Closes #593

What changed

  • App type on the context: AppContext takes a third, required $type (AppType::WEB or AppType::CONSOLE) and returns it from getType(). AppFactory passes the type it creates; WebContext and ConsoleContext copy it. Two helpers in src/App/Helpers/app.php, is_web_app() and is_console_app(), read it, so no package compares the type itself.
  • Error handler: ErrorHandler::handleException() chooses the console output with is_console_app() instead of PHP_SAPI === 'cli', the last SAPI check in src.
  • Logger: in debug mode LoggerFactory forces the in-memory message adapter only for the web app, where the toolbar reads it. A console command logs to the configured adapter, or the one it asks for, at every level. MessageAdapter keeps the last logging.message.limit messages (default 1000, 0 keeps all) and drops the oldest.
  • Mailer: at the start of each send(), the transport log is cut to its last mailer.transport_log_limit lines (default 1000, 0 keeps all). It is the one point every send reaches, also after the previous one threw (PHPMailer is created with exceptions on), so the log holds at most the limit plus the lines of the send in progress. Both writers, the SMTP Debugoutput callback and the failed-send errors, are unchanged.
  • Database: Idiorm's logging option reads is_debug_mode() instead of the raw app.debug. In debug mode the web app and the console keep their query log as before.
  • Values from .env: .env values arrive as text, and three more places used them unconverted. MailerTrait::send() reads mailer.mail_trap with FILTER_VALIDATE_BOOLEAN; SessionAuthAdapter casts remember_lifetime to int before Cookie::set(); RedisAdapter, MemcachedAdapter and RedisRateLimitAdapter cast port to int.
  • Config: the test fixtures get logging.message.limit and mailer.transport_log_limit; each package reads only its own key.
  • Changelog: the 3.1.0 entries describe the change against 3.0.3.

Why

Since #539 the toolbar reads its tabs from data the packages keep in memory. A web request ends after its response, but a console command or worker in debug mode kept every log line and every SMTP line for its whole run, and nothing read them:

  • the console's log lines went to the in-memory adapter and were never written anywhere; CronManager's explicit single logger was replaced too;
  • the mailer's transport log was never emptied, and the mailer instance lives for the whole process.

Idiorm received app.debug unconverted. DEBUG=false from .env arrives as the text "false", which PHP reads as true, so every query was kept in memory with debug mode off, in production too. The same cause made MAIL_TRAP=false keep trapping every mail, and made a REMEMBER_LIFETIME or a Memcached port set in .env throw a TypeError.

Breaking changes

  • AppContext::__construct() takes a third, required $type. Code that goes through AppFactory is unaffected; code that creates an AppContext itself must pass the type.

Testing

  • New tests, each failing before its change: the context type (AppContextTest, AppFactoryTest, WebContextTest, ConsoleContextTest); is_web_app() and is_console_app() (AppHelperTest); the web branch of handleException() reached through the public method (ErrorHandlerTest); the console adapters in debug mode (LoggerFactoryTest); the logger limit (MessageAdapterTest, LoggerFactoryTest); the mailer limit, including the lines of the send in progress and a failed SMTP send that throws (MailerAdapterTraitTest, SmtpAdapterTest); the text "false" turning Idiorm's logging off (IdiormDbalTest); mail_trap as the text "false" sending through the transport (SmtpAdapterTest); a "remember me" login with remember_lifetime as text (SessionAuthAdapterTest); the Memcached adapter connecting with the port as text (MemcachedAdapterTest).
  • Tests that pin unchanged behavior and pass before and after: 0 keeps everything, an explicit logger(LoggerType::MESSAGE) in console debug mode, Idiorm logging in debug mode for web and console.
  • The console adapter and stage tests now create a console context.
  • Full suite compared test by test with master: 29 tests added, none removed, none changed outcome.
  • Checked on the starter project: the home page renders with the debug toolbar and php qt list boots.
  • The two Redis adapters get the same port-as-text test (RedisAdapterTest, RedisRateLimitAdapterTest). They run in CI; the Redis extension used locally accepts text, so they guard extensions that type the port.
  • Not covered end to end: the SMTP limit with a real server; it is tested through PHPMailer's Debugoutput callback.

Notes for reviewers

  • Idiorm's query log is still unbounded in debug mode. Idiorm calls its own logging through self:: and keeps the log in a protected static property, so it cannot be capped from outside; switching it off in the console would empty Database::lastQuery() there. Capping it needs Quantum to record the queries itself, as a follow-up.
  • The mailer reads its limit in send(), next to mail_trap, the way the trait already reads mailer-wide settings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added ways to identify whether the current application is running in web or console mode.
    • Console debug logging now respects the selected or configured log adapter, while web debug logging continues to use the message log.
    • Added configurable limits for stored debug messages and mail transport logs. Both default to retaining the most recent 1,000 entries.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Query logging now correctly follows debug mode, including when its setting is provided as the text value "false".
    • Exception output is selected based on application mode, so web apps render errors as web responses and console apps use console output.
    • Mail-trap settings and text-formatted values for remember-me lifetimes and cache or rate-limit ports are now handled correctly.

