feat(stacks): Introduce stack tiers (core / proven / best-effort) and pin every core and proven image - #940
Refs #712 (phase 1 only; the automated release gate is phase 2)
What this does
Every stack is now core, proven or best-effort. tier: proven in services.yaml marks the stacks courses run on: code-server, Kestra, Marimo and Spark. The promise is that they work on every release, across a teardown and restore, and that their issues are handled first. The release test is not automated yet, and every page that states the promise says so.
Pinning (enforced now)
Every core and proven image names one exact release, never a line. Each is pinned to what its floating tag resolved to today, with the digest compared on the registry, so a fresh server gets what it would have pulled anyway:

code-server's Python packages: the image used to install twelve packages unpinned. It now installs a full lock (stacks/code-server/requirements.txt, compiled from requirements.in). Built locally for linux/amd64: Python 3.13.5, dbt-core 1.12.5, duckdb 2.0.0.
Local tags follow:nexus-code-server:4.143.1 and nexus-marimo:0.23.4-sql-spark. Both are off the latest allow-lists.
Convention tests
New tests in tests/unit/test_stack_conventions.py:
valid tier values;
no tier on a core service;
the proven set is a deliberate list, like the core five;
exact images and support images;
exact Dockerfile FROM and == Python packages, with a -r file traced through its COPY.
Six mutations each fail a test.
Control Plane
D1 column tier (core / proven / best-effort). sync-deployed-state.sh writes it from a fixed set of strings, never the raw yaml value.
Migration:setup-control-plane.yaml adds the column before its Pages deploy.
API:/api/services returns the tier.
UI:
The stack list, category and search pages show a PROVEN badge.
The Stacks page has a Proven only filter (also ?filter=proven), which switches to the list view.
Checked against a mock API in a browser: 4 rows with the filter on, 107 with it off.
Migration failures are no longer swallowed. The column-migration loop in sync-deployed-state.sh used to discard every error. It now treats only "duplicate column" as success and stops on anything else, as migrate_column in setup-control-plane.yaml already did. Exercised against a stub wrangler.
Docs
docs/concepts/stacks.md: a "What each tier promises" section.
docs/stacks/README.md: a tier table and a footnote on the image table.
A note on each proven stack's page.
docs/user-guides/stacks.md.
Pinned versions on the code-server, kestra, marimo and overview pages.
CLAUDE.md, .coderabbit.yaml and .github/copilot-instructions.md: the tier rules, and code-server and marimo removed from the latest allow-list.
A tier:proven label now exists on the repository.
Review on the PR
CodeRabbit (triggered manually after its quota reset): 2 findings, both valid, fixed in 6e8675ca.
/api/services answered 500 between a Pages deploy and the D1 migration (spin-up deploys Pages first). It now retries without tier on exactly "no such column: tier".
The Python pin check missed pip3 install. It now matches every pip spelling, with a test each.
Local CodeRabbit round
Reviewed 822dd0a2: 3 findings, all valid and fixed. The fix commits 11976e1e and 85a79ed4 were not locally reviewed.
The D1 migration loop discarded every error. Fixed: only a duplicate column passes.
The exactness check accepted 1.2.3-latest. Fixed, with a test case.
Proven only also filtered the grid, whose category cards open an unfiltered page. Fixed: the filter lives in the list view.
85a79ed4 exists because the first version of fix 1 used grep -q under pipefail, which test_sigpipe_under_pipefail rejects; it now uses case.
How to test
Run setup-control-plane.yaml first after merge. It adds the tier column, so the badges appear right away. If a spin-up runs first, the Stacks page still works: /api/services falls back to the old columns until the sync migrates D1 (6e8675ca, from CodeRabbit's review), and only the badges are missing for those minutes.
After merge:
gh workflow run setup-control-plane.yaml
In the Control Plane, open Stacks:
code-server, Kestra, Marimo and Spark carry a PROVEN badge;
Proven only lists exactly those four.
Run a teardown and a spin-up. Fresh servers pull the pinned images, and code-server builds from the lock file. Check that code-server, Marimo, Spark, Kestra, Forgejo, Infisical and Grafana come up healthy. In a code-server terminal:
dbt --version
reports 1.12.5.
Summary by Sourcery
Establish stack reliability tiers and enforce reproducible versions for all core and proven stack images and dependencies.
New Features:
Introduce core, proven, and best-effort stack tiers with documented reliability expectations.
Expose proven stack metadata in the Control Plane API and display badges plus a Proven-only list filter.
Add a pinned and reproducible code-server Python environment using a compiled dependency lock file.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent Control Plane service queries from failing during the interval before the tier database migration completes.
Make schema migration failures stop synchronization instead of being silently ignored.
Enhancements:
Pin every image used by core and proven stacks to an exact release, including custom image bases, support services, and Python dependencies.
Phase 1 of #712. Every stack is now core, proven or best-effort.
`tier: proven` in services.yaml marks the stacks courses run on:
code-server, Kestra, Marimo and Spark. The promise is that they work
on every release across a teardown and restore, and that their issues
are handled first. The automated release gate is phase 2; until then
the check is manual, and every page that states the promise says so.
What is enforced now:
- Core and proven images name one exact release, never a line.
Pinned to the release each floating tag resolved to today (digest
compared on the registry), so a fresh server gets what it would
have pulled anyway:
- code-server base: latest -> 4.143.1
- kestra: v2.0 -> v2.0.8
- grafana: 11.6 -> 11.6.16
- loki: 3 -> 3.7.9
- promtail: 3 -> 3.6.8
- cadvisor: 0.56 -> 0.56.2
- forgejo-postgres: 17-alpine -> 17.11-alpine
