapi.so, the 26 skips are totlib tests that need other libraries. Through libtotapi.so, set_params behaves as the table says:

  • eq:RR given as "6.5", fp:KNAMEQ and tr:KNAMTR get the string hint;
  • a 300-byte eq:KNAMEQ gets none;
  • eq:KNAMEQ "eq.bin" is set.

Merges. The branch merges without conflict into develop, and with #226, #231, #267, #269 and #270. #231 also edits tot_mcp/server.py, in other places (the registry and the docstrings of set_param, set_params and run_pipeline).

…t, the refused-string hint (k-yoshimi#274)

The four items of k-yoshimi#274, all on develop as found by the docs review of
k-yoshimi#231, and the stale stub notes of tot_mcp, totlib and the tot docs:
1. The tot Sphinx pages (parameters.md and parameter-setting.md, en
   and ja) called tot.set_param_str on "fp:KNAMEQ" and "wr:KNAMEQ".
   tot_param_set_str (tot/tot_param_registry.f90) passes strings on for
   eq: and tr: only and returns ierr=1 for the others (checked with
   libtotapi.so: eq:KNAMEQ and tr:KNAMEQ accepted, fp: and wr: refused
   with rc=1). The examples use eq: and tr:, and say that fp:KNAMEQ
   goes through totlib.TotPipeline.set_param, which hands it to
   fplib's own set_param_str (tot_mcp: run_pipeline's params), and
   that ti, wr and wrx take no strings. They no longer say that each
   module reads its own KNAMEQ: eq's registry and fp's both write
   plcomm's KNAMEQ (tr has its own in trcomm_ctrl), so where eq and fp
   share one copy of pl, as in libtotapi_mono.so (one
   plcomm_parm_MOD_knameq), eq:KNAMEQ also names the file fp loads.
2. tot_mcp registers 10 tools; __init__.py and the Sphinx MCP pages
   said 9, and the tables lack run_pipeline. They say 10 and have the
   row.
3. tot_mcp/README.md 6.4 names the run_pipeline path for fp:KNAMEQ;
   the set_params row of section 7 lists strings (eq: and tr: only).
4. _wrap_totlib_error told every refused parameter to namespace its
   name, also a correctly namespaced string that tot refuses. The hint
   now follows the refused call:
   - tot_set_param_str: a hint that names the string parameters (eq:
     KNAMEQ, KNAMEQ2, KNAMWR, KNAMWM, KNAMFP, KNAMFO, KNAMPF; tr: KNAMEQ),
     says to send numbers as numbers (a number sent as a JSON string
     takes this path) and gives the run_pipeline path for fp:KNAMEQ;
   - tot_set_param: the name passed totlib's namespace check, so the
     hint says the module does not know the name or refused the value,
     and points at describe_parameters;
   - a string totlib rejects itself (not ASCII, a NUL, too long) or
     another call's refused argument (tot_run(-1)): no hint;
   - anything else, e.g. totlib's namespace check: the namespace hint.
   The call is matched at the start of the message only, so a value
   that contains "tot_set_param_str(" is not mistaken for one. A message
   that ends in a period no longer gets ".." before the hint. Six
   tests; five fail on develop, the sixth pins the namespace hint that
   stays.
5. Several texts said that run and get_state are stubs until L-6, or
   that tot_mcp has a set_param_str: the tot_mcp server instructions,
   the run and get_state docstrings, the module docstring and the rc=4
   message; tot_mcp/README.md 4, 6.1, 7 and Q5; totlib's errors.py,
   README and the three examples (two printed it); and
   docs/tot-library/architecture.md (its known limitations, the rc=4 row,
   the phase table and the acceptance criteria, which had L-6 pending).
   L-6 is in (k-yoshimi#96, k-yoshimi#124): test_integration.py drives init, run,
   get_state and finalize; no Fortran entry point returns
   TOT_ERR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED; a libtotapi.so built before k-yoshimi#246 is refused
   at load (TotlibAbiError), so rc=4 cannot reach a caller now. tot_mcp
   has no set_param_str tool. The texts now say what the entry points
   do: init/finalize bring up and tear down eq (since k-yoshimi#209), tr, ti, fp
   and wr; run advances TR; get_state fills TR's slots (also corrected
   in totlib's README and module docstring, which left out eq).
   architecture.md also says, in its quirks and its limitations, that
   fp has a string setter of its own, reached through TotPipeline, not
   tot; that totlib refuses a second live Tot() in a process (it said
   the two would share state; so did totlib's README and the Tot
   docstring, corrected too); and that a library from before L-3 is
   refused at load (it said one would load). The comments of totlib's
   _apply_prototypes and Tot._open, its README and its module
   docstring call their pre-L-3 and pre-L-6 allowances leftovers.
   Left as they are: the comments of tot/tests/c_abi/test_negative.c
   and of tot/tot_param_registry.f90 (no Fortran or C change here).
And a CHANGELOG Fixed entry, after the third one, where no other open
pull request inserts.

I merged #231 and this PR myself on 2026-10-23 at 15:13Z, from my account. That went against your rule that the merge is done on your side after the two reviews: this PR had no review from you yet, and #231 went in before #267, which you wanted first. I'm sorry; I won't merge on this repository again.

Where things stand:

Please review this PR as you would have. Anything you want changed I'll do in a follow-up PR, or I'll open a revert if you would rather review it unmerged.