AppContext takes the type (AppType::WEB or AppType::CONSOLE) as a required third argument and returns it from getType(). AppFactory passes the type it creates, and WebContext and ConsoleContext copy it.
ErrorHandler::handleException() reads the app type from the context instead of checking PHP_SAPI. The console adapter tests now create a console context.
…ebug mode

LoggerFactory forces the in-memory message adapter in debug mode only for the web app, where the debug toolbar reads it. A console command in debug mode logs to the configured or requested adapter, at every level.
MessageAdapter keeps the last logging.message.limit messages (default 1000) and drops the oldest; 0 keeps every message.
…re each send

MailerTrait::send() first cuts the transport log to its last mailer.transport_log_limit lines (default 1000); 0 keeps every line. Every send reaches that point, also after the previous one threw, so the log holds at most the limit plus the lines of the send in progress.
…query log outside debug mode

The helpers read the app type from the context; LoggerFactory and ErrorHandler use them instead of comparing the type themselves. Idiorm's logging option reads is_debug_mode(), so DEBUG=false from .env, which arrives as the text "false", no longer keeps every query.

📝 Walkthrough

The change records WEB or CONSOLE in AppContext and uses that type for logger selection and exception output. It adds configurable limits for message and mailer logs, sets Idiorm query logging from debug mode, and casts selected configured lifetime and port values to integers.

An invalid mail-trap value in the environment can now cause real emails to be delivered instead of trapped, so it should be rejected before merge. The mailer log limit can also be exceeded during a single send, which has minor impact. A stale app context after cross-type app reuse is an existing edge case that only affects sequential use in one process.

Explanation

The changes implement the coding requirements in #593. AppContext stores the type, AppFactory and both context wrappers preserve it, and the app helpers expose the distinction. ErrorHandler uses is_console_app() instead of PHP_SAPI. Debug logging uses the web message adapter only for web apps; console logging uses the requested or configured adapter. MessageAdapter and the mailer transport log use separate limits, with 0 unlimited. Idiorm uses is_debug_mode(). The described tests cover both app types, limits, failed sends, and text "false" values. The PR reports the required static checks as passing and reports the full test suite comparison.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR also changes behavior outside #593. SessionAuthAdapter casts session.remember_lifetime, MemcachedAdapter casts its port, and RedisAdapter and RedisRateLimitAdapter cast their ports. Their tests and related changelog entries are not needed for the app-type, debug-buffer, console-logging, or Idiorm requirements in #593. The mail-trap boolean conversion is also separate from the transport-log limit requirement.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated remember-lifetime, cache-port, rate-limit-port, and mail-trap conversion changes and their tests and changelog entries, or move them to a separately linked issue.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Restore the context when returning a cached app.

If a process creates a web app, then a console app, AppFactory::create(AppType::WEB, ...) returns the cached web app without restoring its context. is_web_app() then returns false. Debug logs use the wrong adapter, and web exceptions take the console output path. Keep the cached app and its context together, and activate that context on every create() call.

@coderabbitai The cached-app case predates this PR, so it stays out of #594:

  • AppFactory::create() sets the context only when it builds an app (createInstance()), and a cached instance is returned as is. On master, the same sequence (web, then console, then web again) already leaves the console's context active for the web app, including its container and base directory. This PR adds one more field to that context; it does not create the gap.
  • In a real run a process creates one app: public/index.php the web app, php qt the console app. Nothing in the framework creates both in one process, and the tests destroy one app before creating the other.

Restoring the context of a cached app changes AppFactory independently of the debug buffers, so it belongs in its own ticket.

The docstring threshold is not this repository's convention, and composer cs:check, composer phpstan and composer rector:check run in the CI builds of this PR, which pass.

Values from .env arrive as text. MailerTrait::send() reads mailer.mail_trap with FILTER_VALIDATE_BOOLEAN, so MAIL_TRAP=false sends mail; SessionAuthAdapter casts remember_lifetime to int before Cookie::set(); the Redis and Memcached cache adapters and the Redis rate limiter cast port to int.

🟡 Minor · Keep the transport log within mailer.transport_log_limit. · MailerTrait.php:228-229

src/Mailer/Traits/MailerTrait.php:228-229
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the transport log within mailer.transport_log_limit.

The current trim runs before sendEmail(). The SMTP Debugoutput callback appends entries during the dialogue, and failed sends append transport errors afterward. With a limit of 1, the added test intentionally expects three entries after two failed sends. This behavior conflicts with issue #593's bounded-buffer contract.

The excess is limited to entries from the current SMTP dialogue. It does not create an unbounded accumulation across sends. Enforce the positive limit on both append paths, keep 0 unlimited, and update the test to assert the strict bound.
