Reject non-integer and negative weights instead of silently truncating.
int(float("2.5")) returns 2. The tool then calibrates the scale to 2 kg while 2.5 kg is on the platform, and every later reading is wrong by 25%. A negative value also passes this check. Assigning it to set_scale then raises an uncaught protobuf ValueError. The field is integer kg, so accept only non-negative integers. bin/setscale_watch.py Line 22 has the same truncation and has no validation at all.

Gate the DS18B20 registration on ARCH_ESP32.
DS18B20Sensor.h declares the class only when ARCH_ESP32 is defined. This registration checks only PIN_DS18B20_DATA. If a non-ESP32 variant (for example nRF52 or RP2040) defines PIN_DS18B20_DATA, the class is undeclared at Line 386 and the build fails. Use the same condition as the header.

Shift by the bank-relative bit index for pins 32 and higher.
For PIN_DS18B20_DATA >= 32, OW_MASK correctly uses PIN_DS18B20_DATA - 32. OW_INPUT_READ() still shifts GPIO.in1.val by the absolute pin number. A shift of 32 or more on a 32-bit value is undefined behavior, and the code reads the wrong bit. As a result, oneWireReset() and oneWireReadBit() return wrong values for every pin in bank 1. The driver cannot detect or read the sensor on those pins. The comment at Lines 44-45 says that "any pin works", but this bug breaks that claim.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Do not block the telemetry thread for the conversion time inside getMetrics().
readTemperature() calls delay(750). getMetrics() can retry it, so one call can block for about 1.5 s. HX711Sensor::getMetrics() blocks for 9 conversions, which is about 0.9 s at 10 SPS.
getMetrics() runs on more than the send path. EnvironmentTelemetryModule::refreshDisplayedMeasurement() calls getEnvironmentTelemetry() whenever the display shows the local measurement. That is the default Mesh source when no remote packet is cached. The call is throttled only by LOCAL_DISPLAY_REFRESH_INTERVAL_MS = 1000, and runOnce() calls it on every pass. With both sensors present, the cooperative scheduler can block for about 1.5–2.5 s on every cycle. This delays radio, mesh, and UI work.
Split the measurement into two steps:
- Start
CONVERT_TinrunOnce(). - Read the scratchpad on a later
runOnce()after 750 ms has passed, and cache the result.
getMetrics() should then return the cached value. Apply the same caching to HX711Sensor.

Thanks for the detailed analysis. Deliberately keeping the blocking read for now, for three reasons:
-
Precedent: the DS248X driver in this codebase uses the identical delay(750) for its conversion wait (DS248XSensor.cpp), so this pattern is already accepted for 1-Wire temperature sensors here.
-
Target use case: these sensors exist for power-saving SENSOR nodes (the hive monitoring use case driving this PR). On such a node getMetrics() runs once per wake cycle with the radio queue idle — blocking there is harmless, and the 750 ms is dwarfed by the deep-sleep interval (900 s).
-
Blast radius after the variant split: the sensors now compile only into the dedicated heltec-v3-hive variant, so the display-refresh path you describe (refreshDisplayedMeasurement() at 1 s throttle) can only ever hit this on a node whose owner deliberately flashed the beehive firmware — a power-saving sensor node with the screen off.
Happy to implement the two-phase start/read caching in a follow-up if maintainers consider the display-equipped case worth covering.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@PizzaCaviar Thanks for clarifying the intended deployment. Retaining blocking reads is an explicit trade-off for power-saving SENSOR nodes with the screen off. I will not press for the refactor in this PR.
The display-refresh concern still applies if the hive firmware runs with local measurements displayed. The variant split limits exposure, but does not prevent that configuration.
Would you like a follow-up issue for nonblocking acquisition and cached measurements in both drivers?

