Description

This follows up on two PRs by @xtantaudio:

Most of #1422 has since been fixed on main by the Settings restructure in #1463. #1421 targets the editor as it was before #1463, so it can't be applied as-is. Its approach is still the right one, so this PR rebuilds it on current main and adds the cases a review turned up. Credit for finding these problems, and for the per-section reconcile design and the tests, goes to @xtantaudio, co-author on the SDK and test commits.

What #1463 already covers from #1422

Issue in #1422 On main
LoRa form blocked by a required serialHalOnly Removed from the schema; kept on the device when saving
Bluetooth PIN required to be six digits outside fixed-PIN mode fixedPin allows 0-999999; six digits only for FIXED_PIN
Channel channelNum capped at 0-7 The new channel dialog's schema no longer validates it
Channel mute flag reset on save Copied from the existing channel when the edit is staged
Channel with missing settings Handled with defaults in draftFromChannel and staging
Position precision values the dropdown doesn't offer Clamped by normalizePositionPrecision
Zero-length PSK on regenerate New dialog falls back to 32 bytes

ConfigEditor.commit() changes

  • Edits made during a save are kept. The payload is taken before the first await and sent as-is. Anything edited afterwards stays dirty for the next commit. This was found by running fix: LoRa/Channels/Bluetooth forms silently fail validation #1422's MQTT test against current main.
  • Only what was sent becomes the baseline (from fix: config commit blanket-clears dirty flags for unsent sections #1421). A device packet for an unsent section that arrives mid-commit is no longer rolled back and shown as dirty. The owner baseline only changes when the owner was sent.
  • Disconnect during a commit. A connection generation counter means a commit that finishes after a disconnect returns an error and doesn't write its payload back into the cleared editor.
  • Commits run one at a time. A commit requested during another waits for it, then sends whatever is still dirty, so two beginEditSettings/commitEditSettings pairs never interleave.
  • A failed send closes the transaction. The protocol has no abort message, so after a failed send the editor sends commitEditSettings rather than leaving the radio with an open transaction, and keeps everything dirty for a retry. This is a judgment call for reviewers: it persists whatever the radio already applied before the failure.
  • Re-queued admin messages are matched one-for-one, so the same object queued again mid-commit is still sent.
  • Empty transactions are skipped (from fix: config commit blanket-clears dirty flags for unsent sections #1421).

Web

Test infrastructure

  • interceptAdminMessages(client) in @meshtastic/sdk/testing records decoded admin messages and can hold or fail individual sends. hold() returns a reached promise, so in-flight tests wait for the commit to be held rather than for a fixed tick.
  • renderSettingsForm (web) builds the fake radio, registry and providers, and removes the device and client after each test.

Related Issues

Supersedes #1422. Builds on #1421. Follows #1463.

Changes Made

  • packages/sdk/.../ConfigEditor.ts: payload snapshot, per-section reconcile, serialised commits, connection generation, failure handling
  • packages/sdk/.../ConfigEditor.test.ts: a test per case above
  • packages/sdk/src/core/testing/interceptAdminMessages.ts: new test helper
  • apps/web/src/pages/Settings/index.tsx, ui.json: pending-after-save toast
  • apps/web/src/tests/renderSettingsForm.tsx, MQTT.test.tsx, DeviceConfig.test.tsx: shared harness and save-flow tests

Testing Done

  • @meshtastic/sdk: 177 tests pass. Each new commit test fails against the previous ConfigEditor.ts on this branch (6 of the 7; the in-flight edit test already passed there).
  • meshtastic-web: 595 tests pass.
  • pnpm check (oxlint + oxfmt) passes; tsc on @meshtastic/sdk is clean.
  • tsc on apps/web reports 176 errors, the same as main, none in these files (CI doesn't run it).
  • No test for the new toast; it's a two-line branch in handleSave, and the Settings page has no test harness yet.
  • Not tested on real hardware.

