Add browse_pipelines action=artifact_file to read a specific CI artifact without downloading or unpacking the archive. Text results use bounded UTF-8 byte windows with explicit continuation and completion metadata, preserving ANSI color escapes as plain text. Binary content returns a structured refusal and an artifact-view link.
The action preserves project policy, token scopes and instance routing. Downloads validate ranges and redirects, cancel unused streams, bound prefix scanning and retained bytes, and keep credentials and signed query strings out of cross-origin requests and diagnostics. Documentation and the installed CI skill describe the new action and its limits.
Testing
Focused unit, HTTP and MCP contract tests, TypeScript, ESLint and formatting pass on macOS. Live integration tests pass against GitLab 19.5 with artifacts uploaded by a real CI runner.
Add single-file CI artifact reads with bounded streaming, UTF-8 continuation and safe redirects. Preserve instance credentials, project policy and request cancellation, and document the action in the CI skill.
Closes#675
Use pull-driven streaming for safe cancellation on Node 24. Release refused downloads before fetching job metadata and preserve literal percent sequences in artifact paths.
Refs #675
The pull request adds artifact_file to browse_pipelines. It validates artifact paths and reads bounded UTF-8 windows with continuation metadata. The implementation handles redirects, transfer errors, and cancellation. Tests, pipeline artifact fixtures, documentation, and CI skill guidance cover the new action.

Summary
Request and path contract packages/gitlab-mcp/src/entities/pipelines/artifact-path.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/src/entities/pipelines/schema-readonly.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/src/utils/error-handler.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/tests/unit/entities/pipelines/artifact.test.ts
Adds the action’s path validation, byte limits, request schema, and structured refusal type. Tests cover invalid inputs and path encoding.
Wires artifact_file into browse_pipelines. Adds artifact fixtures and MCP and GitLab integration tests. Updates the tool documentation and CI skill guidance.
The new artifact-file action works on its main path, but the PR currently fails a required unit test, so CI is red until the encoder is allowlisted in the path test. Text reports containing ANSI color codes will also be refused as binary, which limits usefulness for CI logs and linter reports. Fix the test failure before merging; the ANSI handling is a smaller follow-up.

Explanation
The title "feat(pipelines): read individual artifact files" matches the main change. The PR adds a browse_pipelines action, artifact_file, that reads one job artifact file as bounded UTF-8 text. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional commit format. The title does not mention the bounded windows, redirect handling, or documentation, but it is not required to cover every detail.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR implements the active direct requirements in #675. BrowsePipelinesSchema adds artifact_file with project, job, path, offset, and limit validation. readArtifactFile uses the authenticated GitLab REST route, bounded redirects, range handling, cancellation, and structured refusals. readArtifactWindow enforces the 64 KiB default, 1 MiB window, 20 MiB offset, bounded UTF-8 continuation, and completion metadata. Tests cover scope and token checks, redirects, concurrent instances, cancellation, ranges, UTF-8, binary data, failures, and a real CI artifact fixture. Documentation, generated references, and both CI skill files are updated. No 19.5 gate or unrelated archive API is added.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within #675. The fetch and request-context changes support authenticated artifact streaming, cancellation, timeout handling, and query redaction. The schema, error type, tests, documentation, fixture setup, and skill updates directly support the new browse_pipelines action. No arbitrary URL download, archive management, report extraction, or newer archive-tree API is introduced.

Preserve ANSI text and keep lookahead controls out of window classification, with regression tests for both cases. Recognize the artifact encoder in REST path validation, scan Unicode filenames with codePointAt, and bound the HTTP fixture routes. Keep CI shell escapes intact through String.raw and cover all artifact reader branches.