There was a problem hiding this comment.
@PizzaCaviar I cannot create a GitHub issue with the available read-only tools. Here is a ready-to-post follow-up.
Title
Use nonblocking acquisition and cached measurements for DS18B20 and HX711
Summary
Separate sensor acquisition from telemetry reads in both drivers. Make getMetrics() return cached measurements without waiting for conversion or averaging.
Blocking reads remain an accepted trade-off for the power-saving hive deployment described in #12189. This follow-up covers configurations such as local measurement display, where repeated blocking reads can delay the cooperative scheduler.
Required changes
- DS18B20: Start conversion on one scheduled pass. Read and validate the scratchpad on a later pass, after the conversion interval.
- HX711: Collect samples incrementally when ready. Cache the completed average without blocking for multiple conversions.
- Define cache validity, freshness, and failure behavior.
- Preserve temperature validation, weight calibration, tare, and calibration persistence.
Affected areas
src/modules/Telemetry/Sensor/DS18B20Sensor.cppand.hsrc/modules/Telemetry/Sensor/HX711Sensor.cppand.hsrc/modules/Telemetry/EnvironmentTelemetry.cpp
Acceptance criteria
getMetrics()does not wait for sensor conversion or sample collection.- Local display refresh uses cached measurements.
- Missing or failed sensors do not stall the scheduler.
- Power-saving SENSOR nodes can obtain fresh measurements before sleep.
- Tare and calibration continue to work.

Reject all-zero and power-on scratchpads.
The driver accepts two invalid scratchpads as valid readings:
- Line held low. If the data line is shorted or has no pull-up,
oneWireReset()sees a "presence" pulse. Every byte then reads as0x00.ds18b20CRC8of eight zero bytes is0x00, so the CRC check passes and the node reports 0.0 °C. - Power-on value. The power-on scratchpad value
0x0550(85 °C) has a valid CRC. It appears when no conversion has run.
Reject both cases. Also check that the line is high before the reset pulse.

Protect each SCK-high phase from preemption.
The HX711 enters power-down if PD_SCK stays high for more than 60 µs. On ESP32, a FreeRTOS context switch or an ISR can run between digitalWrite(PIN_HX711_SCK, HIGH) and LOW. Either one can exceed 60 µs. The chip then resets, and the read returns a corrupted 24-bit sample, which goes into the average.
The header comment at HX711Sensor.h Lines 16-18 describes the timing as millisecond-scale. Only DOUT readiness works on that scale. The clocking requires microsecond-scale timing.
Disable interrupts around each high/low pulse. Common HX711 libraries do the same.

Update the HX711 read loop and additional channel-selection pulse so interrupts
cannot preempt an SCK-high phase: disable interrupts before driving SCK high and
re-enable them immediately after driving it low. Keep bit processing outside the
protected interval where possible, and apply the same protection to the extra
pulse.

Keep negative calibration factors.
calibrate() accepts any nonzero net. If the load cell is wired with reversed polarity (A+/A- swapped), net is negative and calibrationFactor is negative. That is a valid calibration, and getMetrics() handles it correctly. On the next boot, however, loadCalibrationData() replaces every factor <= 0 with 1.0. The calibration is silently lost and the node reports raw counts as kg.
A power-saving SENSOR node reboots from deep sleep on every cycle. For such a node, a reversed-polarity calibration therefore never takes effect. Reject only zero and non-finite factors.