- infisical-postgres and kestra-postgres: 18-alpine -> 18.6-alpine
- infisical-redis: 7-alpine -> 7.4.12-alpine, the newest 7.4 patch.
No patch tag shares 7-alpine's current digest, so this one is not
byte-identical to what a fresh server pulled before.
- A stack built from its own Dockerfile also needs an exact FROM and
exact Python packages. code-server installed twelve packages
unpinned; it now installs a full lock (requirements.txt, compiled
from requirements.in). The image builds for linux/amd64 and runs
Python 3.13.5, dbt-core 1.12.5 and duckdb 2.0.0.
- The local tags follow: nexus-code-server:4.143.1 and
nexus-marimo:0.23.4-sql-spark, both off the latest allow-lists.
New convention tests: valid tier values, no tier on a core service,
the proven set is a deliberate list like the core five, exact images,
exact Dockerfile bases and Python packages (a -r file is traced through
its COPY). Six mutations each fail a test.
Control Plane: a `tier` column ('core' / 'proven' / 'best-effort'),
written by sync-deployed-state.sh from a fixed set of strings rather
than the raw yaml value. setup-control-plane migrates it before its
Pages deploy. The API returns it, the stack list, category and search
pages show a PROVEN badge, and the Stacks page has a "Proven only"
filter (also ?filter=proven). Checked against a mock API in a browser:
4 rows filtered, 107 after toggling off.
Docs: a "What each tier promises" section in docs/concepts/stacks.md,
a tier table and footnote in docs/stacks/README.md, a note on each
proven stack's page, the user guide, and pinned versions in the
code-server, kestra, marimo and overview pages. CLAUDE.md,
.coderabbit.yaml and copilot-instructions get the tier rules and lose
code-server and marimo from the latest allow-list.
From the local CodeRabbit round on 822dd0a.
Fixed: sync-deployed-state.sh ran each ALTER TABLE with errors
discarded, so a failed migration let the sync carry on and fail later
in the INSERT/UPDATE batches that name the column. Only a duplicate
column now counts as success; anything else stops with wrangler's
output, as migrate_column in setup-control-plane.yaml already does.
Exercised against a stub wrangler: duplicate column passes, an error
and a silent non-zero exit both stop.
Fixed: the exactness check accepted a tag like 1.2.3-latest because
it starts like a release. It now rejects anything _is_floating
rejects first, and the helper test covers that shape.
Fixed: Proven only also filtered the grid, but a category card opens
the unfiltered category page. The filter now switches to the list
view, and switching back to the grid clears it. Checked against a
mock API: 4 rows with the filter on, 18 category cards after Grid.
…pipefail
11976e1 matched wrangler's error with `printf | grep -qiE`, which
test_sigpipe_under_pipefail rejects: grep -q exits at the first match
and the writer can fail the pipe on SIGPIPE, turning an expected
duplicate column into a failed sync. A `case` on the lowercased output
has no early reader. Re-run against the stub wrangler: duplicate
column rc=0, an error and a silent non-zero exit rc=1.
The change adds core, proven, and best-effort stack tiers; pins images and code-server Python dependencies; validates tier membership and version pins; and passes tier data through D1 and the services API to Control Plane badges and filters.
Four services are marked as proven. Several stack images now use specific version tags. The code-server build installs dependencies from a pinned requirements file. Documentation describes the tiers and their release expectations.
The convention checks validate tier membership and exact pins for core and proven stack images, Dockerfile base images, and Python packages. The instructions and documentation describe these rules.
Persist and return tier data control-plane/schema.sql, .github/scripts/sync-deployed-state.sh, .github/workflows/setup-control-plane.yaml, control-plane/functions/api/services.js
The schema and migrations add a tier column. The sync script derives and writes tier values. The services API returns the tier, defaulting to best-effort when the database value is falsy.
Show and filter proven stacks control-plane/src/components/StackTable.astro, control-plane/src/pages/category.astro, control-plane/src/pages/search.astro, control-plane/src/pages/stacks.astro, control-plane/src/styles/global.css, docs/user-guides/stacks.md
The Control Plane displays a proven badge and adds a proven-only list filter. The filter supports URL initialization and button toggling; switching to grid clears it.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 85a79
Until the setup workflow adds the tier column to an existing database, the Stacks pages can return HTTP 500 from the services API. Run the migration before the new Pages build goes live, or make the query tolerate the old schema. The convention test should also catch pip3 install so that unpinned packages in proven stacks are rejected.

This PR establishes core/proven/best-effort stack tiers, pins every core and proven runtime dependency to reproducible releases, and carries the tier metadata through validation, deployment synchronization, the Control Plane API/UI, and documentation; the automated proven-stack release gate remains a documented manual process.

…ery pip spelling
From CodeRabbit's review of #940.
Fixed: GET /api/services selected the new tier column outright. Setup
migrates D1 before its own Pages deploy, but spin-up.yml deploys Pages
before sync-deployed-state.sh migrates, so on an existing database the
Stacks pages answered 500 for that window. The query now lives in
_utils/services-query.js and retries without tier on exactly 'no such
column: tier'; every row then reads as best-effort, which is what a
missing badge says anyway. Any other error still fails. Three node
tests; removing the fallback fails one.
Fixed: the Python pin check recognised only a token spelled 'pip', so
'RUN pip3 install requests' passed unpinned. It now matches pip, pipN,
pipN.M and a path to any of them, plus python -m pip and uv pip, with
a test per spelling; reverting fails the three new spellings.
