Problem and motivation

#1110 made @sapiom/tools send the tenant API key only over https (or plain http to a loopback host) and drop it on a cross-origin redirect. The rule lived in tools only: @sapiom/analytics-core, @sapiom/core, @sapiom/agent-core and @sapiom/mcp each set x-api-key / x-sapiom-api-key themselves, so all four still send the key in the clear to an http:// host and let fetch carry it across a redirect (Node's fetch strips authorization on an origin change, not custom headers).

Patching each client would leave the next one free to repeat the mistake. This PR gives the key one owner and makes CI enforce it.

Summary and scope

One owner of the key. The policy module moves from packages/tools/src/_client/credential-policy.ts to a new subpath, @sapiom/analytics-core/credential (the zero-dependency package tools, agent-core and mcp already depend on; core gains it as its only dependency). Its new credentialFetch(fetchImpl, url, init, { header, value }, policy) is the only code that sets the key header: it checks the channel, sets the header after init.headers (a caller header can neither override nor forge it), and follows redirects with the existing fetchKeepingCredential.

Client Change Refusal
@sapiom/tools Transport.fetch calls credentialFetch; same rules, same messages unchanged
@sapiom/analytics-core HttpSender.send calls credentialFetch untrusted endpoint: batch sent without the key (analytics never fails the host); refused redirect hop: batch dropped, not retried
@sapiom/core HttpClient gets the key as a credential, not a header; new SapiomClient({ allowInsecureHttp }) CredentialChannelError, never retried
@sapiom/agent-core send and openStream call credentialFetch; new createClient({ allowInsecureHttp }) the existing NETWORK error, reason in hint
@sapiom/mcp appLinksFetch calls credentialFetch the existing { kind: "network" } result

CredentialPolicy gains label and optIn, so each refusal names its own package and opt-in. A refused channel throws CredentialChannelError extends TypeError, so existing catches still apply and core's retry loop can skip it. The policy tolerates an injected fetch that answers a bare { ok, status } (analytics' FetchLike): no headers means the redirect is returned as is.

Enforced next time. scripts/credential-header-check.mjs (pnpm credential-header:check, new step in the examples CI job) fails when non-test code under packages/*/src sets either key header as an object key, a bracket assignment, or a set / setHeader / append argument, anywhere but the shared module. Its allowlist names exact paths, and an entry whose file no longer matches fails too, so the list can only shrink. It reads literals: a header name in a variable, or the key as Authorization: Bearer, is for review to catch.

Out of scope: packages/harness (Agent Studio). Its four files that set the key are allowlisted and tracked in SAP-4112, with its Bearer sites. A per-wrapper allowInsecureHttp option on @sapiom/fetch / axios / node-http / langchain is not added; SAPIOM_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP=1 covers them.

Tests and documentation

  • analytics-core/src/credential.spec.ts (moved from tools): adds CredentialChannelError, per-client wording, mayCarryCredential, and credentialFetch (forged header replaced, no check without a key, minimal fetch responses).
  • analytics-core/src/__tests__/http-sender-channel.test.ts, core/src/client/HttpClient.channel.test.ts, new cases in agent-core/src/__tests__/client.test.ts, mcp/src/tools/app-links-api.test.ts: refusal before any fetch call, loopback and both opt-ins allowed, cross-origin 307 drops the key, same-origin keeps it, no retry of a refused channel.
  • scripts/credential-header-check.test.mjs: every flagged form, the non-flagged ones (a header name as a value, a type union, a Set entry, a comparison), a stale allowlist entry, and the real tree.
  • Existing assertions changed only where the key moved: core's defaults.headers → defaults.credential. CredentialChannelError keeps name: "TypeError", so tools' usage events and logs are unchanged.
  • analytics-core/CONTRACT.md: when the key is sent.

Compatibility and release impact

  • Breaking or externally visible changes: core, agent-core and mcp now refuse plain http:// to a non-loopback host (a Docker service name, a LAN IP) before sending, naming the opt-in; analytics goes anonymous there instead. Redirects to another origin drop the key in every client. Core's deprecated getHttpClient().defaults.headers no longer carries the key (defaults.credential does).
  • Changeset: Added (analytics-core, core, agent-core minor; mcp, tools patch).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • API keys are sent only over HTTPS or to loopback addresses by default. Plain HTTP to other hosts is refused unless insecure HTTP is explicitly enabled.
    • API keys are not forwarded to other origins after redirects. Analytics batches are sent without a key to disallowed HTTP endpoints and dropped if redirected to a refused channel; other requests to refused channels fail.
  • New Features
    • Core and agent clients support an allowInsecureHttp option for opting into HTTP to non-loopback hosts.
    • API credentials are available through the HTTP client’s credential default instead of its headers.