Sensors: - HX711Sensor: bit-banged 24-bit ADC driver (DOUT=GPIO48, SCK=GPIO47), 8-sample averaging, tare + calibration via custom set_scale admin message (protobuf tag 23), persistence in /prefs/hx711.dat, reports environment_metrics.weight in kg - DS18B20Sensor: bit-banged 1-Wire on GPIO4 using direct GPIO register access (Arduino digitalWrite timing is too coarse for 1-Wire slots), Skip ROM addressing, 750ms 12-bit conversion, CRC8 scratchpad validation, reports environment_metrics.temperature Framework: - EnvironmentTelemetry.cpp: register both sensors as non-I2C (DeviceType::NONE) under HELTEC_V3 - DeviceTelemetry.h: power-saving SENSOR nodes skip the 30-75s module start delay and send device telemetry early in the wake window; otherwise deep sleep (approx 15s) ends before the default delay elapses and battery/voltage would never be transmitted Tools: - bin/setscale.py: send set_scale admin message over serial (0 = tare, N = calibrate to N kg) - bin/setscale_watch.py: same, with serial response capture
Drivers now compile only when a board's variant.h declares their pins (PIN_HX711_DATA/PIN_HX711_SCK, PIN_DS18B20_DATA), matching how the framework handles GPS and buttons. DS18B20 register access is now GPIO-bank-aware (pins >= 32 supported) and gated to ARCH_ESP32; HX711 is portable Arduino API with no arch gate. Heltec V3 opts in with its existing wiring (48/47/4).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not open the port with a second serial.Serial reader next to SerialInterface.
Line 32 opens port with pyserial. Line 51 opens the same port again with SerialInterface. Both readers then take bytes from one stream. The listener thread can take bytes from the protobuf framing that SerialInterface needs during its config handshake. The handshake can then stall or fail. On Windows, the second open fails because the port is already in use.
The listener also cannot capture the expected lines. When SerialInterface connects, the firmware switches the serial link to protobuf API mode. The device then stops sending plain-text log lines. The tare and calibrate log lines appear after the connection, so the tool usually prints "(no HX711-related lines captured)".
Use one connection. Pass a debugOut callback to SerialInterface and filter the log lines there. Then wait before close().

Per code review: keep the shared heltec_v3 variant untouched and move the HX711/DS18B20 pin defines into a dedicated variant so stock Heltec V3 builds do not register phantom sensors on floating pins. - New variants/esp32s3/heltec_v3_hive: same board as heltec-v3 (hw_model 43, same precedent as tracksenger sharing 48), flasher entry 'Heltec V3 (Beehive sensors)' - Stock heltec-v3 builds contain zero HX711/DS18B20 symbols (verified with nm); hive builds register the sensors - Drivers remain generic and compile everywhere
The watch script opened the serial port twice (a raw listener thread next to the meshtastic SerialInterface), which races for bytes on the same stream, and plain-text logs stop once the protobuf API link is established anyway. setscale.py alone is the supported tool; use any serial monitor alongside it when logs are needed.
Summary
Adds two non-I²C environmental sensors as variant-opt-in drivers, plus a fix for device telemetry on power-saving SENSOR nodes.
HX711 load cell (weight): bit-banged 24-bit ADC, 8-sample averaging, tare +
calibration via the existing
set_scaleadmin message (tag 23), persisted to/ prefs/hx711.dat, reportsenvironment_metrics.weight.DS18B20 temperature probe: bit-banged 1-Wire with direct GPIO register access ( Arduino
digitalWriteoverhead violates 1-Wire slot timing — validated on hardware after fixing CRC corruption from slow GPIO calls), CRC8 scratchpad validation, reportsenvironment_metrics.temperature. Direct DS18B20 support previously existed via the OneWire/DS18B20 libraries and was removed in the #1574 sensor cleanup; this reintroduces it with zero external dependencies.DeviceTelemetry start-delay fix: the framework start delay (30s + 15s/module) exceeds the ~15s wake window of a power-saving SENSOR node, so battery/voltage telemetry would never transmit. Power-saving SENSOR nodes now send device telemetry ~5s after boot. Happy to split this into a separate PR if preferred.
Boards opt in via
variant.hpin defines (Heltec V3 included: 48/47 and GPIO4). Logic is hardware-validated on Heltec V3 (in field service monitoring a beehive scale).Motivation
Enables Meshtastic nodes as stand-alone sensor platforms (participatory science, hive
monitoring, agriculture) beyond the I²C-only sensor set.
Testing
Hardware-tested on Heltec V3: drivers in continuous field service (weight +
temperature telemetry over LoRa), DeviceTelemetry fix verified via serial logs on a power-saving SENSOR node. Other boards not tested — but the drivers only compile for boards whose variant.h declares their pins, so no other target is affected (compile-verified on tbeam: drivers correctly excluded).