Checklist

  • Code follows project style guidelines
  • Documentation has been updated or added
  • Tests have been added or updated

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Configuration edits made while a save is in progress are retained for the next save instead of being lost or incorrectly marked as saved.
    • Saving MQTT and device settings preserves other settings that were not changed. Bluetooth PIN validation now reflects the selected pairing mode.
  • User Experience
    • When changes remain unsaved after a save, a notification indicates that they are still pending.

ConfigEditor.commit() read the working copy again after its async sends
and then cleared every dirty flag, so a section edited while a save was
in flight was marked saved without ever being sent. The edit was dropped
silently: the form showed it, the device never got it.

Snapshot the working copy, dirty sections and admin messages when the
commit starts, send from that snapshot, make it the new baseline, and
recompute dirtiness. Anything changed during the commit stays dirty for
the next one.

The regression was found by the save-flow tests proposed in meshtastic#1422.

Adds end-to-end tests that drive the real forms through ConfigEditor and
decode what goes out on the wire:

- MQTT `enabled` and a device-config flag reach the radio as `true`
- a toggle flipped during an unrelated in-flight save stays pending
- Bluetooth saves on a radio with no fixed PIN, but still requires six
  digits for FIXED_PIN pairing

Adapted from meshtastic#1422 to the Settings layout introduced in meshtastic#1463 (labels
"MQTT Enabled" and "Double Tap as Button").

📝 Walkthrough

ConfigEditor.commit() serializes commits and sends captured configuration and message data. Changes made during a commit remain pending for a later commit. The settings page reports when changes remain pending. SDK and web tests cover commit behavior and transmitted settings.

Changes: ConfigEditor commit snapshots

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture, send, and reconcile snapshots
packages/sdk/src/features/config/domain/ConfigEditor.ts
commit() queues commit requests and captures configuration and message data before sending. It reconciles only the sent snapshot, preserving changes made during the commit. It handles empty snapshots, send failures, and disconnects.
Intercept and test commit traffic
packages/sdk/src/core/testing/interceptAdminMessages.ts, packages/sdk/src/core/testing/index.ts, packages/sdk/src/features/config/ConfigEditor.test.ts
The testing interceptor records, holds, and fails admin-message sends. Tests cover concurrent changes, inbound packets, owner updates, disconnects, queued messages, sequential commit requests, and send failures.
Verify web settings commits and pending edits
apps/web/src/tests/renderSettingsForm.tsx, apps/web/src/components/PageComponents/ModuleConfig/MQTT.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/PageComponents/Settings/DeviceConfig.test.tsx, apps/web/src/pages/Settings/index.tsx, apps/web/public/i18n/locales/en/ui.json
Web tests check transmitted MQTT, device, and Bluetooth settings, including edits made during a commit and PIN validation. When the editor remains dirty after a successful commit, the settings page displays the pending-save toast and skips the success toast and form reset.

Review follow-ups on the commit snapshot:

- Update the baseline per section that was sent, so a device packet for
an unsent section that arrives mid-commit isn't rolled back and shown
as dirty. The owner baseline only changes when the owner was sent.
- Track a connection generation. A commit that finishes after a
disconnect no longer writes its payload back into the cleared editor.
- Remove one queued admin message per message sent, so the same object
queued again mid-commit is still sent.
- Run commits one at a time. A commit requested during another waits
for it, then sends what is still dirty.
- When a send fails after beginEditSettings, close the transaction
(there is no abort message) and leave everything dirty for a retry.
- Skip empty transactions.

The per-section reconcile and empty-transaction check follow meshtastic#1421.
Adds interceptAdminMessages to @meshtastic/sdk/testing for holding and
failing individual sends, with a test for each case above.

If the editor still has pending changes after a commit, show a
"save again" toast and keep the form dirty instead of "All configuration
changes have been saved".
- renderSettingsForm builds the fake radio, registry and providers and
removes the device and client after each test.
- In-flight tests wait for the held send to be reached instead of a
fixed tick, so a slower send path can't make them hang.
- Use the SDK's typed sent-config decoders instead of local copies.

setRadioSection/setModuleSection stored undefined and marked the
section dirty, but collectPayload skips undefined sections, so the
commit sent nothing and the editor stayed dirty. Restore the baseline
section instead.
