Problem and motivation

test (20.x) on main failed sends one relay for identical in-flight retries and logs the refusal once. Jest printed Expected length: 2, Received length: 0, Received array: [] for refused events. The expects above that line had passed. One relay call, and one refusal warning.

The test waited until the stub had recorded two Fetch.failRequest commands, then counted events. The stub records the command when the frame arrives. apply emits refused after settle awaits the CDP reply. A timer can run in that gap.

The same tree passed both Node jobs on #1249. Holding the fail reply for 40ms after the command is recorded reproduces the empty list, and the two events are present on the next turn. The interceptor does emit them.

A wait on two paused events was too early. decide emits paused before the page-origin Runtime.evaluate, and the second request joins the shared flight only after that reply.

#1248 also left two timer gaps in the relay-in-progress tests. A 40ms gap between two waiter deadlines can disappear when a timer fires late. An abort bound of 160ms is tighter than CI timer delay.

Summary and scope

The in-flight retry test waits until the second location.origin command is visible, then one poll later, so the second pause has joined. It releases the shared relay only after that. It then waits until both refused events are visible.

The later-pause test no longer sleeps 40ms. It emits the second pause after the retry post, so that waiter's deadline trails the first by about one poll backoff. The first waiter's deadline is 1.5s, which leaves about a second of that gap when a timer fires late.

The shared-attempt test no longer sleeps 80ms. The second pause joins as soon as the first attempt is in flight. The attempt timeout is 400ms and the total deadline is 5s. The abort must land from 300ms to 2s, which still tells the attempt timer apart from the total deadline. The upper bound is wide because the abort time is a timer, and CI can run that timer late.

The assertions for the original failure stay one relay call, one warning, two Fetch.failRequest commands, and two refused events.

Relay polling, deadlines, and defaults are unchanged. There is no product code change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved coverage for duplicate in-flight relay requests.
    • Added validation that both requests are refused and generate the expected failure responses.
    • Preserved checks for a single relay and warning.

The test counted refused events as soon as the stub had recorded two
Fetch.failRequest commands. The stub records that command when the
frame arrives, and apply emits refused only after the CDP reply
resolves. A poll can see the commands while the event list is still empty.

Wait until both pauses are visible before releasing the shared relay,
and until both refusals are visible before asserting. The test still
requires one relay call, one warning, and two refused events.

📝 Walkthrough

The duplicate in-flight relay test now waits for both origin evaluations and an event-loop turn before checking that both requests are refused and failed. It retains assertions for one relay call and one warning.

The test replaces the fixed delay with synchronization on two Runtime.evaluate("location.origin") commands and a setImmediate turn. It asserts that both requests emit refused events and produce Fetch.failRequest commands, with one relay call and one warning.

Two paused events arrive before the second request reads its page
origin and joins the shared flight. Releasing the gate at that point
lets the first flight finish, and the retry starts a second relay.

Wait until the second location.origin command is visible, then until
the poll that applies its reply has run. After release, wait until both
refused events are visible. The test still requires one relay call, one
warning, two failRequest commands, and two refused events.

Bring in the version bump that landed after the relay deadline change.

Co-authored-by: Rimmely Ewan <ratataque@users.noreply.github.com>
The later-pause test slept 40ms so its second deadline trailed the first.
A late timer on CI can cross both. Wait until the retry is posted, and
give the first waiter 1.5s so the second still has about a second left.

The shared-attempt test bounded the abort to 160ms after an 80ms sleep.
Drop the sleep so the second pause joins immediately, and accept an abort
from 300ms up to 2s. The attempt timeout is 400ms and the total deadline
is 5s, so the bound still tells them apart.

await that signal instead of relying on setImmediate; preserve the assertion
that both requests share one relay and calls remains 1.
