break(core): make ThemeConfig an augmentable interface of @docusaurus/types, add useThemeConfig() core hook (AI-assisted) - #12723
TypeScript types only. Site configs don't break: docusaurus.config.ts with satisfies Config or satisfies Preset.ThemeConfig still type-checks (the website and the TS init template do).
ThemeConfig of @docusaurus/types used to be a plain {[key: string]: unknown} record. It is now an interface that themes extend with their own fields, and our themes do: theme-common adds the classic theme fields, and Algolia, Mermaid and live code block add theirs. When those types are loaded:
ThemeConfig has required fields such as navbar, mermaid or liveCodeBlock. Code that used ThemeConfig to mean "any theme config" must use its own type instead, like {[key: string]: unknown} or the theme's slice type. Object literals typed as a full ThemeConfig must include all those fields, or use a narrower type.
The ThemeConfig / UserThemeConfig types of @docusaurus/theme-common are now re-exports of the @docusaurus/types ones, and interfaces don't have implicit index signatures.
Motivation
Address the TODO Docusaurus v4: use interface + declaration merging to enhance of useThemeConfig.ts.
The theme config type was a closed type alias in @docusaurus/theme-common, so each theme defined its own type and cast useThemeConfig() to it. Now:
@docusaurus/types declares 2 generic interfaces that every theme and plugin can extend: ThemeConfig (after validation and normalization) and UserThemeConfig (as written in the site config). They aren't tied to the classic theme.
The new @docusaurus/useThemeConfig core hook returns the typed ThemeConfig. Every plugin can rely on it, not just themes built on theme-common.
siteConfig.themeConfig uses the same type, and Config.themeConfig uses UserThemeConfig. So satisfies Config alone now autocompletes themeConfig.
Both interfaces keep the [key: string]: unknown index signature, so fields of themes that don't declare types keep working.
theme-common adds the classic theme fields (navbar, footer, prism…), because its own hooks read them. Its useThemeConfig() now calls the core hook, and its ThemeConfig / UserThemeConfig exports re-export the @docusaurus/types ones.
Preset.ThemeConfig is now an alias of UserThemeConfig. The preset loads the theme-common and Algolia types, so the alias includes their fields.
algolia is optional on the normalized ThemeConfig, because the classic preset loads the Algolia types but only enables the theme when themeConfig.algolia is set. useAlgoliaThemeConfig() still returns the non-optional type.
The existing per-theme exports (ThemeConfig, UserThemeConfig, ThemeConfigAlgolia) and hooks (useAlgoliaThemeConfig(), useMermaidThemeConfig(), theme-common's useThemeConfig()) are unchanged. There are new exports for each slice: ThemeConfigMermaid, ThemeConfigLiveCodeBlock and UserThemeConfigAlgolia.
The .d.ts files of our themes are ambient scripts. A top-level declare module '@docusaurus/types' would replace the @docusaurus/types types instead of extending them, so the extension is nested in each theme's own declare module block. That works with TS 6 and 7.
Two places used the generic type as "any theme config". Core's default themeConfig: {} now has a cast. theme-classic's DEFAULT_CONFIG uses a new ClassicThemeConfig type, exported from @docusaurus/theme-common/internal.
Test Plan
pnpm --filter website typecheck. I also used a temporary file to check that:
wrong values for classic and Algolia fields fail with satisfies Config and satisfies Preset.ThemeConfig;
the Algolia askAi string form passes;
useThemeConfig() and useDocusaurusContext().siteConfig.themeConfig are typed;
the TS init template config passes.
pnpm typecheck:tests, pnpm lint, unit tests of the touched packages (alias snapshots updated for the new core hook)
Added a useThemeConfig hook to access the site’s validated, normalized theme configuration, with types that include fields provided by themes and plugins.
Improved TypeScript support and autocomplete for theme configuration, including live code blocks, Mermaid, and Algolia.
Documentation
Added guidance and examples for using the hook and extending theme configuration types.
…that themes can augment (AI-assisted)
Themes and plugins now add their theme config fields to the
@docusaurus/theme-common ThemeConfig/UserThemeConfig interfaces with
declaration merging, instead of casting useThemeConfig() to local types.

…types, add core useThemeConfig() hook (AI-assisted)
ThemeConfig and UserThemeConfig are now generic interfaces of
@docusaurus/types that every theme and plugin can augment, including
theme-common for the classic theme fields. Config.themeConfig uses
UserThemeConfig, and the new @docusaurus/useThemeConfig core hook
returns the typed ThemeConfig.

Walkthrough
The changes add a core useThemeConfig hook and separate user-provided theme configuration from normalized configuration. Classic and plugin themes augment shared types with their fields, and theme consumers use the hook to read configuration.
Changes: Theme configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Core configuration types and hook packages/docusaurus-types/src/*, packages/docusaurus/src/client/exports/useThemeConfig.ts, packages/docusaurus/src/server/configValidation.ts, packages/docusaurus-module-type-aliases/src/index.d.ts
ThemeConfig becomes a mergeable interface, and UserThemeConfig represents configuration before validation. The core hook returns siteConfig.themeConfig from Docusaurus context.
The classic theme fields augment the shared configuration types. The classic default configuration uses ClassicThemeConfig, and the preset uses UserThemeConfig for its user-provided theme configuration.
Plugin theme configuration and consumers packages/docusaurus-theme-live-codeblock/src/*, packages/docusaurus-theme-mermaid/src/*, packages/docusaurus-theme-search-algolia/src/*
The three theme packages add their fields to the shared configuration types. Live-code-block and Mermaid consumers use the core hook; Algolia search reads settings through useAlgoliaThemeConfig() and keeps explicit props as overrides.
Website typing and documentation website/docusaurus.config.ts, website/docs/api/plugin-methods/static-methods.mdx, website/docs/docusaurus-core.mdx
The website configuration uses Preset.ThemeConfig with a type reference for live-code-block fields. The documentation describes the hook and declaration merging for theme configuration fields.
Plugin fields may remain untyped until their declarations are explicitly loaded. This is a bounded documentation issue.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 71544
The shared typing contract changes, but the inspected configuration access paths retain the same runtime data, validation controls, and caller precedence. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new public entrypoint expands API convenience for client consumers, not access to a previously unavailable configuration source. Its returned data was already accessible through Docusaurus context; the inspected change does not introduce a remote request entrypoint or additional credential authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The normalized interface is a compile-time contract, not a new runtime validator. The server default remains an empty object with a type assertion, and live-codeblock retains its Joi validation and defaulting. Comparison with the PR base shows no control removal in these validation changes.

Explanation
The title names the main change: ThemeConfig becomes an augmentable interface in @docusaurus/types, and a core useThemeConfig() hook is added. The raw summary confirms both: ThemeConfig and UserThemeConfig are now interfaces in docusaurus-types/src/config.d.ts, and the new @docusaurus/useThemeConfig module and useThemeConfig hook were added. The title also flags the breaking change. The title is long (121 characters), but it is specific and accurate.

Document the declaration-loading prerequisite.
A package-name entry configures the theme at runtime, but it does not load its TypeScript augmentation. Without an explicit type reference, useThemeConfig().liveCodeBlock remains unknown. The new sentence says that installation alone provides the fields, although the API documentation already states that the theme types must be loaded.
Suggested fix
-Its TypeScript type includes the fields declared by the themes and plugins you installed.+Once the corresponding theme and plugin types are loaded, its TypeScript type includes their declared fields. See the [TypeScript types documentation](api/plugin-methods/static-methods.mdx#validateThemeConfig-types).
