Issue/581 JSON 404 for clients that ask for JSON - #582
Conversation
Checks whether the Accept header lists application/json, ignoring media type parameters, surrounding spaces and case, so a header such as "application/json, text/plain, */*" counts as JSON. Not used yet.
…pplication/json
page_not_found_response() returned the JSON 404 only when the Accept
header was exactly "application/json", so clients such as axios
("application/json, text/plain, */*") got the HTML page. It now decides
with Request::expectsJson(). It takes an optional request, and
HandleRouteNotFoundStage passes the one from its context.
…thing as JSON Request::expectsJson() now also returns true when a listed media type contains "/json" or "+json" (application/vnd.api+json, application/problem+json), and for an AJAX request without an Accept header or with "*/*" first, as Laravel does. An AJAX request that asks for text/html still gets HTML.

- Line 142: Update the AJAX media-type selection around the `isAjax()` check to
detect an explicit `text/html` entry anywhere in the accepted media types before
applying the wildcard fallback, so `*/*, text/html` selects HTML just like
`text/html, */*`.
- Line 147: Update the JSON media-type check in the request header logic to
match application/json exactly and recognize +json only at the end of a media
type; update the application/jsonp assertion in HttpRequestHeaderTest to expect
false.

…son() Review fixes. application/json must match exactly and +json only as a suffix, so application/jsonp, text/json and application/json-seq are no longer taken for JSON. An AJAX request that lists text/html anywhere gets HTML, so "*/*, text/html" behaves like "text/html, */*". The Accept parsing moved to a private method and uses the ContentType constants.
Closes #581
What changed
Request::expectsJson(): true when theAcceptheader lists a JSON media type (application/jsonor a+jsontype such asapplication/vnd.api+json), ignoring parameters, spaces and case, or for an AJAX request (X-Requested-With) that accepts any content type. An AJAX request that asks fortext/htmlstill gets HTML.page_not_found_response()decides withexpectsJson()instead of comparing the whole header withapplication/json. It takes an optional request, andHandleRouteNotFoundStagepasses the one from its context; called without an argument it works as documented. Why
The 404 was JSON only when
Acceptwas exactlyapplication/json. Real clients send more: axios sendsapplication/json, text/plain, */*, others add; charset=utf-8, JSON:API clients sendapplication/vnd.api+json, and jQuery's$.ajaxsends*/*withX-Requested-With. All of them got the HTML 404 page, so API consumers broke on unknown routes. The rule follows Laravel'sexpectsJson()for+jsontypes and AJAX requests.Breaking changes
None.
page_not_found_response()gains an optional parameter; the 404 body, page and status are unchanged. Clients that list JSON now get the JSON 404 they asked for.How behavior was proven
quantum/projectagainstmaster: of 15 web requests, only the four 404s for JSON clients changed from HTML to JSON (axios,application/json; charset=utf-8,application/vnd.api+json, AJAX with*/*). The browser 404, the exactapplication/json404, pages, API responses,OPTIONSand the view-cache miss and hit are identical, as are the console commands.application/jsonp, which now counts as JSON.Notes for reviewers
