An initiator that did not hold the responder in NodeDB could not complete manual key verification: DO_VERIFY logged "Attempted to commit key, but unknown node" and the key was never marked verified. KeyVerificationModule consumes the responder's hash2 reply, so module dispatch stops before RoutingModule sniffs the packet into NodeDB and no entry is created. commitVerifiedRemoteNode() assumed one existed. When it does not, commit the pending key the reply carried (the key the user has just confirmed) through commitRemoteKey(), which creates the entry. DO_VERIFY with a matching nonce, and the on-screen Accept callbacks, called commitVerifiedRemoteNode() in any state. The app learns the nonce at the security-number prompt, so an early DO_VERIFY (or one after a wrong number) committed the unchecked pending key as ManuallyVerified. Require SENDER_AWAITING_USER or RECEIVER_AWAITING_USER before committing. Key verification: initiator fails to commit an unknown responder
If the initiating node did not already hold the responder in its NodeDB, manual key verification could not finish on the initiator side. Confirming (
DO_VERIFY) loggedAttempted to commit key, but unknown node, and the responder's key was never marked verified. The responder side completed normally.Cause
When the initiator receives the responder's hash2 reply,
KeyVerificationModule::handleReceivedProtobufreturnstrue. That stops module dispatch beforeRoutingModulepasses the packet toMeshService::handleFromRadio()→NodeDB::updateFrom(), so no NodeDB entry is created for the responder.commitVerifiedRemoteNode()assumed one always existed. The responder side works because its handler returnsfalsefor the initiate message, so routing records the initiator.Fix
In
commitVerifiedRemoteNode(), when there is no NodeDB entry but the handshake left a pending key, commit that key throughNodeDB::commitRemoteKey(..., KeyCommitTrust::ManuallyVerified). That call already creates the entry, and the rest of the function runs as before. The pending key is the one the user has just confirmed, which is the trust levelcommitRemoteKeyis meant for. When an entry already exists, nothing changes.Testing
On a two-radio bench (Axiometa Genesis Mini, ESP32-S3; MeshStick SX1262 on native
meshtasticd), each node first removed the other from its NodeDB:Node 0x61c8f5bd manually verified ...andNode 0x5bb7b515 manually verified ...), in Strict and in Compatible. The initiator's NodeDB then holds the responder's correct key withis_key_manually_verifiedset../bin/run-tests.sh -e native -f test_fuzz_packets: clean. No unit test is included. Reaching this state needs the module's private handshake state, driven through a mock router.