…forced in CI [SAP-4106]

The channel rule from #1110 lived in @sapiom/tools only, so analytics-core,
core, agent-core and mcp kept sending the key over plain http and across
cross-origin redirects. The policy module moves to the new
@sapiom/analytics-core/credential subpath, and credentialFetch becomes the
one function that sets the key header for every client. A refused channel is
a CredentialChannelError (a TypeError) that core does not retry.

scripts/credential-header-check.mjs fails CI when packages/*/src sets the key
header by hand; the four harness files are allowlisted until SAP-4112.

📝 Walkthrough

SDK transports now use shared credential-channel and redirect handling. Selected clients support an insecure-HTTP opt-in. Core exposes credentials in HTTP client defaults. CI checks literal tenant-key header writes.

Changes: Credential Transport

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared credential policy and fetch
packages/analytics-core/src/credential.ts, packages/analytics-core/src/credential.spec.ts, packages/analytics-core/src/types.ts, packages/analytics-core/package.json, packages/analytics-core/CONTRACT.md, .changeset/sdk-shared-credential-transport.md
analytics-core exports credentialFetch, credential policy types, and channel checks. Shared transport applies channel and redirect rules to credentials. The endpoint contract and changeset describe these rules.
Analytics batch transport
packages/analytics-core/src/http-sender.ts, packages/analytics-core/src/__tests__/http-sender-channel.test.ts
HttpSender uses shared credential handling. It sends batches without a key when the endpoint cannot carry credentials and drops batches redirected to a refused channel.
Core client credentials
packages/core/src/client/*, packages/core/package.json, packages/core/README.md
Core passes API and vault keys as credential objects, supports insecure-HTTP configuration, and exposes credentials in HTTP client defaults. Tests cover channel checks, redirects, retries, and key updates.
Agent client transport
packages/agent-core/src/client.ts, packages/agent-core/src/__tests__/client.test.ts
GatewayClient uses shared credential handling for JSON and SSE requests and adds an insecure-HTTP option. Tests cover channel refusal, opt-ins, redirects, and stream reading.
MCP and tools transports
packages/mcp/src/tools/app-links-api.ts, packages/mcp/src/tools/app-links-api.test.ts, packages/mcp/README.md, packages/tools/src/_client/*
MCP App Links and tools use credentialFetch with package-specific policy wording. MCP tests cover channel and redirect behavior. The tools security spec imports shared constants.

The transport applies channel rules to anonymous redirects, preventing strict-policy batches from following non-loopback HTTP redirects. The remaining concern is a focused regression test, not an established production failure, so merge risk is minimal.

credentialFetch read a Headers instance as empty and a tuple list by index.
The credential-header check now matches across lines, so a setter whose
arguments are wrapped no longer passes. Comments now name the harness
allowlist exception instead of claiming every client is covered.

18-23: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Regex patterns miss common header-write forms.

HEADER matches only quoted names, and FORBIDDEN has no pattern for new Headers([["x-api-key", k]]) or Object.fromEntries. Both forms write the header without a match. Mixed-case or computed names also pass. This is a known limit of a regex guard. Document the limit in the file header, or move to an AST-based check later.

(an anonymous analytics batch) no longer has a same-origin http redirect

…plain http [SAP-4106]

Plain http hops are allowed only when the request already started on
http; a request that started on https keeps the policy, so caller headers
such as Authorization cannot follow a redirect onto plaintext.

One rule replaces the start-scheme special case: without a credential,
plain http hops are allowed, but a hop from https to http is refused
wherever it happens in the chain (an https detour back to http, or an
https start redirected to a loopback or opted-in http host).

Reverts 035841b, 46996a5 and d8ac7d9. Exempting keyless requests from
the hop check took three patches to make safe; every hop now uses the same
rule as a keyed request. The cost: an anonymous analytics batch to a
plain-http collector that redirects is dropped, which analytics, being
best-effort, accepts.

90-123: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an anonymous HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect test.

The fixture defaults to apiKey = "sk_live", so this test covers only credentialed redirects. The anonymous test covers an initial HTTP endpoint, not an HTTPS request that redirects to HTTP. A regression that skips the channel check for anonymous redirects could therefore pass.
